Ask Roger to do these things in the future please. Jenn used most of the space with that fire pit. People will end up placing their stools on the soil to be far enough from the heat and smoke.
Love the fire pit. However the outdoor elements don't flow very well. Modifying the deck railing and opening it up to the fire pit would be very beneficial.
Honestly, as someone who does landscape construction, the way she is laying down the patio blocks is incredibly inefficient. Painful to watch and shes installing the blocks perfectly level, enjoy standing water on the patio...
Michael Yoo To go with the theme of the house they needed to do more of a brick patio as that probably would have been the material that people would have used back then
Bluestone dust is usually a bad idea....holds too much moisture. If you live up north you're going to have frost heaves, and that patio will be a mess in a couple of years. Better to go with 3/4 stone (about 8 inches) then fabric, then a couple inches of clean sand which you run a compactor over. You don't put down the patio stone till after you've screeded the whole thing.
A long level will work or pick up a nice straight piece of 2x4 and rest your level on top checking your levels. The 2x4 extents your level's reach. But thats one way of course.
These stone blocks are okay for a seaside harbor wavebreaker, but really out of style ugly both the reclaimed jail stone, both its arrangement. Actually I was surprised TOH planned this. Also I see they couldnt make stone patio and pit easier than this Lego Duplo blunt monolith parts. But easiness really killed aesthetics.
Really missed roger on this one. Too many things were done wrong for this video for it to be useful. Given, this is how many contractors would do this job, but Roger et al. Always too top quality work, not mid grade work. No geo textile to prevent the fines and crushed stone from washing out. No consideration given for drainage. She may have excavated 12 inches. But I still saw more organic soil than I would be comfortable with at that level. There is no means of retaining the base, or stone. Wish I lived around there, because some lucky contractor is going to make a lot of money fixing this mess in 5 to 10 years
Finding Roger is the haahd paaht.
lol!
How about the Garrdeen!
Strong lady. Knows her stuff.
I like Jenn shes a nice addition to TOH. Its no secret that Rodger is getting on in his years so leave the tough work to younger blood.
The only young ones are Jenn, Kevin and Ross, the other 4 have been at it since the early days back in the late 60s and early 70s.

she's a badass wielding mallets and splitting granite
:27 "does that space look adequate?" Well it better be,cause they already dug it up.
I love these videos
Jeez, what great conversationalist.
The border around the bluestone looks unfinished. As if plans still need to be planted around it, but otherwise it looks great!
They probably have other future plans considering they didn't resod around it.
I'm sure you're right, I just wished we saw it come to fruition.
I agree...they literally only show three seconds of the finished project on TOH, whatever it is.

Had the same thought
Would have been better to start alignment from the deck landing but perhaps there is an easement or septic there, or just poor planning?
Where and how does the water drain?? Its level
I was wondering the same thing! 4 years later though. LOL
@@Delekham Lmao I guess we will never know
question what kind of software or program you guys use
pancho villa For what? Editing the videos? Designing the gardens? Controlling their home automation hardware? Pacemaker?
Deported

mike arndt , that was my thought at first glance... Where is the pitch, and where is the water going to drain to? AND WHERE IS RODGER???
I think rodger is rather on the booze poor fella
@4:27: Suggestion, Jen: Don't bang on a stone with your level (or any other precision instrument) on it.
Tbh the bluestone and firepit looks really modern idk how thats traditional maybe I'm just terrible at design haha

better to run a jumping jack on the sub base, plate compactor just vibrates, its meant for compacting loose gravel material, not dirt.
good luck
Rogah!
Wouldnt be code in Florida
we are going to use stone dust here because... thats what we brought.. >_>
Fire pit will use up all that space when it’s lit. Better to put on the edge or corner. IMO 35 years scaping
for all you folks complaining about drainage.... There's a simple fix; just put a little plastic cap on top when the pit is not in use. Easy. $2 fix.
i love how half the comments are of insecure men making lame comments at the woman. She did a fine job
Ooh la la, someone's gonna get laid in college.
that's a woman right there

Rodger where are you
how do they make sure the stone dust/3/4" stone foundation is level ?

String my friend
looks nice, might use this on our 1806 Stone House restoration. check out our channel if you're interested.
☺
Can't you do stamped concrete to look like blue stone.
Pavel
that pit is worth way more then my car wtf
Gosh they made you do it yourself instead of letting your crew help you. Damn production team!!!!
The blue dont look so blue :/
That's a really ugly fire pit lol...
It's not supposed to be pretty. They want that old natural look. That fire pit is solid granite I actually like it.
i like it. Old and rustic looking
So true -

Why didn't they put down sand
They should have....much better than crushed bluestone.
I was wondering the same thing
Smh
Never post another video without at least ONE person with a boston accent. The fuck guys? C'mon...
a man could do the job in half the time
“yea it looks great” it’s a fucking dirt hole

that fire pit is ugly as hell
This Old House needs to get away from being woke.
Roger is better. Informative and just better all around. This was horrible. The whole setup.
