You don't have to be moving to raise or lower the mower.... just put the tractor in neutral and let off the clutch which engages the PTO.... at that point you can raise or lower the mower. Once you have the mower up, depress the clutch, put the transmission in 1st (or whatever gear) and git bizzy. I also use a toplink that will keep the mower up without the pto being engaged.... it will also let you set the mowing height so you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting the positioning lever and dropping too low. Been using this tractor and style toplink since I was a kid. They do require more work/knowledge on the operator's part, but you can make your own repairs without breaking the bank, and they are just as safe as any newer tractor out there.... the key is learning to operate them (or any tractor) safely.

Dude not trying to be hateful but a lot of your problems are from not knowing what your doing. About 15 minutes of google searches will tell you the N series uses a PTO driven by the transmission and a overrunning clutch is always recommended when brushing with one. Also that hog is definitely on the larger size for a N tractor. On perfectly flat ground or field you can get away with a 5.5 or 6 foot but if your cutting hills or trails a 4 or 4.5 is way better matched and will not push the 2500lb tractor around as much. Your catching a lot flack because 80% of these that are still in use are used for cutting/mowing and as long as you use the proper size overrunning clutch which is usually under $75 they are excellent for that. Once again not trying to knock you or give you a hard time but a little bit of research and understanding your equipment goes a long way. I do wish you the best with the project.

      I agree and I never use a hog bigger than a 5

If possible, over running clutch should be mounted on implement side. No flywheel effect on drive shaft itself, when disengaged, if mounted on tractor side, the drive shaft itself still has flywheel inertia energy, even when first disengaged.

I used to have an 8N but went to a Jubilee because the Jubilee has a live lift (PTO doesn't have to be engaged). Makes a world of difference.
Edit: They both need the overrun clutch.

Luv my 8n and jubilee for brush hogging. I have big steep hills here in Tennessee.
The overrun clutch has been around for at least 40 years . Makes a good tractor great.
You can buy these tractors cheap because people are scared of them.
    Just my opinion!

This is not a tractor problem it's a operating problem. you need a manual to teach you how to run your tractor before you get hurt . You do not need to be moving for the lift to lift the bushog. Learn how to use the tools you have or get rid of them before they get rid of you.

Somebody already changed the phone shaft out to the slandered size shaft the areganl shaft was smaller 1 and an 1/8 . You could get the right size shaft back in the late 50's.

Yeah that’s a better install than the roll pin! Good video!

Hi. Thanks for the video. So does the overrun clutch stop the PTO from pushing the tractor forward after you push the clutch on the tractor down? Is that the main point? Noob here (obviously). Thanks.

Yes. It let's it free wheel.

@@bucksgarage1 thanks for the reply and for the explanation. I read that most modern flail mowers have a built-in overrun clutch. Is that your understanding, too?

    • @bucksgarage1
      @bucksgarage1  3 роки тому

@@scrumpymanjack I haven't ever used a flail mower. I would think that if the manufacturer says the the mower has one installed you wouldn't need one on the tractor side also.

Hi Brett, cool old tractor. At one time we were going to buy 11 acres so was checking out old tractors for sale. The 8N was a common one around here but the most costly even old ones. I was looking at a farmall when we decided to get a place we no longer needed a tractor. Like that your dad can help you

An over running clutch makes it better, but still not as good as a live PTO. Oliver super 55 and 550 have truly independent PTO with a completely separate clutch and clutch lever.

I think its always a good idea for all to take tractor safty. You can actually do it online. One forum i belong to, you had to pass the test before you could post anything. Another thing, learn/research the tractor before jumping on it so there isnt any surprises. This would have helped you figure out, the pto drives the hydraulic pump that makes the 3 point work. You would have also figured out a bush hog will drive a tractor forward without live pto. Because of the momentum of blades. I run a 5 footer on my farmall super c and yes, itll do the same if im not careful. You have to learn the tractor, especially before someone gets hurt.
