I watched other videos and they made no reference to this. I spent half a day pulling my starter (upper bolt was a bear to get out) and having it tested (good). I also swapped relays with the rear window defogger, since they were the same., but problem persisted. I found this video and decided to act on it. I paid $66 for the switch and the replacement was fairly easy. It also looks much more robust than the original, with the metal housing. So far, there's been no more problems. 🤞🤞 Thanks for posting this.
Thanks LifeTac! I was about to have my 2013 Hyundai Elantra towed to a shop when I came across your video. I thought it was the starter that was bad. You walked me through the process, and it came out great! There was serious rust on the center bolt that comes up from the center of the trans. It took some delicate prying to get it off. Otherwise, it was an easy replacement. The part was 65$ at a local parts store. Thanks again from this DIYer!
I'm surprised there isn't more out there on this issue. Very common, very annoying and often misdiagnosed. I bet thousands of batteries have been overcharged or replaced due to this. Thanks for the video!
Thank you my friend. Your video has answered the question to whether or not I could fix my wife's car. It also saved us almost $200. Again, thanks for stepping up and helping out your fellow Americans who may be having the same issue.
I have a elderly neighbor with a 2010 Santa Fe with this problem. Dealership charged $196.26 on 8/29/20 for the updated replacement. If anyone needs to go to dealership "it happens", this updated price gives you an idea of dealer or garage replacing. Great video!
You just saved me $200 to have someone else do it. Recently started having the car struggle to take off from a stop, and the dash wasn't showing the gear like it normally should. Didn't think it'd be this easy to swap the part. Thank you for the video.
Got the part off Amazon for $23. Replaced it in a 2005 Elantra and didn't fix only being able to start in neutral.. Turns out the cable (attached to the nut mentioned to not move in the video) needed to be adjusted further back to recognize it was in park. I just shoved a small screwdriver in the bolt-less hole to match up while in neutral, then moved the cable back and tightened the nut (12mm.) The old switch may have still been good, Regardless, I learned how to adjust the play in the shift column which is STILL useful!!! (Likely fucked up the old NSswitch while wrestling it out of it's rusty purgatory, so just keeping the new one in) All in all worth the knowledge ! (Much easier on the '05. Switch is to the left of the battery and doesn't require removing the air box... Or anything for that matter.)
Thanks for this video! My car had only 39,000 miles on it when I started having every issue that other viewers were commenting about on this problem. My car's engine light would come on and go off after a normal drive on a highway and I would have poor engine performance power at times...stuck shifter,etc...very annoying situation! But after diagnosing and buying this new switch part...no more drama!
A HUGE Shout out for your detailed video. I'm running some basic test for my 2016 Elantra and after reviewing your video, I have more items to diagnose. GREAT WORK!! Thanks a MILLION!!
Thank you for doing this video. This seems to be a problem for a lot of Hyundai owners. I almost sold my car for hardly anything because I thought it was a major issue.
I just started having this issue intermittently on my 2012 Elantra.. At first I thought it was the battery but my charger said it was fully charged. Then thought maybe the ignition switch was going bad luckily I randomly messed with the shifter and it started right up. I had no idea this was a problem with these cars. I feel sorry for you if you spent hundreds of dollars on a misdiagnosis from the mechanic. Thanks for the video will be changing mine over the weekend!
Thanks for the great video. Made it easy for me to replace the inhibitor switch on my 2014 Hyundai Elantra, and now problems of occasional stuck shifter and code P0705 have been solved.
I have a 2013 Kia Rio with the same problem thanks to your video I was able to change it with no problem, the part cost from the dealer $107. that's Canadian I want it original part, Chinese may not last. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Why did someone dislike free expert help with something that thousands of people have been duped by dealers to buy a new battery? Thanks bro. My granddaughter bought a battery. I wasn't satisfied on mine that it was the battery.
I replaced the inhibitor switch and it slightly fixed the problem, but hasnt fully fixed. The car sometimes shuts off when I come to a complete stop at a light. It will then take about 1 or 2 tried before it comes back on. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your post. It solved my starting issue. The video was concise and very clear. i went to the dealer with a screen shot of the part number. Great instructions!!
Great video with step by step detailed instructions. Just started DIY car repairs and this was very helpful for my 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited! Thank you!
Thanks man.. i have the same issue with my elantra 2014 , sometimes it wont start.. for how many attemps and when it start sometimes there a shift shock from park to drive.. theres no engine trouble on the cluster,, i bought a obd scanner. I checked it was transmission range. And i replaced with new inhibitor switch. Now so far so good its starts well. Thanks for the video it really helps a lot.
Thanks for this video--clear, to-the-point, and easy to follow. Just finished installing the inhibitor switch and it is working fine. Saved me $Much! Great help.
Thank you very much for the video. My veloster has been temperamental with starting issues and could start in neutral but not in park occasionally. Hopefully this does the trick.
Hello! Thank you very much for this video! Immensely appreciated! It helped me a great deal to have a video to go with the TSBs. I used this for my 2013 Hyundai Accent. It was having issues with code P0705 Transmission Range Sensor. The digital dash would sometimes not show the P, for Park, on start-up. And if it did not show, it would shift hard, and also not show R, N, or D when shifting, and sometimes trigger the check engine light. If I turned the car off and shifted to N, and then back to P, it would typically correct the issue and could drive as normal. Sometimes it would start up fine with no problem as well. I just used your video to help replace the switch, and so far so good on the first couple tries. Hopefully it corrected the problem 100%, but won't know for sure until a number of more tries. As others have mentioned, I put the car in N first after putting the parking brake on, and then replaced. It was also a bit easier to do if you put a screw driver in the alignment hole in the bottom right corner of the switch (on TSB) before untightening and tightening the bolts on the switch. Also compare prices with Kia and Hyundai for this part, as they both make this exact part with same number, and it lists both companies right on the switch. Thank you again!
@@EricLight Yes! For me, I haven't had the issue I described above since I did the repair. It was a lifesaver for me! Thank you again for posting this video!
Thank you LifeTac for this video on this issue. After a battery replacement(5 year old battery) and a starter replacement (Selenoid was clicking but no start) here you have a another solution to one of the starting issues. A $30 dollar part and a quick replacement should have this fixed up. Although there was a recall on my 2011 sonata #15-AT-001, i'm waiting to hear back if they will cover it as im at 165K
One HUGE thing missing from this video is to put the car emergency brake on, and then put the handle of a wrench behind the metal plate to keep the shaft from turning CCW as you loosen the nut. As soon as that shaft rotates, the car moves out of park and starts to roll down your driveway. Also, the metal plate often rusts to the shaft. (Everything rusts badly on Hyundai cars.) Hit this with penetrating oil 30 minutes before working on it. If you break that shaft, you just bought yourself a new transmission. The new switch WILL NOT come with the switch in 'park' position like the position the shaft will be in. (But it will be close.) Look inside the new switch and note the two flat plastic parts of the switch opening which align with the flat spots on the metal shaft. You will likely need to rotate the switch with your finger or a screwdriver to get the plastic tabs to line up with the position of the shaft. As others have said, this switch is position adjustable (meaning you can slightly adjust it back and forth....note the elongated mounting holes), and you might need to move it back or forth to allow the gearshift to work properly. Mine needed to move CW in order to get the 'D' to show on the dash after initial install with the bolt holes centered. Wiggling the stick slightly while the car is in drive should NOT make it stall. If it does, rotate the switch clockwise and retighten the two mounting bolts.
@@lilkimphan are you saying that if you slowly switch from park all the way down into second or first gear, all of the dashboard lights light up except for d? Are you sure the LED or bulb for that d is not burned out? I don't have access to this type of car anymore. But basically the d is in The middle of the full travel of the shifter cable, so slowly.... Slowly.... Shift from park all the way down to first gear and see if the d lights up at all even if just for a second then report back.
Thank you for your post, very valuable information. I had similar issues when the solenoid under the shifter inside the car was not getting the signal to allow the shifter to move. I adjusted the neutral safety switch, and it fixed the issues. However, I still have some issues where the car shits hard when the engine is cold. Are there further adjustments to fix these issues? Will a new switch fix the issue? It is 2008 Elantra with 165000 miles.
great video, I just replaced this neutral safety switch on my wifes 2017 santa fe, now its difficult for her to put the car in drive, but starting fine, I know what I did wrong, thankfully I took pics of before and after the replacement and I disconnected the linkage arm that connects to the bracket..so ill just had to adjust that and make sure its good to go
Thanks for the step by step bro. I gotta do that job myself right now. Thanks for the last part about lining it up it your finger. You probably saved me from messing up that part lol
My car is Hyundai ELANTRA 2014 , the problem is that the reverse light and the reverse camera is not working , but the reverse parking sensors is working well . Is the problem is from the Switch inhabitor ?.
Def gonna try this on our Santa Fe. This look like this could be the culprit. The fact that the backup camera sometimes show up while we are driving forward seems to point that way too.
Thank you was able to do it in my 2013 Kia Forte koup . Sometimes it didn’t want to start but I was able to start it in neutral.. same process maybe a bit easier and same exact same part thank you
This will fix your problem of one click no start, stiff pedal, locking shifter etc...It can also show symptoms like a wonky battery or starter so be aware. Buy online from a Hyundai dealer as they have been redesigned and are beefier looking now, about 50$. FYI..it showed up as a code B2AAA (generic "somethings wrong" code) on my pocket scanner, later showed a PO705 on my Innova 5310 scanner.
Hey Life Tac, First love this video!!! How did you diagnose the problem? My 2013 Elantra was just in the shop for brakes, oil change, and inspection..... Then it wouldn't start in the shop bay? Very odd to me? Was told it was the starter and it need replaced? Yiu turn the key and hear only a click. It sat there all weekend and started right up?? What can I do to check this? Vs the starter? Thanks in advance!!!
Very helpful video. For the three 10 mm bolts holding the air box in place, how long of a socket driver extension would I need for the bolt closest to the front end? It looks like it's pretty far down there.
Going to try this out. 2011 sonata limited. will have to push the push start button numerous times, even having to turn the steering wheel will doing it to make it start.
Hello My 2013 Elantra won't turn on ,it just turns over I check the fuses they look good. The fuel pump seems to work i can actually here the fuel pump turn on. Do you have any idea far as options i can look into on trying to get this car started Thank you
@@itsherschy9469 It did at first, but i might have another issue. It doesn't work if i just gently put it in park now, i have to basically be very rough in my gears to make sure they are all registering properly. though mine isn't on the road right now, so i can work on it
I need help, follow instructions on the Kia forum page which brought me here from your original post. Install new TRS on my Kia Forte 2015lx .. Did the bolt needed adjustment or arm? Car won't shift into Drive.. Got my code reader ready.. Think I miss adjusting something
What if the neutral safety switch was stuck. When trying to remove it the thing it sets ontop of the transmission pulled up with it and now it wont go in reverse?
Anyone who wants to order OEM and half dealer price look on rockauto. Just did mine ordered part no. NS623 Standard Intermotor Cost 23 plus shipping. Same exact part. Even had Hyundai Kia stamped on it. Fixed my starting issue and was really easy to install
Agreed. Got my $23 part from rock and put it in today. It was less than a one-beer job! My symptoms were different though - got stuck with shifter that would only move between D and N, and locked the key, but I think it's from the same problem - original inhibitor switch sucked. So far, so good.
Other symptoms from this problem include getting stuck with shifter only moving between D and N, no R, no P, and key being locked - will turn to off, but not to "lock" and can't remove it from ignition. Different symptoms, same part fail. Spread the word!
@@fb876queen Use the shift lock release by the shifter, have to pop the cap with a tiny screwdriver/paper clip.... then push the button down in that hole... pushing that button overrides everything to move the shift handle. Once the shift handle is in park, the key will come out.
Ever seen this problem on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l. Car will not start. Not getting any codes but in park was able to slightly roll the vehicle and heard an audible click as if the transmission cable is not adjusted properly. Any thoughts?
Before you changed out the switch and when you turned the key did you hear a click sound from the engine area? It is almost like the sound a bad starter would make.
The fix for the starting problems on the Elantras is either the neutral safety switch (this video) or cleaning your throttle body. In my case, cleaning the throttle body fixed the starting issues on my 2012 Elantra.
I have a question would that neutral safety switch be located in the same spot on my 2012 Kia forte or will it be in a different spot because I believe my neutral safety switch is starting to go out on my Kia forte because my car is not wanting to start after leaving it set and when I press on the break and press on my automatic transmission shifter it starts right back up so I believe mine is going bad that is why I'm asking
My 2013 Elantra GLS when starting for first time of day it turns over but won’t fire but shut key off and try again and fires normal. Won’t happen again during day unless I’m parked for an extended amount of time. Any ideas?
Does the car have to be in neutral to remove the neutral safety switch. I can get everything removed down to the switch but it doesn't seem to want to pop off the post. I have a 2011 hyundai sonata so a little different set up but process is the same.
Cool vlog here on this item . I just changed ,y valve cover gasket on my 2011 Elantra. On dr MLK birthday January 15 Saturday 2022. Happy new year 2022
Wow I wonder if this is what’s wrong with my car . First issue we had was the key getting stuck in the ignition and having to remove the plug to shut the whole car off to shut down the car . Then it won’t start some days and then some days it starts up and goes weeks working fine . Then back to not working again not starting makes a small click sound all lights come on battery is fine but won’t start . No codes showing up on the diagnosis and we have been financially in a crappy position because of this having to take Ubers to take my kids to school and husband to work being left broke with no money because of this issue. I hope this is the issue
Great video! I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra that gets the shifter stuck once in a while. No starting problem, the break lights come when pressing the break pedal. The two issues are sometimes stuck in Park and the other one is transition from Neutral up into Reverse (can move between N and D but won't go up) I'll appreciate any feedback or comment. Thanks a lot!
I removed the air filter box and checked the neutral safety switch is like the new part you replaced with in the video, which seems like this has been already replaced? The nut attached to the cable that goes to the shifter is tight.
I'm in the midst of replacing mine right now.. Old safety switch has 7 contacts (4 large, 3 small), whereas mine (and yours in the video) has 4 large and 4 small. This does not cause any problem at all?
Great videa . My elantra has no power nothing! Its like the battery is out of the car. Then after some time I return to the car get in mess with a few things and then all of a sudden I have power and it starts. The battery was checked no problems and the clock and radio don't need reset so I know Im not losing all power. Is this what everyone is talking about or having a bad switch mean that the car won't turn over but still has electric.

I have a 2013 Elantra and it started clicking. I replaced the battery and still the same problem.
Thanks for posting! Question, everything is unhooked from the switch and I can rotate it, BUT it will not come off the shaft! Suggestions?
Going to try this out. 2011 sonata limited. will have to push the push start button numerous times, even having to turn the steering wheel will doing it to make it start.
Hello
My 2013 Elantra won't turn on ,it just turns over I check the fuses they look good. The fuel pump seems to work i can actually here the fuel pump turn on. Do you have any idea far as options i can look into on trying to get this car started
Thank you
Thanks ! I have a 2003 Elantra Gls 2.0. I can't shift from park and the car won't start anymore but it cranks ?
Great Video!! thank you so much for the help, i hope it''s the same for my '09!
Did this fix it, my 09 is having the same issues and I need to fix it asap
Spread the word!
j r how did u get ur key out??
@@fb876queen Use the shift lock release by the shifter, have to pop the cap with a tiny screwdriver/paper clip.... then push the button down in that hole... pushing that button overrides everything to move the shift handle. Once the shift handle is in park, the key will come out.
Trying this tomorrow, ordered part through Auto Zone 🙏 it is correct and hubby can install :)
Ever seen this problem on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l. Car will not start. Not getting any codes but in park was able to slightly roll the vehicle and heard an audible click as if the transmission cable is not adjusted properly. Any thoughts?
You dont have to put the lever in neutral before starting this replacement process?
Thank you for showing how easy it is to do this I just had to do my cuz on his car and I normally don't work on any newer cars I'm a old car guy 😂
How can I find out where this is on a 2016 Genesis? AWD G80
Before you changed out the switch and when you turned the key did you hear a click sound from the engine area? It is almost like the sound a bad starter would make.
My friend has a 2014 that wont start. I am going to try putting it in neatral to see if starts. Then maybe replace switch.
is this the same part that would be faulty on the same car but with manual transmission?
Thank you!
Today the key wouldn't come out of the ignition and I'm wondering if a neutral safety switch would prevent that from happening again.
Thanks! From NSW Australia 😀
The fix for the starting problems on the Elantras is either the neutral safety switch (this video) or cleaning your throttle body. In my case, cleaning the throttle body fixed the starting issues on my 2012 Elantra.
Great input! Thanks!
Any ideas?
@tampametal What was the issue? I am facing the same issue currently with 2013 Elantra GLS.
Happy new year 2022
Does this apply to a 2020 Hyundai Elantra?
Excellent job on this video...thank you!
Hi can this switch also cause transmission shifting issues while driving??
Great video help out I have 2013 kia Optima it the same as the Hyundai clear up the code and was able to shift thanks
Did it have any issues not going when in drive or reverse after starting?
Wow I wonder if this is what’s wrong with my car . First issue we had was the key getting stuck in the ignition and having to remove the plug to shut the whole car off to shut down the car . Then it won’t start some days and then some days it starts up and goes weeks working fine . Then back to not working again not starting makes a small click sound all lights come on battery is fine but won’t start . No codes showing up on the diagnosis and we have been financially in a crappy position because of this having to take Ubers to take my kids to school and husband to work being left broke with no money because of this issue. I hope this is the issue
very good directions and explanation.😍🌟
Great video... well done !!! Need to take care of this problem on a friends 2014 Elantra !!! Oh sorry the escargot was already cooked !!! LOL !!!
Great video but one question, did you get a single click sound when trying to start?
My car did that & after several attempts it finally started.
That sounds like a starter issue. Almost everytime I've heard a single audible click it's always the starter
@@LifeTac the thing is it doesn't happen all the time. Yesterday and this morning for example, it had no problem starting at all.
Great video. Quick question will this solve a P0705 code? Fault in the transition range sensor swicth?
Did you end up figuring it out? I’m having the same code on my Elantra coupe and not sure how to fix it but don’t want to take it to a dealer
Great video! I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra that gets the shifter stuck once in a while. No starting problem, the break lights come when pressing the break pedal.
The two issues are sometimes stuck in Park and the other one is transition from Neutral up into Reverse (can move between N and D but won't go up)
I'll appreciate any feedback or comment. Thanks a lot!
I removed the air filter box and checked the neutral safety switch is like the new part you replaced with in the video, which seems like this has been already replaced?
The nut attached to the cable that goes to the shifter is tight.
Thanks, great video. Saved me a bunch of money
My Elantra is 2016 Do o9u think its the same problem
Are this switch Causes noise in gearbox?
Thank you for your video, i just did the same on my kia Sportage 😉
Is this the same for a manual?
Thank you so much for the very thorough and useful video.
Do I need to register the new inhibitor switch to the ecm? or just like plug and play only
@@journeynarido5658 plug and play
Hi! How to know that this is the issue? Daignostics?
What if my car runs ruff at idle when I just replaced neutral safety switch .
Could be a lot of things. First I would check with obd scanner to see if there are any codes then go from there
@@LifeTac thanks it’s running better now I guess da new parts had to sink in . More power now m starts up good
Super helpful. Thank you!
My 2013 elantra Will not go into manual mode only P R N D but not manual 123456 Also if i Turn on the car and rapidly switch to D it Will go into manual mode can someone help please @LifeTac
Will the sensor be in the same area for a Hyundai Accent?
Not exactly sure it's possible though. It's very easy to check of you just remove the intake box
hi i have a 2008 santa fe that dont start or do any sound when i start it , ive looked online some people said it might be the neutral switch is it common for hyndai this problem
I have a 2013 Elantra and it started clicking. I replaced the battery and still the same problem. Day later no click and my battery is dead because my parking lights stay on without my key even in the ignition. No one seems to carry the inhibitor part either or have the starter in stock. We need to call Hyundai and tell them we are all having the same issue.
Thanks for sharing 🇧🇧 👉🏾 🇨🇦 👍🏽
Great video bud! Can you tell me how long it actually took you to change out the inhibitor switch? Thanks
Dan Chilton 20 minutes
Thank u my friend for this helpful video ,
But I believe when compare the two parts near each other , there is difference in number of pins inside the plug !
Is that normal ??
Thanks bruh this helps alot
