An idea my mother did when we were growing up was to have us 5 kids work with her in the kitchen on one of the weekends days to batch cook the meals for the week. Chopping, peeling, mixing, and putting several meals together for our big family. She was an emergency room nurse who often worked doubles to help raise our family and earn more money. We all worked together for the greater good and strength of our whole family and to help our mother, who worked so hard.

Vitamin D Hope. Did your doctor check your level? If not, get that lab done, then ask if you should be taking a D supplement during the healing process.

Thank you so much for sharing this. How wonderful that you have these special memories. Many hands make light work! I enjoy when my youngest (the only single child) comes home from college in the summer. We are a good team in the kitchen too. I also love when my granddaughter comes - she's a gem in the kitchen and also helps put up the Christmas tree. I really enjoy doing chores as a team - so much more do-able.

The other day I came home late and super tired. I so felt a need for pizza, but February is my no spend month. Suddenly I had an idea: toast, tomato paste, salami and cheese put in the sandwich maker. Voila pizza like dinner in minutes! And so yummy, too! 🎉🎉

I spent my whole life living frugal as I hated my job for 30 years even tho I made a lot of changes within my profession (nursing. Soooo….. my goal was to retire early! I retired at 60! I’m living life now! I have even more time now to spend on frugality and praise the Lord, God continues to provide and it seems even better than when I was actually working honestly. I am single. I was able to reach my goal very easily… looking back Thank you, Lord!

I invested in glass leftover containers that stack well in my freezer. As a single person, cooking produces about 5-6 servings of leftovers. Cost $80 on stackable containers, but now I'm super organized and have 4 different recipes (about 20 servings) that I can grab out of my freezer. Works well for me.

@@rebeccam2565 I like the glass but the glass containers for me would require buying more. I am storing 30 plus meals and cost is an issue. I went to the glass tops with a vacuum seal and used them in the refrigerator but they can be high priced. In the winter I make bulk pulled pork and all my other meats for the year. The heat from cooking in the winter is a positive vs doing it in the summer. In another 2-4 weeks all the bulk food packages for the summer will be ready and the freezer filled. Great to hear how you store things.

I'm ill myself, but I HAD to leave the house to make an ebay shipment. I stopped off for some takeout, which broke my personal eating out rule. I had vowed I would only eat at restaurants with others as a social occasion, and I would follow a strict budget of $75 per month. I have decided to add "illness" as an acceptable reason for OCCASIONALLY eating out.

You might also want to consider when soups are on sale getting a few cans. Beef vegetable with ramen noodles can few 2 hearty meals or stretch to 4 with bread and butter. Sick meal planning is a must to stay on budget.
If you eat out at chain restaurants, lower your cost with discounted gift cards (10-50% off, 20% is normal), join the loyalty program and if the restaurant has oversized meals, I ask for a to go box and put in 50% immediately and then set it aside. If I get strange looks,I just say I’m trying to not overeat, must people get it. I refrain from dieting as people get tired of dieters. I’m usually enjoying the company so much I don’t notice I eaten everything and now feel yucky. Just a thought, hope this helps.

    • @katv1195
      @katv1195 4 місяці тому +1

Good idea adding "illness" to the reasons. It keeps in mind that feeling unwell is a reason/trigger for eating out. If getting a little takeout then really helps you physically and emotionally, perhaps you could allocate a few dollars a month to saving for "medicinal food". So you can let build up to say $30 and use it for takeout or juice or something else you need/want when you're unwell.

Glad to see the "Team of Hope and Larry"" back together again ! I took a tip from my Depression Era Mom. She would always have snacks in her purse and a big water bottle if we were going anywhere in the car. At home she made sure that if we kids were home alone, we knew how to fix "Mac and Cheese" or some other simple meal until she got home from working over time. And if she was sick , we knew there was extra cans of soups/frozen pre-made dinners she made extra on Sundays to get us through for a couple of days.

When my 2 boys were at home, they were responsible for planning and preparing dinner one night a week. This helped them learn to plan and cook, and it was nice to come home from work and have dinner ready! We did go through a stage where we ate a lot of hot dogs and mac and cheese...lol

Things were so tight at our house though we knew how to cook and clean up afterwards, we still had to ask to be sure we weren’t using some ingredient she had planned for another meal. There was almost always apples or cheese slices for a cheese sandwich. But usually we asked the night before what was available the next day.

quick story ... I am 75 yr old great granma... on Sundays I carry 3 yr od and 5 yr old to Bible class worship...getting out at 11:30 they are usually hungry not having eaten breakfast so we stop at McDonalds for small smoothies and share. I absolutely do not put that kind of thing on credit card! One Sunday I said I don't have money (cash) for 3 smoothies so we'll share 2. Then we usually go by local Mom/Pop bakers for apple fritter (shared). Oldest says "do we have enough money for apple fritter?' I said yes because we only got two smoothies. Her mama later jumped all over me saying 5 yr old was worried about me not having any money for food! Parents beware talking about money when littles are around because they hear more than you give them credit for. Always explain!!!

Have been quite frugal for 15 years with the mistake of not making fun money a regular thing, even if modest. Recent bills all up 5, 14, 24, 30, 50, 100% etc. on a super lean budget is a true challenge. Love the habit stacking idea, to pare an easy habit with one that needs establishing. Gotta go do something!

This weekend I had a splurge. I ordered pizza to be delivered. I'm still so tired from COVID. As I was feeling bad about having it delivered, I realized that this pizza is going to feed me for at least 7 meals. :) Even with the delivery it isn't quite the splurge I was upset about. I need to plan for the next time, so it doesn't come out of my grocery budget. Thank you for the encouragement.

If you to eat dairy, I came up with a really quick way to make macaroni and cheese and it's very cheap! I buy a large bag of elbow pasta from Trader Joe's and the the elbows are very large and the package is only $99. I cook the pasta and put it on a plate add a couple pats of butter and a slice or two of Swiss cheese or cheddar cheese, whichever one you like and I microwave it for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese! Then I add a vegetable and my mother likes to have applesauce or yogurt and it's very filling it's delicious and easier than macaroni and cheese that you put in the oven in a casserole dish. The other thing I would suggest to you is what my coworker used to call 'something on toast', and that is made with toast, one or two pieces with butter and topped with cream of celery soup. The other thing that is very good but the same idea is to take buttered toast and put scrambled eggs on top of the toast and then cover that with pea soup. It sounds ridiculous but it is actually quite delicious. I like the Amy's brand of pea soup because it's flavorful and doesn't have a lot of preservatives and things in it that I don't want to eat. I think even Larry could manage these😂

Sometimes you may say I will never be able to afford this hobby at my income. Many times deals come around that makes it affordable Today's example: I like to play around with leather working and sometimes like today I had to pull the trigger on some supplies and tools. I figure it was bought at under 10 cents on the dollar. I don't consider it a splurge because my hobbies have an amount I spend on it each year. I was also given two 1/2 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood. The price for the wood is around $40 a full sheet. The types of deals listed are giving me the ability to live what some people consider a 60K year lifestyle for under 20k a year.
Glad to see Hope is back on your videos! Larry you did a great job filling in!

Hello, Hope! We are glad you are on the mend and back on the channel. More than five years ago, I had what sounds like the same fracture. Apparently it is one of the most common. Weirdly, it was my left shoulder and I am also left-handed. It was a very challenging time! PT was very helpful and I still do the exercises I learned then. Hang in there and you will get better.

To avoid going out to eat when I'm tired, I buy a few convenience foods at Aldi. Maybe some egg rolls, a pizza or anything I can throw into the air fryer. It's not really that expensive and it's way better for me. Aldi has some nice inexpensive selections.

I'm glad you're both doing better.❤ We buy fun easy food at the grocery store. It's cheaper to buy the stuff for subs, pizza etc at the grocery store. It feels like a splurge for half or less of the price of going out.

Hope and Larry, my husband and I have made it. We are a debt free, mortgage free couple with a substantial retirement account. We love your channel. We are living on our social security and a small pension amount monthly. We have a monthly budget and pay ourselves first thing. That is a mistake many retired people make is to not continue saving. We have lived frugal our whole married life, no need to change now. We are going to travel to see our kids in AZ and NY and that will be our spluges for the year.
