Just so everyone knows - this is Christopher Guest enjoying the interview.
Exactly.
Steve Ellis Oof! I love them both but that was painful at times. What happened?
Guest is so funny! I love his dry, sly sense of humor. Although, I can understand how people less familiar with his personality could misinterpret his demeanor as disinterested.
Guest is incredibly funny and interesting to listen to... I'm a bigtime fan of his films. Most notably, 'Waiting for Guffman'. His and Kevin's playing off each other is just great to watch!
Interview starts at 4:28
After Kevin is done blowing himself
Ha! Exactly - thanks
When I see this guy, he's still Nigel Tufnel to me.
Happy 70th Birthday Christopher Guest
Christopher Guest is the best. He rarely does interviews (and rightly so), so it makes it even more special when he does things like this. I wish he made a movie every year like Woody Allen. Mascots was excellent too!
Guest and Pollak know each other well and are friends. They worked together on Morton and Hayes.
Much love for Christopher! Still to this day my favorite line is: "you can't dust vomit"
"you can't dust FOR vomit"
Best leave it unsolved
That interview was amazing.
I LOVE that Pollak can barely keep up with Guest here. I've never seen someone as outwardly relaxed yet inwardly sharp as Christopher Guest and for Pollak, who... let's face it, doesn't have a style that lends itself to subtlety this is just interesting to watch.
Kevin is so uncomfortable w Guest. KP needs to stop being so self absorbed
This appearance is far superior to the first. I was surprised that he came back. Seems like he wants people to "get" him and his humor a little more. This was wonderful.
I was kind of surprised he came back too. It just goes to show all his trying-to-end-the-interview-early schtick from before was just fooling around and that he enjoyed himself. Taking into account his dry sarcastic comedy, there's nothing all that cringe-y in his interviews - though he is undeniably defensive/overly sensitive on some points. The only really cringe-y moment in KPCS that I've seen is during the Ivan Reitman one where he is checking his watch and says he really needs to get out of there. Yikes. The only time I've ever seen that happen in an interview. To be fair, he did do one of the longest interviews ever, nearly 2 1/2 hours.
What amuses me is that his schtick angers people. I love it all and it makes me laugh. You can learn a lot on how to deal with people you don't want to talk to.
Interesting. I really liked the first one as Guest actually belly laughed a few times. He also told some great stories such as when he was in drama class or when he was a ticket collector.
Funny guy but doesn't tolerate fools/foolish questions.
I like it.
I haven't laughed this hard in a long time, I literally peed in my pants from laughing at one point. Chris Guest is right up my alley as far as humour goes, thanks for this gem!
Amazing! More Christopher Guest please!
Guest owning it. So happy I found this. Funny.
This may be the most perfect interview in existence.
The famous question at 4:25 is the funniest part of this entire series, and I've watched at least almost, some of the episodes.
This is Christopher Guest as I've always wanted to see him. When Kevin Pollak interviews him, he seems more at ease (than with other hosts) and willing to share. Mr. Guest is always funny; even when he's being defensive, and caustic, and peevish, if you watch closely you can see what he's doing: playing with people. Verbally, conceptually, socially, musically, intellectually, he quietly demands that you rise to his standards. Whereas you do not, he will calmly shred you. With Pollak he spars a bit, but because Pollak is just as quick a wit it doesn't bring the interview to a halt. Anyway, I love to hear Guest tell stories and share trade "secrets" or at least just talk about the biz, in a frank and light-hearted way that just thrills me as a fan of his since 1983.
I still can't believe so many people believe Guest was being "difficult" years ago, or conversely blame Pollak's skills as an interviewer. This is Guest being Guest, in the same way Grodin busted Letterman's chops by acting standoffish. The tension of the first interview made it funnier in my view, but this was pretty fun.
If you watch his studio stuff with National Lampoon or even in Lemmings, he seems like a serious guy.
I enjoyed this interview. Surprised me as I had no idea who this guest guy is.
"Is this over?" - Christopher Guest(about half way through this interview:)
Takes me to best in show... And his fly fishing map bit
Luved that.
I appreciate that scene more and more each time I see it.,. They really focus on what's important.
his brother telling him to stop and sleep on his trip if he gets tired, that cracks me up, he tells him that many times 😂
I learned so much about what it's like to be a drama actor.
I stumbled upon “The Big Picture” on TCM a few weeks ago. It’s a solid Saturday night at home movie. Just a delight.
I think 56:23, the "drama acting bit" proves he's enjoying the interview.
The female studio head who butted heads with Guest over "The Big Picture" was Dawn Steel. Steel became the movie industry's first female mogul in 1987, when she was named president of Columbia Pictures. According to IMDB, Steel's nickname was the Queen of Mean. She died of a brain tumor in 1997 at the age of 51.
Delightful guest!
Damn. He’s a bit like interviewing John Lydon.
Thumbs up on the Zelig references... one of my all time favorites!
It's funny to me how often Christopher Guest is taken aback.
40:02 I love hearing when foreigners say their favourite football club is Manchester United. I already loved Christopher Guest. Love him a bit more now.
Yeah, i love it when I hear foreigners say their favourite club is Bristol City. Not heard one yet, but i'm sure there are some out there...
Hardly a foreigner, as he has dual citizenship and is a Baron, but I get what you're saying.
Was he born in the UK or are his parents British? Uh, nope I rest my case
Oops. I just read his father was one of us lol 1/2 one of us then
He also was raised part time there, so the notion of having a favorite football club is not that shocking, unless he said the New Jersey Generals. That would just be confusing on many levels.
C Chadwick his dad is british
Next time, please have Jamie Lee Curtis and Guest on together. Would be fascinating to watch how they interact. And, sure, go ahead and ask them softball questions about "what makes a happy marriage" and whatnot. I'm assuming their answers will be smart and startling.
There's a video on youtube if you search, of Jamie introducing Chris to give an environmentalist award to Ed Begley Jr. It's pretty funny and you can see Jamie cracking up at him. A sweet moment that you rarely see. There's a lot of rumors of them both being in the closet and being each other's beard, but I don't buy it.
Much love and many thanks from Windsor, ON, Canada!
1973saoirse detroit east. Lol
I spent a couple of weeks in Scotland in the 80's. After being there for a fews days, I started thinking in their accent. And as I gradually traveled, the accent in my head changed to what it was around me. The brogue didn't really start until up near Melrose/Tweedswood ua-cam.com/video/73uATsa8y5Y/v-deo.html
1:06:20 "Is this the same year as "Live and Let Die" or was that really long ago?" Genius.
Especially because you can be sure he hates it so much.
The bit at 56:22 is freakishly good.
Who does Christopher Guest have less tolerance for, Kevin Pollak or David Alan Grier?
Great show !!
Greetings from South Australia ;)
It takes a talented host like Kevin to handle a DeNiro-esque guest like this. And as always, Kevin makes it work, makes it funny.
Jeff Sawyer he’s really quick on his feet, and he has very high emotional IQ too
Best Drama-Acting ever,
Dawn Steel was the studio executive who thought Guest's movie was about her.
"you're soooo vaaaaainnnnnnn, I bet you think this film is about youuuuuuuu"
"The fact that there is a venomous woman studio chief is pure coincidence." - The wry Christopher Guest
She penned a book entitled "They Can Kill You, But They Can't Eat You"
If Chris finds an interview with Kevin hard to bear, what must he be like around Ricky?
Boy is Christopher quick. Pollack has that recognizable Jewish wise guy wit, like a Billy Crystal, but Guest takes the mental agility to another, more absurd level.
you want the fresh air and the scenery but not the hard life ..
@15:20 Guest seems like a Scary man to audition for - a bit mean, even! He could play Clint Eastwood's Walt in Gran Torino.
I have. and he is!

You can tell the fan from the non-fan. All fans of Christopher Guest know that he hates interviews. The fact that he not only granted an interview but a _long_ interview is a joy for all fans.
On a side note, the studio head who succeeded David Puttnam at Columbia was Dawn Steel. By all accounts she was a very unpleasant person. She died of brain cancer in 1997.
This is also his second long interview with Kevin, the first was way longer than this even. They obviously are friendly. In the previous interview they even talk about going out to dinner together. Anything that makes it seem otherwise is just schtick.
Watching this is like pulling teeth!!!
4:26 for Guest the guest.
Guest and Micheal McKean have the same out-of-character deadpan.
I haven't noticed that - McKean seems like a totally normal amiable guy in interviews. Guest clearly has some interpersonal issues but I still enjoy him in these.
There's several moments later where you can tell Kevin is a bit 'over it' with the fake antagonism.
Stick with this interview. It gets great later on.
the curmudgeon's curmudgeon...love him!
Christopher seems to be doing his best to be sincere and humble; but I'm sure it's challenging for him to a degree. This is not a criticism at all, because I understand how one's own internal thought processes can be at odds with how one is perceived. What might seem brilliantly funny to yourself, can appear to others to be unintentionally condescending and cruel. Self-awareness is sometimes difficult for a genius.
Also, his parents were British. Probably why his humor is so dry.
You know it's a low budget show when they drink Kirkland water from Costco.
anthony risola You know it's a broken system when you are not only afraid to drink from the tap, but going next level up with water snobbery.
NO it's how *are* you like Kenny G and how are you *not like* Kenny G. I demand this interview is restaged so we can get an answer.
Man, I really wonder who the person is that ended up not working out.
Probably whoever was in Waiting For Guffman who wasn't in his later movies.
Sounds like Amy Pascal as the female executive
Go to 4:25 to cut the bullshit.
Great conversation. That has to be more than a bit distracting though when you're just talking and not doing anything funny or trying, and people are still cracking up.
Susan Yeagley is married to Kevin Nealon.
Getting a strange Malcolm Gladwell vibe in his speech.
I think Kevin is intimidated by Guest. Really intimidated.
this interview looks like a police interogation
🤣🤣🤣
13
Clicked away after getting tired of the 15 minute underwear commercial and 3 minute intro.
funny yet awkward
Norm MacDonald live is sooo much better than this
said like a real douchebag!! bravo douchebag.
The assistant/co-host's pretentiousness is nauseating.
The slow blood archaeologically kiss because watchmaker architecturally sparkle onto a dry litter. instinctive, lumpy van
Guest is a comedic genius. He's also a prick. He's also a genius. Nobody like him.
best skip the 2nd half, guest REALLY doesn't wanna be there. looking forward to lauren graham though.
I love Kevin and really like Guest, but Christopher doesn't seem like he wants to be there. I know he is dry, and that's part of who he is, but he comes off as disinterested. Since he's not producing cringe worthy moments, I don't think this is him just "playing around".
I concur
Yeah I was just coming here to comment about his energy and attitude. He is not connected. I also thought there was gratuitous laughter by the crew (Jamie and Sam); it seemed forced. Painful episode.
he always acts like this in interviews, its an act trust me.
This is his 2nd time being on. I'm sure he wouldn't have done it if he didn't like it. I'm stunned he was on again, actually.
I was gonna say he seems like he's in a really good mood. He was never cracked a smile in his first appearance.
Liked the interview but Christopher Guest does not want to give out info it's like hitting with a bat, he is brilliant but losen up man. Ur boring really. Ur wife is awesome interview.
