Just wanna add that you can also do this with colors! Precomp all of this, get another copy of the animation base, put it under the precomp and set as a luma matte. Thank you Ben!
Thanks for the tip!
thanks a lot, i was wondering how to do that while watching the tutorial.
very usefull
You are a hero, I was wondering how to do this.
😁😁😁
@@olaoluwaoyenuga8511 Umm...thats Tom Brady
Excellent way to create a halftone effect. Adding to what Ben demonstrated, you can control the detail level by adding a Luma Key (set to Key out Lighter), then a Simple choker (positive numbers for less details, negative for more) under the Levels effect in the adjustment layer. Then add a Solid Composite to bring the background back.
Also, for those wanting the dot grid grid to be offset or made of a different shape:
1) instead of a solid with CC Ball action, pre-comp a pattern, perhaps made with shapes, repeaters or Repetile; or use a static pattern image with a tint applied and Extract or Luma Key to create an alpha of only the pattern.
2) in the main comp do the camera lens blur with levels technique Ben shows to get the halftone effects.
3) To add a subtle boost to your workflow, donate lots of money to Ben Marriott so he can keep making awesome tutorials like this.
Amazing tips! Thanks for sharing my friend :D
Awesome extra tip on creating a grid of different shapes. I'd come up with the same idea as Ben for the halftone effect but you've taken it a step further.
I've also been using CC Ball Action for making stipple shading effects in my work. It's procedural too of course but just goes to show how powerful AE can be without too many external plugins
@@leochida767 the CC Ball Action method that Ben showed (and also explained in a video by Joe on the Workbench channel) is my go-to method for circles since it's quite quick to make and also for the computer to render. However, I do also like the plugin M's Halftones sometimes since it saves several clicks and generates awesome results.
@@AndrewMarston oh interesting... will have to take a look at that plugin if I get another job that requires halftones to see how it compares to the current method. Much appreciated Andrew :)
I like to duplicate my layer and add s_halftone on the duplicated layer then play with the toggled switches and tone down the opacity. It preserves the color and doesn’t look too all in your face. I’m afraid it requires the sapphire plugin though.
The amount of detail you delve into is really helpful - things like how to fix the dots in the whitespace, things that the gaussian blur does that aren't exactly intuitive. It's wonderful to watch you problem solve in order to achieve the look you want. Thank you, for this and so many of your other videos.
Greatest fasters tutorial ever! Oh how I love how you put emphasis on naming layers. How many times I find tutorials on here and they're named Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 2 copy, etc etc etc. BRAVO senor!
Excellent as always Ben, I especially love tutorials for adding a style to something pre-existing.
Another simple but brilliant tutorial from Ben. So much useful content in five minutes!
I love this! you really know how to share you knowledge in an agile and practical manner. You’re the best
Awesome tutorial Ben! ❤ Big congrats for your entire work on the channel!
Elegant and clever as always, thanks Ben!
Killing it man! Smooth and easy, thanks for the knowledge 🙏
Rad Ben! Great thought-process behind this effect, been able to do this easily enough on still imagery but I really love this take on the motion version.
I've just watched the 2D smoke tutorial and now this one. The use of levels on top of blur is really powerful, a real eye opener abou how creative one can get with basic effect to create advanced ones. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yeah it's a combo I use all the time. :D such a good pair
i learn so much from you and i really appreciate you, such brilliant ben! cant wait to give it a try ahhhh
dude !! i just needed this. your timing is sublime
excellent tutorial, fast and straight to the point and so cool! thanks for sharing!!
That's a really nice effect! I'll be giving that one a go!
Awesome! More and more I discover how much potential blur + levels have to create and manipulate images.
Love this! Thank you Ben.
You are the other half to my tone Ben 🧡 much love from Canada bro🤟
Wow. This is amazing. I have tried the halftone effect using thousands of custom shape layers all using the sampleImage() expression. Your way saves my computer from burning down my house
The animation sorcerer strikes yet again!! Great stuff as always Ben:)
You're just awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your skills!
If you precomped this, you could use it as a track matte on a regular layer to preserve color.
Can you lay this out in a bit more detail? Would love a halftone effect but want to keep color!
SAME^^^
could you show us please?
@@Pyromancers
It's pretty straightforward. First follow the steps in Ben Marriot's video to produce the half-tone print video.
Create a new composition with the original video in full colour on the bottom layer, and the half-tone directly on top of it. Make sure you can view the track-matte layer options in the layers panel (right click on the toolbar and enable 'modes').
On the colour video layer, from the track-matte dropdown menu select 'Alpha Matte Inverted'. This basically uses the layer above as a mask, where black = visible, and white = not visible. Voila, the effect is now in colour. There are lots of video tutorials on using track-mattes if this is hard to follow.
I suspect that applying a small amount of gaussian blur to the colour video layer would help with the effect (depending on the type of content). Hope that helps.
@@eamonnbeahan5611 u could also just put the footage on top of the b & w halftone and set the blending mode to color
This is utterly fantastic!
That is the best intro I've ever seen that comes WITH USEFUL VIDEO?!?? Love it xoxo
Just what i needed. Thank you so much!
You are a master man. thank you so much!!
So quick and easy. Really useful, smashed the like :D
Thanks for sharing this Ben. Just what's needed for a current project in need of a quick bit of comic book look development.
Ay very cool and remarkably easy to set up. Great tip thank you
This is an awesome effect. I'll probably use this for stills too.
I found lots of tricks and tips for me in this tutorial ... you are awesome Ben ... THank you for sharing :)
Man never tought about the camera lens blur when I tried to do something similar, you are a genious ty so mucho
Right?! Camera lens blur hiding away down there. Thanks so much my friend :D
love you ben, you are my inspiration everyday : )
I love you Ronaldo! Thanks for all the support :)
Amazing effect! Thank you!
Thank you so much Ben!
Thank you, Ben! Great tutor!
thanks for this great tut. really helpful! :D
Hey, clever way to do it, Ben!
😲I was happy with the first bit of dot work but really appreciated the extra touches. Now I want a project to try it on!
You're freaking AWESOME man!!
Wow thanks I can apply this to my future projects
you are amasing. thanks for sharing the project.
Amazing tutorial!
Oh, Ben. You're just a genius.
Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos Ben !

Amazing, thanks!
You're amazing! that you much for this!
Nice! Very helpful! Thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN, YOU ARE AN ANGEL
really not lying. I’ve been finding this one until now!!!!!!!!Maybe it’s fate 😃 thank u
Thank you so much! this really help me!! c:
Fabolous, Thanks!
I love your work
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! thx so much, looked for that effect quite a while ;)
Thank you so much!!
So good!
Thank you!
ben ben ben, you are a wizard!!
Haha, thank youuu!
Now this is why sometimes I wish Photoshop had more effects where we could pull information from other layers. We've had 'displacement map' and 'apply image' for years, but I feel there's more room for effects like this one you showed.
great video thanks!
you are the best!
I really like it. 👍
amazing
Thanks!
Oh boy, that’s dope
Thanks mate!
Amazing as usual! From there you could separete 4 versions of your main comp, extracting the CMYK channels from them, and later composing them with a bit on a wiggle to create a color print effect, close to that previous vid you did using the photoshop actions!
Cool effect Ben.....keep up the good work... These small effects are added to our dictionary the next time we need something like this ...
Thanks, glad you found this one useful :D
@@BenMarriott surely helpful... I liked the glitch you made for jerrymelord.... That was so awesome that I couldn't even replicate the same type of glitch... I tried almost 6 times 😂
Good job 👍
awesome!
To the people reading this: have a good day/night and stay safe during these hard times
Man that’s so awesome you’re the best!!!!!!!!
You're the best! :D
Ben Marriott no you are😂
TL&DR: Scale the Dots Layer up a bit;
Just have to be careful when Wiggling the position of CC Ball Action;
Since Solids are the size of the Comp, I recommend scaling the Dots Layer up before messing with their position because it creates lines without halftones at the edges (you can even see it in the video at 4:09 in the right and at 4:13 in the left, for example).
@Edit: love your videos, Ben; for realz, you taught me like 60% of what I know about AE
"Ball Action" sounds unnecessarily dirty 😳 lol
I was looking for something like that just a few days ago, thanks for making this :D
Amazing! Hope this isn't too late :D
@@BenMarriott It isn't :D I really appreciate your tutorials man, you went into so much more detail, with the little tweaks at the end, than any other tutorial I found. Thanks again !
I was looking for exactly this. You're a saviour! XD
Thank you
Amazing
woww, thank for sharing
Good tutorial
Why u so talented😬
Thanks. Buddy
thank you👏
Thank you for watching :D
Ben you beauty
Hey there thank you so much for making this! I was wondering if you had a good idea of how to do this with colors other than black. Interested in layering colors on video the way I do when I print. Was imagining having each color be on a different video track. Thanks!
Adobe be like:
Halftone in Illustrator? Yes
In Photoshop? Yes
In After Effects? Hell no! Let's make it hard for beginners.
Thanks Ben, really awesome as always! Thank you for solving this!
Thanks :)
You're welcome Felix!
thaaaank youuuuuuuu🙏
Ben, incredible 🖤⚫⚫⚪⚪
Great, thank you man.
Why would anyone dislike this video?? 😂
Damn, u good man
So I was wondering if you can make the grid of the dots change angles. And apparently you can just rotate the 'dots' layer for that. However, this makes it not cover your whole screen, so you need to enlarge it, which stretches the dots. The best way to go about it is to just make a big enough shape to cover the whole screen while still being a rotated shape (in my case 45 degrees).
Thanks Ben, for putting this tutorial up!
You make magic with the levels effect 😂
Thanks buddy! :D
GREAT
the crazy dedsec animations now make more sense.
blessed
You're the new Andrew Kramer!!
What if we want to add CMYK color effect, like you did on the other tutorial with the photoshop action? can we do that on After Effects? Great tutorial by the way!
