All the riders want to be world champion. Duh. As noted, MV can be very fast on his day, but his fast days are very rare, and likely to be even more rare on the KTM. Fast in testing. Fast in practice. Mid-pack (or worse) in the race. This contract is his last hurrah IMO.
Mav is what i call a "fair weather rider" very similar to Lorenzo if everything is perfect from the bike to the track conditions they are unstoppable. Give them a comfy mattress and they will sleep perfectly but put a pea under the mattress and they wont sleep well🤷♂️
I think that's a little unfair on Lorenzo. Dry weather or wet weather, he was on it. Mixed weather and he was lost. He was also, mostly, decent off the line and could put himself in a position on lap 1 or 2 where he had a chance. And then there's Mav. Mav is exactly as you say. Needs everything, bike, weather, track temp, fingernail length, phase of the moon, perfect to be fast and he'll still probably fluff the start and make his life difficult. MV is just a mid pack rider that managed to blag some top tier opportunities.

Once again, in Mavericks world there can be nothing other than 'what he wants". To be an alien or world champion, a rider MUST adapt and adapt almost instantly. That being said, in todays electronic and aero dominated road racing world, somethings arent capable of being made to be at the sharp ond of the grid. But, even if Mav was on a Ducati, he still would not be a champion. He doesnt adapt well, whines about giving him what he wants and rides timidly to avoid potential crash's. That last one is where the differences in performance come from. To be able to push a bike to its limit, learn the warning signs of taking it too far, you must crash, and crash much more often than Mav does. ALthough I am not a fan of the person he is, Marc is the prime example of using this technique to master his machine.
