- The Altamont Corridor Express, or ACE for short is a commuter train service that operates between Stockton and San Jose, California - a distance of 84 miles. Trains travel on tracks owned by the Union Pacific Railroad making station stops in Lathrop, Tracy, Livermore, Pleasanton, Fremont, and Santa Clara. ACE began operations on October 19th, 1998 and was originally called the Altamont Commuter Express. Trains are made up of bombardier bilevel commuter coaches and cab cars pulled by F40PH-3C locomotives built by Motive Power Incorporated in Boise, Idaho. Let’s take one last look back at ACE service as it has been for the last several years as the F40s pull commuters back and forth between the San Joaquin Valley and Silicon Valley.
CoasterFan2105 is the home of all sorts of train and railroad related video content. Stop by every Friday at 9 AM Pacific time for an all new railroading adventure and be sure to check out all of my social media pages @coasterfan2105 for even more great railroad content. Thanks, and I'll see you down the line!
I absolutely love ACE. Those K5LAs really say it all, especially on the Cab Cars.
I've always liked the ACE horns. Except for 2 of the F40s, all the horns sound excellent.
My Favorite Units are 3303, 3304, and 3307.
Superbaddy4 Yeah, my favorite is 3304. I like it so much that I have a photo of that I took as my wallpaper 😂
@@CoasterFan2105 what dose ace stand for (I'm watching this cuz it might ho to my minecraft server.

13:17 the voice of the train at this moment is just beautiful💝
14:05 Union Pacific felt like saying hi, nice video
Yup haha! Thanks!
6:09 Jesus Christ, that train be playing electric guitar for a horn XD
I've always enjoyed the ACE. The corridor runs through some pretty incredible scenery! And those K5LA's, man do they sing a very sweet chord!
Those F40's sound amazing
They do indeed.
CoasterFan2105 Altamont Corridor Express is not replacing their F40PH-3Cs, they’re keeping them. Also Altamont Corridor Express should order Siemens Charger Cars and F59PHIs
You did a fantastic job
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice to see those double deckers train. Hope, someday these kind of trains in my country..
Taking this train for the first time tomorrow I’m excited
Excellent Video Mike!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Memories of falling asleep and drooling on myself while going over the pass in train 5
That K5LA at 6:14 is absolute god tier
Awesome catches. ACE F40ph is best ever locomotive. ~Andrea!
Thank you! I really like the ACE F40s, they remind me of the Coaster ones.
Great video!!!!!
Thank you!!
Nice, the horns are the iceing on the cake
You said it! Thanks!
Nice Video Mike!
Thanks, Rhett!
great video of these commuter express trains
This is an awesome journey of this commuter train!
Awesome you have cheered me up during my Uk lockdown
Lovely revving up at 12:30. More diesel music like this, please. And, boys, I do LIKE these Wonderful Amurican horns SO VERY MUCH.
Living in Stockton I see these beauty’s everyday. Great video. And great K5LA horns
You're lucky you get to see these regularly! Thanks!
13:47 the horn was perfect
BEST RAILWAY-TRAINS EVER!!! :-D
Your videos are irresistible
1:17 That F40PH looks new
Hard to believe it, but even the newest F40 in the fleet is about 14 years old. ACE keeps their trains very clean and well painted.
They're washed every two days
15:16 I miss ACEX 3309 during the accident this cab car had...
Isn't she back in service or did she get scrapped?
It was scrapped. It was damaged beyond repair after the accident.
@@superbaddy4 Damnit, I hate railroad idiots always ruining everything, including destroying equipment like the cab car
I had heard that the 3309 is still stored on the property and the plan is to convert it into a trailer coach depending on funding. That information was from a year or two ago though, so I'm not sure at this point.
I was actually secretly told that back on December 12st 2019 by a certain ACE Engineer (who happened to be a 2000s Coaster Railfan), but I decided not to disclose it until after anyone else did due to the risk of getting them fired.
7:15 has to be my favorite
Good
Will you ever talk about the BART train some day???
It's always a possibility, but no immediate plans.
@@CoasterFan2105 OK.
CoasterFan2105 if that’s the case, please do the recently completed smart train between Sonoma and Marin County north of San Francisco. While you did do a similar video in the past, please do a dedicated video to San Francisco’s cable cars and trolleys.
@Jack Klink That's cool.
Very noice video, love those F40’s ACE has
They are awesome, thanks for watching!
The front end of the ACE F40 reminds me of a coaster F40
I was able to catch one of the ace test trains!
Cool video
Thanks!
Altamont commuter express trains in your video is so good!especially the horns! ):
Awesome job Mike
Thanks, Kenny!
@@CoasterFan2105 your welcome mike keep up the awesome work
Nice 👍
ACE has great K5LAs, almost as good as the ones on the P32-8s.
They're really great!
Nice work, Mike!
Thanks, Spencer!
I saw you on a different video but idk what it was called XD
@@CoasterFan2105 it’s an extension to Merced and Modesto. Not Sacramento and Merced.
@@Kaizoku_Zoro There are actually two planned extensions. One is north toward Sacramento and the other is south toward Merced and eventually Modesto.
@@CoasterFan2105 oh I see
I have filmed at many of these places (St Mary St, Clark Dr, Agnew Rd, Shinn St)! I remember the shot at 14:00 from the spring in Fremont video and it is my favorite video you have ever filmed. I filmed at those places because of you!
Thats awesome! Thanks so much!
Your welcome!
I really enjoy these trains, although I'm not happy to see the F40s get replaced by the weird grim and boring chargers like what Metrolink did to replace their F59 fleet and like what Amtrak's doing with the P40 fleet, I'm happy to see the project extend to attract more riders and I hope that it'll stay that way in the future
I'm not sure what the ultimate plan is for the F40s, but it's always possible that they will be upgraded to Tier 4. And in the meantime, there will still be 2 of them in service fortunately. We'll have to see what happens.
@@jjxtwo1 I know that, I just put Metrolink in this honorable mentions list of replacing locomotives for display purposes
Personally, I think the chargers are nice locomotives. My local train is the Pacific Surfliner and I do miss the f59phi’s. However the charger grew on me. I like both of them.
@@CrazyDash9 Ok, I'll admit, Chargers aren't all that bad, I like modernisation sometimes, they look class tbh, but not as class as the P40s or F40s or even the F59s, I'm more if a classic kind of guy, I'm just taking a while to get used to them
Shane Walters oh yeah I get that. I love the f40’s, p40’s and f59ph’s
Very familiar since I have the TSG dvd of this haha
Hard to believe they made that nearly 15 years ago!
CoasterFan2105 yep, a lot has changed, in fact I think John gave it to me because my mom was in the same mothers group as his wife haha, i was a bit smaller then too
Great Video Mike, Thanks for sharing. I feel fortunate that I get to see and hear them daily as well. I use to fuel Fuel Cal Train's F40's and Amtrak's Genesis Locomotives at the Ole Diridon Yard and at CEMOF before they got their fuel tank farm operating.
Wow, that's really neat. When I was younger, I made a few trips to San Jose and would always spend at least one afternoon there watching the trains. Big changes coming to that place in the next few years. Thanks for the comment!
@@CoasterFan2105 Lots of changes is a understatement, I work for the City of San Jose..... I am naturally a railroad foamer being raised in the confinds of railroad tracks. To me it's the most and purest American thing till this day
Amazing Video:) I love the ACE Cabcars K5LA's there music to my ears!!!
8:51 nice horn ACE in Fremont, CA
It’s strange how Caltrain used to stop in Sacramento wayyyy back then
Good video!👍
Apparently from what I’ve been told the f40ph are being rebuilt
EXCELLENT video MIKE!!
Thank you, Gary!
I use to see those trains back in 2006
I live in Tracy California also can you do a video about Union Pacific trains pls
Great video! Really nice shots!
This video has a lot of beautiful shots of ACE commuter trains. I definitely want to ride on one of their trains and try out their cafe service, one day.
Thank you! There's a lot of neat scenery along the route, especially in the Spring.
Sorry to disappoint, but there is no cafe service on ACE
@@jeremykhn Yes, I have since looked through and can't find any info on it. I know that those two cars were originally intended for that and they may have even done it for a period, but apparently no longer the case.
Amazing work Mike! :) well done!
The ace sc 44 charger locomotives train models are my favorite train locomotives models because I like the designs colors and train models itself i always wanted to see ride and I maybe even drive i hope it happens in the future it would best wish I ever have
The F40s sounds like the coaster
I'd like to see the interior of that cafe car.
Its just another coach, but with a little kitchen. But the kitchen isn't used.
Would love for you to cover the SMART trains in Sonoma County as well as the history of the Northwestern Pacific Rail corridor. Keep up the good work!
Ace has a new livery and you should see it they look amazing
It’s nice to see vids about trains local to where I live, especially during times like these where service is limited, and it’s recommended to stay home. Also, it’s crazy to think that you’ve been within a mile of where I live, so if I had gone out, I might’ve seen you.
Ace has extended a new route from the first line to San Jose to Sacramento airport, and the second line is Merced to the airport of Natomas and Sacramento.
San Jose to Sacramento? Won’t that be in opposite direction?
it will first extend to Ceres And then Merced but phase 1 got delayed to 2026
Does anybody know what will happen to #3106? #3106 was the last F40PH ever built in 2006, so will it be donated to a museum or something?
I don't think there's a specific plan yet. They will be removing the engines from 4 of their F40s once the 4 Chargers are all in service but other than that, not sure.
@CoasterFan2105 OK, so will they be converted into NPCUs, or sold to an operator such as Metra? Also, 3102 already has 3110 leading in front of it.
3101 and 3106 were retired from service and will be eventually rebuilt completely and resold to another railroad.
interessante Video über die ACE
Danke
Great video. I have seen these Commuter Trains, along with Caltrain at my city. San Jose, California.
Thank you! You're lucky you get to see them all the time!
CoasterFan2105 yeah.
Good video
Thanks!
you’re welcome I’m a big fan, your great
You have the greatest videos
I love ace.
Nice video!
Thanks!
Great video as always! How are you holding up in this Pandemic?
13:58 Union Pacific auto train passing through Fremont Station as the ACE commuter train arrives
Can you railfan at Fort Worth Texas, and the Grapevine Vintage Railroad sometime?
Ты молодец !!!
the ACE stands for altamont corridor expresses.
3103 kinda sounds the 2105 on quill only 8:08
Nice!
I believe Metrolink got some Bombardier bi levels from ACE
Metrolink only leased them. They've long since been returned to ACE.
Short term lease that went from roughly 2004 to about 2009ish. They also had a few full Sounder train sets on lease (including locomotives).
Like Commuter Trains
YEAH ACE TRAIN WITH LOCO VERY NICE🧐
Have you ever filmed the Ventura County railroad ?
My favorite: 16:29
They look alot like the coaster trains we have here in San Diego. Too bad thought the f40/ f59ph are going to be retired soon though.
LOOK GOOD
Man I love that horn! Anyone know what specific K5LA it is?
The majority are Narrow Font K5LA's
hey mike do you have any plans to go back to massachusetts to see mbta and downeaster trains because mpi rebuilt a bunch of f40ph's for the mbta and I think it would be cool for you to check them out
I'd like to get back to MA eventually, but not sure when that will be. Probably next time I have a big trip to the Northeast.
@@CoasterFan2105 okay
Come soon in Modesto
These have the best k5la
When Are You Gonna Do Videos Of Go Transit, AMT And West Coast Express Which Are Canadian Commuter Trains?
I’m curious what the ACE chargers will look like. Also how many f40’s does ACE have
The ACE Chargers are already running. You can see them right now!
Would you ever consider doing one of these videos on Metra Commuter railway? We have a whole ton of F40s and Amtrak's old F59PHIs which have served the city very well.
I have a video on Metra, but I will probably be doing more at some point. Las year, I was hoping to get enough video clips to do something on the new F59PHIs they got from Amtrak, but I was only able to catch one of them in service.
@@CoasterFan2105 Yeah. And depending on how this order goes, we could be getting SD70MACs running trains pretty soon.
I Put Kenjis Horn To This Commuter Train
Do more ACE charger locomotives in the future for train talk
I will when they're in service!
They're already running, they just aren't able to run solo yet.
I caught an ACE charger in freakmont.
Enjoyed the ACE video although as I've mentioned before it would be nice if you could seek out a few more locations when the horn isn't blowing all the time. Now you have so many subscribers surely you could approach the PR department of some of these railroad operations and get permission to film from trackside away from crossings and maybe even do a cab ride series? You can but ask... some may say no, others may be welcoming and supportive.
Coaster's little brother.
Ridership statistics likely quite a bit off, what with the COVID-19 Pandemic travel restrictions that have most Amtrak LD trains running empty, primarily to preserve time slots on BNSF and UPRR. 🤨
Mike Armstrong, I like trains.
Do you like trains too? I filmed
trains in the distance.
Did you film trains?
Ace 3105 got its raised letter replaced?
I think it had a round tag K5LA when it was built in the early 2000s and more recently, it got a newer raised letter horn.
CoasterFan2105 yeah but I saw it with another older k5la idk if you have videos from before 2018 but idk just caught my interest
Is there any update on 3101/3106
BART/Caltrain soon?
ACE has a Cafe? I tried looking it up and saw nothing about it.
The cafe portion was never used, so they're just coaches. No food service
😭I’m
Only here cause I ain’t neva took this b4
Did you say bi level cafe cars? Can't seem to find any information on those, maybe I misheard. P. S love your videos!
@Justin B Neither can I. The only information I can find is that they were custom built in 2014
They wanted to have cafe service, but it never happened. Even with the custom cars
13:01 what street is this, I can’t remember
