  • Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece Barry Lyndon returns to cinemas from 29 July. Enjoy a new take on the stunning epic drama with the film’s first new trailer in 40 years. To buy tickets and for more information visit www.bfi.org.uk/...
    UK-USA-Ireland 1975
    Dir Stanley Kubrick
With Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee
    184min
    PG
With its meticulous historical accuracy and its astonishing visual beauty, Kubrick’s most underrated work is also probably his greatest. Deriving its story and characters (but not its tonal delicacy) from Thackeray’s comic novel about an 18th-century rake, the film deploys a stately pace to chart the rise and fall of Redmond Barry (O’Neal) as he flees Ireland, travels Europe and eventually seduces his way into the English aristocracy. Expertly combining caricature with actorly restraint while creating immaculate painterly tableaux with natural light or candles, Kubrick creates a world that feels ineffably strange yet utterly real. As he quietly castigates not the conniving protagonist but the hypocritical, complacent society he determines to join, the mood steadily shifts from irony to melancholy and, finally, tragedy. - Geoff Andrew

One of the best films in history, this film wasn't filmed in 24 frames per second, it was filmed in 24 paintings per second, each frame it's like a Leonardo Da Vinci piece of art.Kubrick was beyond our time.

I like it how Kubrick played with the audience. First he made us really care for Barry and we wanted to see him reach his goal. But when he finally did, our beloved main character became so despicable that you feel bad for caring about this guy before.

Barry Lyndon is a film that grows on you with multiple viewings. Even more so than other Kubrick movies. It lives in the Shadow of his other movies like 2001, The Shining and A Clockwork Orange, but with time and multiple viewings it transcends even his other masterpieces and elevates itself as not only Kubrick's greatest film, but possibly the greatest film ever made. A visually breathtaking folk tale about life and fate.

For many of you who hates the new trailer, I understand that its annoying cause somehow it takes away classicism from a classic, the point is that if we want nee viewers to appreciate this masterpiece, it needs to be introduced it in a captivating way according to modern standards.
The movie is a masterpiece and anyone will understand it but the advertisements need to get the attention of the potential viewer and right now that old trailer would do no favour since no one gives a damn about someone else opinion but his own instinct.

So as a fan of Kubrick movies, I ended up watching it last night when I finally felt like it. I think that put me in a mood to enjoy it, versus being like "ok, let's just get this over with."
Review: It was a lengthy yet interesting story about Barry's journey as a poor young man going from the village to a life of aristocracy. I won't say any plot lines, but it had the classic 'hero's journey' storyline. I thought it was going to bore me like other classics that were highly rated, like Citizen Kane and Mulholland Drive (not for me). But it was very unique and different, with all the ups and downs you'd get from a great film. Visually beautiful and I really felt attached to Barry as the movie progressed. I see myself watching it again at some point. If you're a Kubrick fan, you gotta watch it. 8/10

Very well made film that I can watch over and over. Don't let this trailer fool you though it's not a fast paced thrill ride, it's slow and every scene feels like it has an inevitability about it.

I love my film directors Spielberg David Lean, Hitchcock and the rest but Stanley Kubrick was truly a genius that word gets mentioned too many time but actually was and he could only work out of Britain and didn’t leave Britain for his films

Terribly underrated movie that has been treated so badly. You know Lenard Rossiter was a national treasure. He was in 2001 you know. There's another good seventies gem out there called the Duelists which is also worth a watch. I agree with the comments below about the music. An assault on the ears.

Great movie. I saw it in 2004 (a DVD movie rental) and was blown away, mostly by the soundtrack. I'm a sucker for movies with amazing soundtracks. It's been awhile. I guess I'll stream it on my flat screen tonight---sorry Blockbuster.

So many films today are “throwaway” movies - to be consumed by the viewer and then discarded. Not Kubrick’s films - they are meant to be viewed over and over for a lifetime and never lose their appeal.

Hopefully when the film celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025 it will get a limited release similar to the one 2001 got in 2018. I'd love to see this on a big screen, preferably in an IMAX format. I think Barry Lyndon is his last true masterpiece. I've lost count of the number of times I have watched the film and it never fails to engage me into the story, the characters, and the world he created. It's a shame it failed to find a wider audience but Kubrick must have realised that this was almost predestined to have a very limited audience. If people thought it was going to be a swashbuckling adventure story they were going to be very disappointed. I've never once found it boring.

Everyone seems to miss the idea that the trailer is made so that more people will watch it. The actions set pieces make it more appealing to the bigger audiences. So quit whining about the music, action. They are doing kubrick a favor by drawing in a bigger audience.
