Love that helm chair and pilothouse layout. That is a nice profile of Chicory. That is one beautiful boat. Thanks for all of your insight and knowledge.

One of the best walkthroughs of this subject I've seen. Well done and thank you for taking the time.

How cool! Does the chart plotter/navigation software include "comfort" indicators? Like plotting the course in green, yellow and red? If not, that would be a great feature, I guess. Would it be possible/reasonable to modify a course for greater comfort? Or would the distance increase too much? (zero boating experience here, please excuse if these are naive questions)

PredictWind has an option where you can input the preferred sea state you believe will be comfortable and it will create a route; however, it is designed for sailors and does not meet my needs.

Great info! Could you share how you calculated your pitch? I'm not understanding exactly how that piece is determined with your boat size.

Thanks for the question. I made a video to answer your question. It will be posted tomorrow morning. I hope this helps.

I notice that Chicory has a mast and foresail - something not often seen on a 46. Can you comment on how this came about and elaborate on the "sailing" performance? (I fabricated an asymmetrical spinnaker for my N35, as my "get home" engine, but fortunately never had to use it. I'm curious as to how the sail would work with a heavy displacement boat with a relatively shallow keel.)

The original purchaser of Chicory from PAE specified the sailing rig as a get-home alternative to a wing engine. You are correct, with a small sail area and a weight of 60,000 pounds, Chicory is not a great performer under sail. But if we were to lose the main engine for some reason, I am sure we would be glad that we had the sails. I think there were originally about six 46's built with a mainsail.
