I'm from California, I know about Baja and I totally agree...DAKAR IS THE BEST! Starts on the European side in wintertime, through the sahara, and finishes in Dakar, Senegal in the African continent. Extreme conditions from day 1, nothing compares or comes close.
@ 4:40, nothing like a pissed off french rider LOL. Great video, some great riders and drivers there. Not being sarcastic either! Anyone that competes in rally raid has my respect
In the Dakar rally you have 3 main classes : bikes, quads, cars and trucks. There's no overall winner Bikes are now limited to 92mph so most people are using 450cc bikes. Quads are limited to 75mph but people are still using a kinda-wide range of engines Cars are limited to 92mph and divided into T1 (AWD racing vehicles), T1.2WD (big buggies), T2 (almost-stock homologated street vehicles) and T3 (mini-buggies) Trucks are limited to 75mph and divided into T4 (4-wheel drive) and T5 (6-wheel drive)
I love Le Mans, and ALMS, and MotoGP. However, I've never seen this kind of rally motorsport before. I see there are a variety of vehicle classes being used. Is this a multi-vehicle rally race? Someone explain. . .
@bulletmunger the bikes are like the coolest category! They're really on their own out there. They don't have spare wheels or anything with them, they can only rely on their own skills and own mechanical knowledge. That is the real deal!
There's a set of regulations. Modern fuel tanks are around 32L (like 8 gallons) and those bikes are kinda comfortable, something needed when you have to do 150-400 miles of racing every day for 2 weeks plus the link roads. Also, right now they're limited to 92mph so most use 450cc "lightweight" bikes (in 2002 the main bikes were around 950cc and did 140mph on sand)
@8geartodown over the history of the paris dakar there have been 25 competitors that have died and about the same or a bit more of spectators who have been run over etc... and died
Does anyone know why they use these kinds of bikes? they look nose heavy and the tires look like street tires??? If i was riding that desert, i'd rather have a WR450 or something a little more off road ready...
2 to 3 racers die every year in this competition.. they have to go over 70 mph so they dont get stuck in the sand or fall "stupidly". Today was the first day of the Rally Dakar 2012, and 1 competitor died already.
why dont they take some bike with smaller weight ? like xl250 ? or something .. i mean those bikes are really huge .. and prize for motorbike must be more then those for cars and truck ..
Yeah, all of the people posting how bad of riders these guys are for crashing. You have no idea what its like racing in this environment. Guaranteed, they'd all place higher than you. Not to mention they're not out there just cruising around. They're riding as fast as they can to win a race.
@titytit Sorry, but I am not disconnected from youtube, my brother had to have been, because he likes those topics about motorcycles, I'm interested only four-wheeled transport.
@toolshedjunky "Yea yea yea, their bikes are heavy and they have been riding all day... all day seems like a fair amount of time to figure out how to ride on soft sand!!!" You forget about FATIGUE! Do you know anything about Dakar? They ride for hours a day EVERY DAY with only ONE rest day in the whole rally, which is 2-3 weeks long.
Still one of the best Dakar vids on here.
Once we land on Mars...this is the first thing we should do there.
A11
very very nice video
can any one please tell me the name of the last rider wears yellow

Good job man!! You are right, Baja can not be compared to the Dakar.
NICE :)))))))))
This is and will be the hardest race forever. How much is it allowed to tune the bikes? Brighter front and rear wheels allowed?
Whoa, the spectators are coldblooded at 1:06. I would piss my pants and the leftmost one didn´t even move.
.....isto sim um verdadeiro espectáculo de rally.....fantástico......

watched while listening "Requiem 1 Giuseppe Verdi - Dies irae, Libera me"... perfect synesthesia.

try dakar 2010 music version 2 for stunning dakar imagery
filmed with what exactly an hairdryer or a soldering iron, 4 k it aint
Textbook montage, perfect. The music... pity. I'd rather hear the original sounds.
how many of them died
?

the crashes do look ridicolous but it's amazing that they even are able to drive 1 wheel drive MOTORCYCLES on the finest sand! :O
crazy people! I like them! :)
@8geartodown over the history of the paris dakar there have been 25 competitors that have died and about the same or a bit more of spectators who have been run over etc... and died

horrible music, awesome vid
someone really needs to make a game based on the dakar rally. there was one on the Gamcube but it kinda sucks.
nada volverá a ser como antes...el lago rosa,africa....
240p ? Not everyone is watching youtube on a iPhone 1.
the first things they only get stuck??
This is real adventure;
I think the worst part is the risk of someone crash on you from behind.
4:11 , nice fall!
Video title should read: "30 Years of Mostly Motorcyclists Falling Gently Into Soft Sand."
Grandes los motoristas!
It's soul destroying to pick up a heavy bike again and again on soft ground !
music track please @ 2:23 ?
Argentina... Main and best place of Rally Dakar in the world
Does anyone know why they use these kinds of bikes? they look nose heavy and the tires look like street tires??? If i was riding that desert, i'd rather have a WR450 or something a little more off road ready...

dear codemasters, new idea for a game and i want the while thing not just bits of stages
@golferchin76 sorry, it is 3:18
@msxxfast Pretty acrobatic though! :D
i know the crashes probably hurt but some of the motorbikers crashes look so funny when they drive like 2kph and just fall to the side hihi
@bulletmunger if u dont watch bikes doesnt mean nobody does :D
These guys aren't allowed to use paddle tires right? Yes I know it's a dumb question and it would help them
they are allowed to use any kind of tyre, but paddles are only good in deep sand, while here you also ride on many other types of roads...
It's Bruno Saby at 3:25
@thetoni87 not sure but lyrics sound indian.. from punjab
Who had the brilliant idea to organise a race through loose sand for motors?
that last one. XD
0:40 He was just hungry from working his ass off for that save. lol
This was the good Dakar what a shame the 3 decade heritage was killed after moving it to South America :(
0:07 Omg a real crash :D
last crash with pharao pose is Kari Tiainen
but why this stupid music...
Robert Urban pretty sure it's part of a tv show
1:43 André Malherbe

That is a tough race but i think i could do it!
3:41 LOL!
French rider Thomas Bourgin was killed yesterday in 2013 race. R.I.P.
@positech123 not to mention that they are racing for thousands of miles.. your gonna get tired andmake mistakes
@thetoni87 Nobody knows the name of the songs, including me... xD
haha
@positech123 and the locals also set traps to make them crash

2:45 OMG!!
@concreteandlashire most cars wont have the down force necessary to do this, so... no
Great Video Gay Music
4:40, i dont think we need subtitles to know what he was saying lol
@toolshedjunky "Yea yea yea, their bikes are heavy and they have been riding all day... all day seems like a fair amount of time to figure out how to ride on soft sand!!!"
