How You Kill Your Own Guard Retention

  • Holding on to grips too long is one of the biggest mistakes in Guard Retention I see people make when playing guard at all levels. To control someone you need grips but at the same time when someone is passing you, you need to know when yo let go of the grips and focus on framing and protecting your elbow knee space. This skill set of finding the time to defend and then re entangle your opponent is a critical transition skill set that is often overlooked.

Raise your hand if you're not guilty of holding the grips too long.

Thanks Jon I've been wanting to learn how to kill my guard for a while now, I was having a lot of trouble not sweeping people and constantly Bolo'ing people, with this I'm sure I'll get my guard passed in no time.

Great content as usual, Jon. Awesome to hear you reiterate how important it is to not give up that elbow/knee space by keeping in a ball and not overextending to frame far.

I keep finding myself in that exact position. And failing my way out of my guard. I will definitely have to try using that outside leg.

You are an excellent teacher. You remind me of how Keenan explains positions. Goes into the reasons and concepts more then the moves.

This is absolutely my biggest issue right now, and honestly what caused me to plateau at blue and ultimately take 4 years off. I get so pre occupied with securing grips and setting up spider or DLR , what have you... trying to force the position when in reality I should be framing. Its a bit of a brain block but this video has opened my eyes a bit. I like the advice of always frame first, then worry about grips

Nice vid as usual. Do you recommend any types of stretching that will allow the hip area to be more mobile. I see many of guard retention relies the knees being able to touch ones chest. Thank you.

Always amazing details! Something I'm struggling with lately is when then shoot the knee through to the other side. Any advice for that? Aka if the passer is using their right knee to pressure through to their right side instead of the traditional knee cut to their left side

@@JonThomasBJJ Thanks for the reply! Let's say, my opponent is on their knees and I am pulling guard. (Typical academy start). My professor will shoot his knee through and I'm immediately trying to frame off his knee and at least re-center my hip to throw a lasso again.

Im not Thomas but i have a very good advice. Get a punch sandbag, put in the ground, put your chest in him, put your weight and make strenght in the bag, do it and move too. Thats helped me a lot.

Opa posso sim.

Hello John, good to see you. Can I ask you something? Right now I have immense difficulty with pinning people. I can't hold anyone down to save my life. What's more is that once I pass guard and got to side control, I have no idea what to do or rather I don't know how to threaten people from side control or get the submission.
How do you think I should solve this, Jon? I have been thinking a lot about this. But it is too broad a subject and I don't think there is any good DVD out there about pinning or side control either. Just a bunch of moves to do "this and that".

Bunny Azorth hey buddy I would recommend going about it by breaking each main control style down. I would start with a string base side control, a strong switch hip style control, and a strong knee on belly. I think those are the bases you need to control once you pass. I’ll try to put out some more content on that soon
