  • RSM is back to talk plants in the chicken run. This shows her full process for how to research and choose plants that will be safe, healthy, beneficial, and long-lasting (fingers crossed) in with your chickens. You can also see the progress she has made including the solution for protecting the new grapevines! Planting needs to get done soon in her neck of the woods so we will have one more video with the "Final Tour" coming soon! Check out RealSimpleMama.com in June 2020 for the full article about how to choose and care for plants in the chicken run. And of course, thanks for subscribing and supporting us!

This comment is 2 years late, but now I have chickens, and am trying to plan some plants to add for shade, fun, and yummies for them.
I live in so California, and bottle brush is plentiful in some areas here, but have always been told it is highly poisonous, and it is often removed, due to that. It usually has red "brush" blossoms. Concerned, I Googled it, and see that there is controversy if it is poisonous or not. Apparently, some varieties are, while others may not be. Since it has been 2 years since you gave it to your chickens, you hopefully planted some that were not deadly.
I would like to know how to tell the difference between deadly bottlebrush and safe ones.
Thank you for sharing your chicken knowledge with us! Your chicken coop and yard are great, and full of wonderful ideas!

Hi! That’s interesting and I had never heard of this! I adore bottle brushes but unfortunately the little dwarf that I planted didn’t survive our freezes. Before it died though, I can say that my chickens ignored it and didn’t have an interest in trying to eat it. ✌🏼❤️🐓

I am new to chicken keeping and have been doing a lot of research, I have found there is so much incorrect information! All these blogs just repeat and copy and paste off each other without a thought of correctness, especially in social media groups there are some groups that keep old posts archives they are full of misinformation. I just read that sweet potato vines are toxic to us and chickens they have LSD in them. 😅 I have looked through a few list that are University/ Government websites specific for poultry I even checked a few Aviary lists and all types of Bottlebrush shrubs (Callistemon ,Melaleuca, Viminalis) types are not in the toxic lists.
I have also read everywhere that onions are toxic in spite of tests done to measure the the effect that chickens eating onions has on the egg yolk in 2001, using basic reasoning and deduction that is saying it isn’t toxic or they would have mentioned eggs post mortem. 😂 sorry I am talking too much, do deeper research before you yank plants out, it is to bad your people have destroys a gorgeous plants.

Best chicken videos on the Internet, bar none. I recommend adding some of your other videos to the description, this way they can go from one video to another and on and on.

Yes! I was going to suggest making smaller playlists that are more targeted or specific. Love your videos :).

You are so inspiring. You answer questions I didn't know I had. I watched one of your videos way back, before I got my chickadees, or they were still under the lamp. You described how to administer liquid medication to a chickadee, alone. I watched, thinking, I probably won't need to.......Ha. I am giving antibiotics for Bumbblefoot. It isn't too difficult and I am grateful. It was sudden and I didn't need to go online, I already knew.Thank-you!!!

Oh that makes me so happy. I never mean to be morbid or to scare anyone, but I’m so grateful that you already had that knowledge so you could remain calm and focus on helping your bird. Thank you so much for letting me know. ❤️

Wow! Looks amazing. Will the chickens attack the plants once grown? I'll be remodeling my chicken coop soon. Please let know what are you using on the ground? Thank you.

Hey friend! Great ideas! Love your videos. Instead of the lantana, can you grow sweet alyssum? I’ve been doing some research recently, and I believe that the lantana is poisonous, while the sweet alyssum is not. Also, the sweet alyssum loves the heat and is drought tolerant once established, and has a wonderful scent to it. I have that and chamomile on my deck, along with some mint. Sedum may also be a nice variety, but I haven’t tested any around the girls yet.

Hey! I haven’t messed with alyssum and all my little lantana died in our one lousy freeze 😵‍💫 but I’m intrigued! You’ll have to let me know what you think. ✌🏻❤️🐓

real simple mama , we use cement mixing totes available at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Place red brick or Bricks that will work water In the tote leaving about a half an inch between each one and fill the tote with water about an inch below the bricks. Your girlsit

real simple mama sorry stupid auto correct; let me try that again. We use cement mixing totes, fill them with bricks about a half inch apart, fill the tote with water About an inch below the surface of the brick and keep them in the shade. We also have a Mister Line going through the center of the run. I hope this helps thank you again for all the great videos they’ve been very helpful

Hi! I found the red one at an antique/pawn shop. It’s called the Omaha model from Rugged Ranch. I’ve also used coops from Innovative Pet, and Aivituvin. I have a coop playlist here on my channel with more info too! ✌🏻❤️🐓

Hi, maybe you have some advice . Got chicks from a hatchery. They have mites. Put DE on them and in the brooder. It’s not helping. One is really loosing her feathers. Someone said use 7:dust.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 роки тому +1

Can you let them dust bathe in some sand? That’s their natural way of getting rid of them. Otherwise I’d use poultry dust, the more I learn about DE the more suspicious I become. Poultry dust is not so much a great preventative but it’s great for when you have a confirmed mite problem. Do a bit more reading to check me on my facts (and give them some vitamins and electrolytes) but that’s what comes to mind. ❤️🤞🏼❤️
