Kevin and Sarah, we have been having issues with Japanese beetles, and we were unable to get our garden in until the middle of June, we had some cold, rain and had some frost in June. Our garden is so far behind, and it is so sad. We also had a problem with a woodchuck, that ate 15 cabbages. This year for us has be so disappointing for us as well this year. We will be praying for y'all on your garden, as I know you do the garden for food and so do we. May God supply all of our needs even with all of our hardships.

I used to flag the fence. I cut strips of old t-shirts or whatever and tied it to the electric fence. I cut it up in about 12" strips so we had a tail to flap in the breeze once tied to the wire. It was a visible reminder of the fence. Then if we had to move the fence to a different area. The horses recognized the flags and knew a fence was there.
It also made it easier to find a break in the fence.
I suppose you could also use the plastic tape (survey tape). When first using flags. I tied one about every 5-8 feet. After they are used to it, then about every 10-12'.

When we had rabbits, during the summer we would put frozen bottles of water in the cages. They would roll them around and lay on them. It really helped them stay more comfortable.

Hi I don't know if you read our comments, But in case you do if time gets short if you cover with some plastic sheeting over a couple of saw horses and keep temps up about 85F or a bit more they will ripen . They need warm temps for ripening and less water from 2 or 3 weeks before they should be ripening. Too much water and you get cantalopes with a washed out nothing bland taste. If you get stem borers at first sign of frass near the base of the plants split the stem and remove the white maggot inside. then tape the stem shut it will usually heal. then put some moist soil over the stalk a few leaves toward the growing end and usually they will root, and save the plants Works for the vine crops. Rick in Pa.

My dad raised rabbits in KS and NM and when the heat would get really hot he would hang wet burlap bags over the cages and as the breeze passed through then it would lower the air temp. TFS

This is our first year to garden. We were inspired by watching your channel and a few other homesteading channels. We, too, have been hit hard by squash bugs and the vine boreres too. It was discouraging, so we can relate to your struggle this year. We enjoy watching your channel as we are learning so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. You are a blessing.

My rabbit hutch has 2x4s on the bottom outside edges. Its wide enough for them to hop onto while I move it. The downside is they can pee and poop on the wood, so some of it comes with them each move. I also built a second floor of hardware cloth they can jump up onto.

My sister used to put soda bottles with frozen water in them into the cages. The bunnies snuggled up when they were hot, and moved away from the bottles, but they were in elevated cages and it was very hot and dry in eastern Oregon

I live in Northern Ohio. We already have a short planting season. This years spring rains made our season even shorter. I planted my plants June 7th. The ground was still damp, even wet(mud) in some places. But I HAD to get them in the ground or risk never getting them in. Once they were planted. It rained for another several more weeks. So much rain. To the point that my peppers and tomatoes are pretty much lost. Thankfully my melon plants are rebounding. They are late because they were stunted by the rain. But if the weather holds out. I just maybe have some melons before Sept. 🤞

I enjoy your videos so much. I was raised in a small town and had a lot of chickens and ducks in our back yard. When my two younger sons wanted to raise hogs for FFA we had just moved to the country. We had a friend who had some shoats and we took the trailer to his place to pick them up. Well, he didn't have them penned so we spent a great deal of time trying to get them loaded and by the time we got home it was getting late and we had to put a pen together before dark. Not sure why the guys decided to get the piggies before building the pen. My oldest step son had raised hogs in Missouri, so he was a big help in getting us started in the hog business. When our first sow was about to farrow (we bought her already bred, so we didn't know exactly when she was due) so my oldest son and I spent the night in the farrowing house with her. I really enjoyed the little piggies. They are very lovable little critters. The kids are grown, I lost my husband in 2005, and retired from teaching in 2008 and I really miss the piggies. So, seeing yours is a real treat. And I have made your bread a couple of times. Love how easy it is to make a really nice loaf of bread. I added oats, chia seeds and sunflower seeds to the last one and really liked the way it turned out.

Rabbit cage with metal roof, even if white, creates a small oven-like effect. One side blocked with walls doesn't really allow for good air flow always, depends upon wind direction. We always placed our cages in the shade on hot days.

I knew that little girl was going to be trouble, and she got everybody put back in their starter pen. LOL I think it's all trial and error, that's the best way to learn. Pigs and goats are both hard to train, but I think goats can be a little more tenacious. I hope your cucumbers do well and that the rest of your garden survives The beatles, unfortunately I don't have any ideas that you haven't already tried.

It is encouraging that you also have problems as it makes one realise to just try again. As a relatively new food planter, I was a bit discouraged when my first planting last year totally flopped, due to excessive heat for weeks. But in a way it was a good lesson and my second planting went really well. I am now watching my winter garden as my broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts are looking fantastic and I expect them to start making heads anytime now. We have very mild winters and my basil did not even die, it is still green and giving leaves! The little naughty pig, but one cannot help chuckling at her cheekiness. The bunnies are so cute, I would not be able to eat them lol

I have lost half my melon plants to this vermin. They use my grow bags as their litterbox ..... I'm at wits end with them. If anyone knows a deterrent to keeping them out of your garden I'd love to know. Hopefully you can get your porkers back into the larger enclosure soon. Take care Kevin & Sarah.

David ... my sister swears by BITTER APPLE sprayed on things that animals chew. She is a professional dog raiser, plenty of experience with destructive chewing. Anyway, hope this will help your problem. Can you trap them in a ''have-a-heart'' trap and relocate them ... some towns will handle feral cats if you trap ... even to the point of jumping on the persons who feed them out of mistaken ''kindness''. Maybe someone at local AUDUBON society will have some ideas for you .... feral cats eat song birds. Back in my gardening day, l used to put rocks and twigs in places the cats used as cat box ... garden didn't look very tidy and neat, but waaay better than having that poop in my garden.

I noticed the grass was pretty high under the fence in the new pig pen and I was wondering how you plan on keeping the electric fence working. I have never had a problem with squash borers on watermelon plants .Cantaloupes might be another problem. If you would just try peppermint oil and water sprayed on your squash and pumpkin plants I think you would see a difference. It needs to be reapplied after every rain. We have such a problem with squash bugs that I quit growing them for two years.. It works for us. Do you still have your milking goats? I haven't seen them lately.

I've been hoping you would consider doing a more in depth pest identifying video that show close ups of the actual bugs as well as how you control them. I have no clue except just dumping some pesticides on them, and I'm trying to avoid that. Another suggestion: as you grow your garden, could you include segments about how, when and with what you are fertilizing. Other than the rabbit pellets, I haven't a clue. Thank you.

Hi guys. This is maybe too late because I remember a vid of yours where you were selling all the goats. I watch and enjoy lots of your vids. (Maybe even all of them.) I'm a small livestock homesteader/prepper, too!😊Anyway, been keeping Dairy goats for years. Now have only saanens. If you build them a multi-level playground of stumps and planks, that they can in no way have a foot entrapment on, and build or set it in the center of their confined area...they stay pretty much away from the fences. The key is that the center of the goat gymnasium is higher than the fence so that they look out and across the fence and over the rest of the view from a commanding height.

Hi! I really enjoy your videos. I found you a few month ago researching canning videos. I don't know how long you've been living in the Midwest but i learned gardening from my childhood and i know it might sound crazy but the old timers taught us here in southern Ohio to plant all our melons, cucumbers and squash in mounds of dirt above the ground because of the temperate weather here. You never know whats going to happen here in the Midwest. Not sure you ever tried this but its not an old wives tale. I think it just keeps the seeds out of water soaked ground like we have experienced this summer. We also floated row covers over them, especially with the bugs. Maybe you were aware of this and have tried it or maybe not. My mom always felt we got a better yield planting that way.

I love your videos and the comments; it's funny how so many of us think of the same things [especially, concerning the rabbits and the heat]..By the way, how is your daughter doing? is she fully recovered yet? I hope she is well...Also, how are the goats doing on weeding that one area? I can't wait to see how long it takes them to eat all of that.. I really enjoy watching you guys.. makes me think of growing up on the farm!
