Two things that have really helped me be smarter with my purchases is to treat sets like new clothes and only buy them if I LOVE the set, and that you don't need to buy a set just because it's on sale. Yes 50% off on that city police station set is nice.... but do I really want/need that? Cheers for the video you brought up great points!

I have gotten into the habit of buying something for myself at the end of each college semester as a reward for finishing and getting good grades. I was thinking of getting Darth Vader's Castle set at the end of this semester, but now I think I'm gonna get the Dagobah Jedi Training. Yoda's my favorite character and Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars movie, so it's kind of a no brainer. I might decide to get both though. I'm gonna spend too much money on Lego Star Wars this year. 🤣

Great tips, but I disagree on tossing instructions in the bin. Boxes do take a lot of space but the instructions don't take that much more space if you are storing sets individually.
Yeah, and what if a set gets broken somehow? How are you gonna rebuild it without the instructions?

@@DannyFragss Well, it's a lot more convenient to just keep the booklet. If you store your sets with the instructions, grabbing the instruction booklet that is right next to it while it's broken is easier than having to search up the set number on LEGO's website.

Not reading the back catalog is probably a general rule of thumb. It opens up such a large can of worms that leads to so much more spending on Lego, even if one is only looking for bargains.
Over the past few years I have suddenly become a hardcore fan with a touch of army builder. I have most of the playsets from the past 2 years, 13 going on 16 501st battle packs, the UCS A-wing, Gunship, the 2020 AT-AT, and Darth Vader's castle. AND I am about to get the UCS Star Destroyer. I'm rambling, but my point is that I quickly went from having one set from 2008 to being a hardcore fan/army builder. It's a dangerous path to take and there is likely no turning back, especially for me
I find the best method of collecting LSW sets is to allow one or two larger sets (barring UCS/MBS), two-three Starfighters, and 4 Battle Packs or equivalents on a yearly basis. Any other pickups must be on sale or budgeted for.
The 4 Battle Pack rule permits buying two each if two kinds are released or going all in on one with Clones, Stormtroopers, or more recently Dark Troopers.
Two or three Starfighters usually covers releases for a year but I did go a bit overboard myself last year and got four. As I've already picked up last year's X-Wing earlier this month, I'm allowed to pick up Mando's new N-1 Hot Rod. If there is a new version of Obi-Wan's Starfighter, I'm obligated to pick it up but that's due to my desire to own as many Jedi Starfighters and Interceptors as I can get my hands on for reasonable prices (I have not looked into all the Clone Wars variants and I'm not sure I want to...).
Big Sets are anything in excess of $140 CAD like a Millennium Falcon, AT-AT, Star Destroyer, Slave I, or Razor Crest. Keeping this to a maximum of two sets per year is essential and forgoing them entirely is always recommended, especially if a more massable set gets released that looks like a better value.

It also depends what you’re looking for. Many will buy sets only for the minifigs, and will sell the vehicle/building for really cheap, so that’s a good way to buy certain vehicles. I bought the 2015 imperial shuttle Tydirium (+ one rebel minifig) for AUD50.
Always look for used sets on online selling platforms, because you definitely can get them real cheap, if you want to play and display.
I wouldn't be able to live with the fact that someone else has put their fingerprints on my Lego, I would never buy used, not even mini-figs.
If I cant afford it, I don't deserve it.. yet

what i do is i just only ever buy lego star wars on sale. this also helps somewhat with impulse buys because you literally have to wait months for stuff to go on sale. the downside is once you hunt for star wars sales you notice the stuff on sale for other themes

I‘m in the hardcore Lego Star Wars fan. I grew up with clone wars and i own 51 kg of lego about 75% of it is Star Wars. I just love Clone Wars and the entire Star Wars universe.
Love the ideas. I’m so lucky to be (1) old enough to have bought all the Star Wars stuff as it came out and (2) OCD enough to have kept all the boxes and instructions (or never opened hundreds of them).
I’m thinking about going back and filling in some missing Indiana Jones and SpongeBob sets and that’s expensive enough. I can’t imagine trying to get into Star Wars now.

I just got back into Lego recently. Haven't really bought or built much since 2016 ish. First thing I did was pull out my old sets to rebuild including my childhood 1999 Lego X Wing. The first star wars Lego set. So glad I kept it
My first Lego Star Wars set was Darth Vader’s Tie Advanced from 2009, which seems kinda crazy to think how much time has passed.

My first LEGO Star Wars set was the Ultimate Space Battle from 2005. After that, I collected some of the smaller sets, but I always tended towards the bigger sets, such as the 2006 Imperial Star Destroyer, the 2007 MTT, the 2008 Republic Gunship and AT-TE, the 2008 Death Star, the 2010 Clone Turbo Tank, the 2011 Millennium Falcon, and the 2012 Malevolence. After that, I stopped collecting big sets, and now I rarely get LEGO sets unless I'm dying to have them.

I've started small with Star Wars when I got the Dagobah training, but I wanna stay original trilogy but also get into UCS and I think my first target might be the Landspeeder.
I have a lot of these sets and I think they are great. And I also have the rise of skywalker millennium falcon, it is my only one I have, which is kind of embarrassing because I've been collecting lego starcwars for year.
I would say that I’m more of a causal fan that buys lego Star Wars sets every so often. But then again, after six years of collecting, it’s almost grown to the size of Mt Kosciusko. (Bit of an exaggeration) but still a large enough collection to have been an enormous pain in the ass to move out of house with.
12:40 I remember when I was little I wanted a Lego Millennium Falcon (it was the 2004 one) for my birthday. My parents got me a non Lego one that was meant for actually figures. I still kept it though but I still wanted a Lego one. But I did end up getting this Millennium Falcon though and I’m glad I did. And in hindsight not getting the one in 2004 led me to getting this one instead.

I'm definitely a casual fan. I have the Slave 1 UCS but mostly prefer the minifig scale ships both for space they occupy and the play features. I'm also a fan of collecting minifigs. I'm 45 years old and only recently got into Lego Star Wars around the time the Mandalorian season 1 released. I buy a few sets each year but not a huge amount. I have a few retired sets I got for a good price but I generally avoid buying anything that's to expensive.

Hello there! I always wanted a LEGO Star Wars imperial shuttle, but the last one as made back in 2015 and is really expensive now. Then lego started to scale sets down, for example the x-wing and TIE fighter. THen came leakeen images of the upcoming sets and I was so happy to see a scaled down imperial shuttle and I bought it. There were complaints about LLuke having a wrong lightsaber color and the gap at the cockpit, but after buying it and modifiying it I'm really proud of it and my collection looks complete! BTW I make mods because they can meke sets look more accurate and more detailed, and you can make specific scenario's and display them.
I'd like to get into this because I know I could make use of some of the parts and some of the vehicles look really cool. So far, I think my biggest set is either the one with obi wan Kenobi and Darth maul and whoever Liam neesons character is, or an older white ship with three wings (the Y wing perhaps?) and a few stormtroopers and some red people.
Plan on buying my first 3 Star Wars sets for the first time in years tomorrow for Double VIP so I’m watching this incase I go through a rabbit hole

I totally agree with you at 6:42 it helps to think of it like this: in the future or even now a new set will release that's really cool and you like then get it don't wait or anything because if that set retires and no better sets come out after awhile you'll find that that set will become more expensive than the original price and then if you show people your sets or make yt vids about the sets you'll get bragging rights (lol jk) and you'll be happy knowing you got that set at the right time instead of being to late, so don't look back there's plenty of cool sets just waiting to be released
10:40 i nearly fell victim to this a few years ago, during my late teenage years i wasn't into lego so it was just in pieces in a few boxes in my old room.
come home one weekend to find my mum having a clear out and noticed said boxes in the hallway ready to be sent to the tip, just happened to look in out of nostalgia and noticed instructions for darth vader's tie fighter. the 10 year aniversary one from 2009.
a bit bored, i spent the day searching through the piles of what must have been thousands of pieces to reassemble it, complete with minifig and all... only then really dawned on me the value of the set.
it's now sitting proudly on my desk, i wonder how many sets have been lots to similar circumstances

Thw first lego set I got was the mandalorian battlepack and the cap and black widow from infinity war, which came wo minifigs and was a bummer
I get around 6 army builder sets a year 3 of the ones that look clean and fit on my shelf nicely but i really love to buy rare minifigures, I a full colored baseplate of just rare minifigures like captain rec my chrome stormtrooper admiral Yularen and rare clasic minifigures that range from 40$-600$ USD.

what I have done is instead of buying old sets is buying the parts rebuilding the sets and ordering the figures for a cheaper price
I am a Prequel- and UCS-collector. Sadly, the prequel-sets don't have the same quality as the OT-sets, not are there as many different sets from the prequels per wave for some reason. I dream of the day when a Jedi-Temple or a nubian royal spaceahip is on the shelves ready to be bought

I have the Episode 9 Falcon just because I liked the revamped proportions and I found it for 90€ instead of 150. It's still sealed, because I expected a new one to come out in 2021/22 and then I would've bought that and sold the Episode 9 one. But the way Lego SW prices are developing, the next OT Falcon will probably cost 200€ and since I already have all the OT minifigs, I'm thinking about opening 75257 and selling the minifigs (once I have more space in my room)

lol i had jabbas palace as a kid and never got the rancor pit. somehow late last year i managed to get the rancor pit very cheap because book of boba fett hadnt even started yet. Those prices have gone crazy.

But I do have to say that the falcon with Vader I do have I got it for my birthday and It is the set that I still have standing from that time period and I think it is amazing
I got a 501st battlepack for my birthday almost a year ago, now i spended around 1500e on legos (prequels/CW + mando sets), mostly from the used marked, but i almost have all the clones minifigis i want :D (missing wolfpacks p1 and rex p2, and by aiming for that i ended wiht lots of jedi, astromecs, and big droid army). Getting into the 2nd hand market is really expansive because you get acces to 20years of expansive sets that arent avalible. I did the math on my case, and with getting really good deals from the usual market price, i ended spending 20e less than i would have spend if i buyed the lego new when they came out. So the best time to ever buy lego star wars, is when they are avalible and in promotion. Like 501st battlepack at 19euro instead of 30 is golden, anakin starfighter for 19, separatist tank for 28e, Bad batch shuttle for 60e ect ect. So buy when avalible in promo, and stick to the era you really want because buying all of the starwars era will be too expansive. And if you go for 2nd hand market, it's good enough used, aim for the rpp !

I feel like sometimes I'm the odd person out when it comes to Star Wars cause I don't care very much about the minifigs and a lot of times I get the sets for the builds. Like when I got Poe's X-wing of course I like having Poe and BB8 in their respective cockpits, but the other 2 minifigs I could care less about and the thing I love most about it is how the black and orange colors look so great on display. I guess my thing when looking at Star Wars set (and any set honestly) is can I afford it and will it look good on display. That's all I care about.

I honestly just buy sets i really do love. Ive always loved star wars ships and thats really the only sets ive bought from star wars including the ucs falcon, lukes XWing, tie fighters, first order star destroyer and BD 1 because it was a perfect size droid. Im very selective. Once you really enjoy building a set you realize you dont have to buy everything

I've always admired Lego from afar, I wasn't able to afford it as a kid since I always favored Marvel Legends/classic Syar Wars action figures, but last year I slowly got more into lego through KO figures, then seconf hand eBay figures - all until I finally bought my first set - the massive Endgame Avengers Compound playset with all those awesome minifigures! I tried to keep away from the Star Wars community, but it pulled me in like a tractor beam and here I am 10 months later stressing over May 4th promos from dozens of customizers and Lego themself LMAO
I used to have like 10 legos starwars sets as a kid and one of them was the slave 1 from (2006) but I lost them when I moved and I was a teenager so I didn’t care but now I’m a AFOL and I regret not finding them

YES, the AAT is actually a great set, so severely underrated by all the bashing (mainly by Ryan tbh). Just cuz Ahsoka was released in the Duel on Mandalore (much worse set imho) doesn't mean the AAT doesn't have a great minifig selection. Sure the Fighter Tank will ecliplse that with a whopping 3 troopers, a Jedi and 2 droids but still. And the AAT build itself is not that bad at all, the cannon is easy to fix but I've actually kept it. The side cannons you just flip over and it's accurate.

I like UCS sets but it’s not really the classic LEGO, so that line really does nothing for me.The two sets mentioned though, MF and AT-AT, are minifig scale so they are ones that definitely make sense to get. You can probably add the UCS Razor Crest to that as well.
Also, I think because there are so many “investors” these days, the newer sets down the road won’t be as expensive in retirement like a Cloud City, Jabba’s Palace, etc. So waiting out sets, even UCS sets, until you can truly afford them is the way to go. I just don’t see there being massive spikes in value like in the past.

Last year I think I spent like $1,200 on Lego. But for 2022 I might cut that to $600. The only ones that really interest me this year are Sanctum Sanctorum, obi wan starfighter, and trash compactor. So that a little over $300.
I really try to wait for a bargain, but I hate when sets get retired before I find them on sale. I will never buy sets full price at a local store (Walmart or Target), because if I'm going to pay full price, than I might as well get VIP Points. (Currently at 63,701) I first got back into LEGO because of a coworker selling me his collection of 8 SW sets back in 2017. I actually keep a spreadsheet of my Star Wars sets. I have accumulated over 230 sets. MSRP of $15,000 USD, but I actually only spent $11,000. That's only SW. I try to buy 1 of every set I can find. Including the polybags. Very seldom do I buy multiples. I plan on building them all. When I find time & especially space.
I do want all the retired SW sets, but even used, they are outrageously priced. So, I don't see that happening.
I haven't kept track of all the other LEGO I have acquired.
All the childhood LEGO is still at my parents place. I haven't touched that since 1984.

Edit: also I should point out that I live in a small home and there’s not a lot of room to begin with and I just counted my recent sets, I have like 29 Star Wars sets and 7 ninjago sets and I am currently looking at a good majority of them taking a large portion of my room on the floor, just to get a sense of what I mean by “running out of room”

If you go hard into LEGO Star Wars it might also burn you out quickly. That happened to me. At a point I was buying the entire waves. Then I got sick of Star Wars which isn't hard since I loathe the Sequels, I don't like The Clone Wars and I feel mostly "meh" about the Prequels.
So now I mostly stick to the UCS sets and adult display sets (Helmets, Dioramas etc) and only ships I like the design but have no chance of ever becoming a UCS set.

The Prequels... didn't age well for me. I loved them as a teenager (well... Attack of the Clones sucked even then, bar for two things: John Williams "Across the Stars" theme and the final scene when we see Palpatine and Senator Organa on the balcony watching the clones enter into the Venators to the sound of the Imperial March). But watching them now... Yikes.
But the animated series have been mostly good. I loved Rebels, didn't care for Resistance. The Bad Batch was OK but I can't stand Omega (I can't stand child characters in general lol) and I found the concept behind Visions fascinating.
I loved Fallen Order, the KotOR games were amazing and I really enjoyed a ton of things now in "Legends".
It's not my fault LEGO sticks only to the films and here and there the TV series... 😅
The Clone Wars (I don't hate that... I just didn't like 85% of it and I can't stand Ahsoka lol Any episode with Tarkin I liked, and I like the arcs that delved into the Jedi and Sith lore and did NOT have anything related to clones or separatists lol)

The reason lots of sets are expensive as said in 6:40 is because the sets are long gone and value has been increased because those sets have stop getting manufactured by LEGO
