In an epic solo 176km breakaway, Mont Ventoux witnessed Eros Poli's unexpected victory during the 1994 Tour de France, leaving for history one of the most emotional stages in the history of the French round.
From the top there would still be 42 kilometers of long descent to Carpentras, in one of the stages marked by the best cyclists of that edition.
The giant Eros Poli (194 cm, 84 kg) was brave enough to attempt the solo machada, reaching the skirts of the Ventoux with a 26-minute advantage over the peloton.
Even so, everyone gave the victory to the group. But this giant of the Mercatone, based on struggle, dedication and courage, managed to hold the pulse of the roosters, Pantani included, to proclaim himself winner of the stage against all forecasts finishing an epic story to remember.
