    I realize that I am a youtuber and DCI fan partially responsible to inspiring other DCI fans for transcribe excerpts of shows by ear and post them on youtube for everyone to see. This is cool, but I need to make sure everyone understands something very important:
    These professional world class arrangers and designers are VERY passionate about what they do, and they spend countless hours carefully articulating their message through every note of their work. When a fan takes that hard work and commercializes it by attempting to interpret it on paper and then exposing it on a site such as youtube, this COULD be flattering to the arranger and the organization, but it could also be OFFENSIVE. Please consider this.
    Years ago when I posted my first transcription, I did not understand this. Not long after I started posting more, I made the connection that if someone were to take this music and sell or perform it, that would be illegal (which is why I have NEVER sent a score out to a youtube subscribers or fans). But now having spent time on the other side of the business as a composer and arranger for various ensembles and activities, I have a deeper understanding of what it means to take someone's intellectual property and post it on the internet.
    I have attempted to contact Carolina Crown about this video, and if they ask me to take this video or any other of my videos down, I will not hesitate to do so. The same goes for any of the videos transcribing from any of the other organizations.
    Just be considerate of this whenever you decide to post a transcription like this up on youtube!! This will most likely be the last transcription I do.
    Now the OTHER thing! This is only a brass transcription, and it is not 100% accurate. Part of it is human error, but most of it is intentional -- if you know me, you know I ensure that NONE of my transcriptions are accurate and I do NOT check my work with the authentic parts because at that point, I'm treading plagiarism. DCI fans and advocates... also consider this...
    But aside from all that, please enjoy the video! Because someone's always curious: It took me about 11 hours total to create this transcription. Hope you enjoy the stereo effect :)

      They're pretty amazing aren't they? I believe Crown has the single most effective brass educational staff in the history of our activity and has had it since as early as 2003. Thanks for watching!

    Man I keep coming back to this video over and over again. No other DCI show has gotten to me the way this one has. I could watch the actual show but I feel a transcription of high quality, such as this one, really is better to hear and actually see all the parts. Needless to say, awesome job!!!

    Wow this is just FANTASTIC! Seriously, i think this is how the arranger for Crown must feel when he finishes the score. I felt like i was actually listening to the real thing. I mean, the perfection, and closeness to the actual thing is just amazing. As a fellow composer and arranger for marching bands, i do feel that each note has a significant meaning to the show. As a composer, i feel flattered having someone else arrange one of my shows, That means that my music has made an impact, at least to one person. But like you said, sometimes all those long hours of writing music can be really hard, and just to have someone take your composition and make it theirs can be a little disrespectful. But hey, it's music, what can we do? For lots of us, music is everything. Keep up the great work you got there, man you have a huge future ahead of you.

      I can't tell you much I appreciate those words. Likewise, I feel flattered and honored when I've inspired someone to share the love of music with others through my writing in any way, shape, or form, but I have run into people who have been in the business MUCH longer than I do who don't appreciate something like this at all. Michael Klesch doesn't seem to be one of those people, and knowing a man of such class, it's not surprising. Thanks for watching!

    I am flute player and have been for five years. I just recently took interest in DCI and have fallen in love with it ever since. I've watched this video more times then I'd like to say after finding this video only this week. I have found new respect for brass, as a woodwind player. Just looking at it, I know how to read trumpet and baritone music now. This right here is a master piece! And all by ear! I commend you sir (or ma'am)!

    Great job on the transcription! This makes me appreciate how amazing they are even more. The fact that those mellos could go up to a high C is incredible! I can barely hit a G. To be fair, I've been playing for 2 months ._. But still

    • @FreakoftheArts73
      @FreakoftheArts73  10 років тому +1

      Yes - aren't they incredible? Their mellophone line, in particular, has been that ridiculous at least since "The Grass Is Always Greener" (2009). I'll bet you can learn how to play like that. I know personally that when you come across a band with great mellos and get to write for them, it's a real treat. I'm sure drum corps is the same way. Thanks for watching!

      I just got into DCI last year, when our marching band took a trip to see finals. We're doing it again this year. Immediately after seeing it, I was bent on switching from saxophone to mellophone for marching band to hopefully march in DCI some day. And this year, I'm doing it. It's...not the easiest thing switching from woodwind to brass while still trying to play both really well. But I'm working on it.

      Learn trumpet :) I know sometimes they'll throw really great trumpet players who aren't quite ready for upper-split lead parts on a trumpet to the mellophone line and they'll rock it. Also, practice! :)

    • @FreakoftheArts73

      I love that part, too. I was always amazed particularly at how easy they made a logistical nightmare such as having an entire section start on the & of 1 cleanly and then line it up with the same thing in another section on the other side of the field. That alone would give almost every high school band (and a number of corps) in the nation lots of trouble. Thanks for watching!

I've started with a couple of segments from the lot (86 and the Fugue), and it'd be fun to check notes while I polish those up and wait for a brass-only recording to be released. If so, shoot me an email at info@jcmtenor.com.

      Also Sprach Zarathustra, by Richard Strauss. It's most commonly recognized as the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey. In Crown's 2013 preshow, it is brilliantly fused with Phillip Glass's Einstein on the Beach (Knee 1) as a mash-up, which is where the G-F-Bb in the bass voices and the voice-overs come from.

      Subscribe to my newer channel MSGrantMusic and you'll not only see an Out of This World Score completed in about a month from now, but starting some time a week or so from now, you'll get to see videos of me writing the entire transcription behind-the-scenes and talking about the process on that channel.

    where can i get a music making program like this

    • @FreakoftheArts73
      @FreakoftheArts73  10 років тому +1

      This is Finale Music, which is quite expensive, but there are plenty of "offspring" versions of Finale and other notation systems (I.E. versions of Sibelius or Forte) that are either free or extremely affordable that you can check out. I'd also check out Noteflight online, which I believe is free. I believe there's an app either coming out or already out on IPhones, but I don't remember what it's called.

      Thanks! I used the music notation system known as Finale 2012 to write the music, Audacity (free download) to edit the audio and create the stereo effect, CamStudio (free download) to capture the video, and Windows Live MovieMaker (comes free with Windows) to produce the video. The only software that isn't free is Finale.

      Maybe, but I have to confess that it's not likely that I'll be doing any more transcriptions any time soon for various reasons. However, I think someone has already done this on youtube somewhere? Thanks for watching!

      Once the 2014 season begins, I will most likely be doing a quick tutorial on how I transcribe shows via my other channel MSGrantMusic (not very much on it, yet). I can explain in depth there if you subscribe to that channel. But yes, this entire transcription is by ear. To be fair, I have plenty of experience with this already - ua-cam.com/play/PL796AB7C511C37F0A.html Thanks for watching!

      Thanks for watching! I compose in Finale 2012, and then I do my screen capture with camstudio and my audio editing with audacity. I combine the contents and create the video using Windows Live Moviemaker.

    • @FreakoftheArts73
      @FreakoftheArts73  10 років тому

      I have to admit that I don't know the answer. It sounds familiar to me, too, but it could be because the chord structure they use underneath is referenced throughout the show, especially in the preshow and all the transitional material. It may just be Michael Klesch's original transitional writing heavily influenced by the source material used in the show, because he's quite good at doing that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for watching!

    • @FreakoftheArts73
      @FreakoftheArts73  10 років тому +1

      That would be a synthesizer cue from the front ensemble. I added some cues like those to help the transcription run more smoothly.
