I wrote this blurb about a year ago. it was inspired by Greggs Grateful Dawg transcription: I just found a note for note transcription of one of Garcia's rhythm parts. I was surprised to discover that it was just as thoughtful and inventive as his lead playing. Aside from that though, I realized that there was a profound life lesson also expressed therein. He kept it as minimal and simple as possible, but never missed an opportunity to syncopate a rhythm or to add outside notes to create tension. These embellishments never once crowded or "stepped on" the music or soloist. His role was so subtle that it was barely perceptible in the grand scheme of things, but absolutely essential nevertheless. No wasted notes. No haphazard strumming. Every action deliberate, and with purpose. And there were no repeating patterns. As the chords cycled he would apply fresh rhythms and embellishments. Every expression was unique to the moment. So...know your role. Treat every moment, every action, as if it means everything. Do not waste energy. Make everything count. Be spontaneous, but purposeful. Avoid monotony. Take chances, but with care, and strategy. Do not get in the way of others, and offer the best support that you can. Maximum mindfulness at all times. Live your life the way that Jerry played guitar.
I would love to see this amazing transcription. Any interest in sharing? BTW I agree with you fully about his comping style. On the version of this tune that Craig is demonstrating, Jerry's killing it behind himself and Melvin. So funky.
A little late to the party but this is simply excellent. I love this tune and the solo on this version is just killer. Really helping me learning how to play over changes. Really appreciate Patreon tabs for this one. Thank you!
This version of this tune is one of my all-time favorite Garcia Band takes. Jerry is so in the pocket and the musical ideas are just non-stop. Thanks dude.
Rockin'. I am grateful that I have seen Jerry play this live....

Jerry sent Craig to us to spread the word. Love it man never even heard this song before but that’s what it’s about!

Love it. one of my fave jams in the early 90s. So many cool pauses that are better than notes.
Mine too!!
Thanks once again Craig.
I saw the Legion of Mary play this at the Bottom Line in NY. Personal favorite.

Did you make this backing track? And is it available? I looked for it on your website as well. I would certainly pay for it if too. Thanks!
Craig - is it possible to get the tab on a page?
Nice one, but beat 122 was a hammer-on, not a slide, and you were off by a dotted 128th note on beat 2.64 in measure 9. Just kidding. Perfect. lol
Initially..i thought you were being serious....then i got a kick out of it
Craig is a master of Jerry interpretation
