How about x^2 - 25 divided by x - 5?
The student 'divides down' (x^2/x) (-/-) (25/5)
That becomes x + 5
But that's wrong. Why?
The teacher says you have to factor the numerator first. (x+5)(x-5)/(x-5). And then divide to get x + 5
Student says: but I still got the correct answer x + 5
Why is the student wrong?
