  • This morning six swallowtail butterflies broke free from their chrysalis but which one to put the camera on? I got lucky.The last time I picked the wrong one. Every summer my garden is invaded by these guys so i plant extra parsley and wait for the show. This is an Eastern Black Swallowtail. Enjoy the video and don't forget to subscribe to getawaymoments!!!

    Sublime. Fellow butterly lover here. Always good to know someone else is planting plants for the caterpillars. I've got one of these now feeding on parsley.

    Excellent, they become slightly translucent before the emerge.
    I also noticed that it almost always happens in the morning.
    Good luck!

    Put a parsley plant on my porch. Got 3 black swallowtail caterpillars. I put them in clear plastic cups taped together with holes in the top cup, placed them on the window sill and fed them store parsley that I kept fresh in water. 1 died and two made chrysalises. I used a dab of E6000 to glue the chrysalises to a dry cup. I'm waiting now for them to emerge. Be sure not to let them get too hot. I killed my giant swallowtails caterpillars this way. The last time I raised a butterfly was in the 4th grade (I'm 44 now) but it was a spicebush swallowtail so I could play with it without it squirting stink juice on me.

    I have been growing parsley for months trying to get them, no luck, went out of town for a few days and boom the parsley is almost gone, now I have five caterpillars with tummy aches.

    • @Getawaymoments

      Rachel B They usually hatch in the morning but not always. The chrysalis changes color and transparency right before they emerge. It takes loads of patience.

      Jenny Parkhurst They should go soon, mine went after a week or so. I think climate in your area will affect the gestation length.

      Rachel B watch the chrysalis. When you can see through it the time is near for them to eclose...the technical term for coming out of the chrysalis or “being born”, which tho not actually what’s happening, is an apt description for us regular folk.

    I have 2 black tails that I found on my parsley. I kept them and now they r cocoons. The 1 hasn't been like that for 2-3 weeks and the other just changed over 4 days ago. How long will it take fpr them to become butterflys??

    please advise as to size of chrysalis and time between that stage and next. I had 12 caterpillars in one dill planting and 3 in another. I am worried about what may have happened. Thank you from an anxious Mum! :-) :-)

    • @marykinnamon688
      @marykinnamon688 8 років тому

      Once the caterpillar is ready to go into chrysalis they purge their bowels. Once they purge they scurry off to find a place to go into chrysalis. They can travel fast and far. The chrysalis stage is approx 10-18 days and the butterfly lives about 4-6 weeks.

    • @pollyhorlander7389
      @pollyhorlander7389 4 роки тому

      Andrea mcgoldrick protect them from wasps in the spring as they steal them to feed their babies! Sheers are a good thing to put over the plants or bring them in to a protected enclosure. I’ve made screened shelters, too. Those pop up laundry baskets are good, too, just slip it over the plant. I’ve only had one swallowtail but many, many monarchs .last fall. My swallowtail just pupated this morning!

    That Black Swallowtail is a male because I saw that it has more bright yellow to his wing pattern.
    The Eastern Black Swallowtail is sexually dimorphic, so it’s easy to determine if they’re male or female by their wing pattern.

      @@Getawaymoments Your welcome. If you look up Eastern Black Swallowtail, the two genders of the butterfly will show.
      Fun fact: Monarch Butterflies have a way to check if they are male or female. Male Monarchs have two black dots on the lower wing when they open, the females don’t have it.
