- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- From Goldeneye 007 to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare via Stargate SG-1, the FN P90 has cemented itself as one of the most iconic SMGs in pop culture. With the help of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, we break down what makes this unique PDW so iconic, and why games have embraced this weird little SMG.
In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson to chat about one of pop culture’s most iconic submachine guns, the P90.

The SG-1 reference in the video is so nice. Love that the comments section is full with comments about the show. So many epic memories.
One of my Favourite lines in any show was; the Jaffa staff is a weapon of terror, the P90 is a weapon of war.
I was just about to comment this. :-) great scene.
SG-1 is full of amazing lines! Glad to see someone pointed it out!!
@footingguzthaiusa3871 Maybe don't post run on sentences with no bearing to the original comment?
That one is a classic.
Oh yea ! 👍 Somehow it took me ages to realize, that most of the human weapon systems are far superior to the goa'uld's...its because their behavior, armors and weapons and last but not least, voices are intimidating...but they get bushwacked by human weapons all the time...at least in close quarter combat...the goa'uld have space ships and teleportation and their hand thingys with healing capabilities...so they have that 😅
I suppose the closest thing to what Dave’s talking about at 6:50 is the creatively named AR-57, which uses P90 magazines on an AR-15 compatible upper. Means less re-training for those already familiar with AR-10/15 derived platforms. Which has made its way into some video games, notably the COD MW reboots, although that didn’t save the company that created it.
I dont think that is mechanically possible unless you modify the ar so extensively you are going to have to retrain everybody anyway ( the gas mechanism for the ar is on the top of the bolt and the trigger mechanism comes up from the bottom )
@@woltews Nope, there is an AR called the AR-57.uses a stock lower and a special upper. It's pretty sweet.
True. That aside, the only other "magazine on top" gun that I can think of that's even vaguely similar is the HK G11.
@@chris.3711 ah it has 0 parts compatibility with a true AR and therefor you are retraining your troops
@@woltews this comment wasn’t hypothetical, it’s a real product that was made
I first saw the P90 in SG-1 as a kid like so many others apparently, and I was surprised when I found out it was a real-world gun. I originally thought it was just a fictional prop for the show because it looked so sci-fi. I've been excited when it and weapons inspired by it have appeared in any games and movies. I had a period where I got into casual airsoft with my friends, and I mainly ran an automatic electric P90 where the magazine was a hopper that held an insane amount of BBs. My friends actually thought it was unfair because most of them used M4s and things with conventional magazines and had to reload while I kept spraying lol. Downside was when it got somewhat low on BS it would feed a lot less reliably.
My fav SMG hands down ….. mostly thanks to SG1
Yoooooo!
Yooooooo!
Same here
Its not even an smg
I'm rewatching SG1 at the moment and one thing that stuck me is how long it takes for them to get their P90s.
I thought they got them season 2 but they actually get them almost halfway through season 4.
The P90 became one of my favorite guns after playing GoldenEye and later Battlefield 3.
I like all the packed-in bullets the p90 has, looks very neat. Also more bullets equals more shooty per cartridge
*shooty per magazine. A cartridge is a single bullet, powder, and casing.
@@Very_Nice_and_Polite_Person ah my bad, thanks
bro seeing the clips from stargate in here was the dose of serotonin i needed at 3:00am
Love P90 been using it since Jagged Alliance 2
Gta tbogt was my favourite p90 and the first p90 I ever saw, it became my favourite smg, along with the MP5SD
I'm a simple stargate fan. I see P90, I watch video.
First time i saw it was Stargate sg1 when the chick was demonstrating it to the aliens and that's when i decided it was my favourite weapon of all time.
For games like CS:GO the short barrel, based on hand position, makes it great to hide around the corner, without giving away your position.
I have always loved the P90, wish I could own one
And made in Belgium ! Fn Herstal love
Yet another iconic weapon from FN Herstal in Belgium, Along with the SCAR, FAL, the FiveseveN pistol,Minimi (M249SAW0
Being the workplace of John Moses Browning for he longest time
Crazy to think all these “space age” looking weapons that were all pretty new around the time I was a kid are now roughly 30 years old at least xD
Slightly disappointed there wasn't a reference and meltdown to FarCry 1's P90 sharing ammo with the MP5SD.
That's a bit of artistic licence in that game. It makes the P90 extremely effective there while the MP5SD is far less so.
Hey, he actually got the name right! It doesn't actually come from 'Project 1990' like a lot of people think. It's a project number internal to FN. They had the name down early in production- obviously there's no way they would have known what year the project would be completed.
One of the things that really kept this weapon from widespread adoption IRL is Germany blocking NATO from official declaring the P90 and the 5.7×28mm round the winner of its PDW contract. Now that Germany has gotten out of the way, other ammo and weapon makers are looking at the projectile. Working to improve it and release their own systems that utilize it. I wouldn't be surprised if FN releases an updated version of the P90 in a few years.
The problem with the p90 and the five seven pistol is that the price of the ammunition is very high. 500 rounds cost you around 400$ while 1000 rounds of 9mm cost less than 300$
11:47 tell that to Teal'c in the later seasons of SG1
The reason why rainbow 6 siege operators might had taped the p90 magazine was to conceal amount of rounds left, to reduce tactical information provided to enemies. Whether that was what the developers was trying to portray though is a separate issue haha.
I didn't feel Dave gave a lot of space to Jonathan Ferguson here. It seems he wanted to talk about the niche origin/purpose and maybe other things.
Llenn and P-Chan would be proud:D
One of the coolest and most iconic weapons of all time, it’s still my favourite weapon in the new Call of Duty
11:28 I would think that honor goes to the MP7. Plenty of SWAT/special police use them, the US tier 1&2 forces and seen limited use of it, and I’ve seen armed police use them in London, also German issues them in a limited role.
Back in CS 1, I used to call this gun the chocolate bar lol
I take it that Teal'c is going to be making an appearance in the akimbo episode?
no mention of it playing a key role in the final battle of Ghost in the Shell 😢😢
Inside you there are two SMGs fighting. One is the MP5, the other is the P90.
Steyr AUG should be next up for this series or try bolt action weapon like lee enfield rifle?
I just like the top reload
Could we imagine this video having an XboxAhoy voice cameo with the gun expert
9 out of 10 times in a game you die because you had to reload.
Because while you reload you can not defend yourself by shooting back.
So more rounds mean less reloading means a better survival rate.
This brings back so awesome memories from Counter-Strike back in the day. But that graphic/game-engine in Goldeneye was just hideous 🤣
I mean, if you're gonna have Jonathan on this, maybe just let him talk?
huge mag & bullet per minute, definitely thats all i know from cs
The only drawback to the p90 and I mean the ONLY drawback (imo) is the price of the ammo.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the ammo issue in goldeneye yet. Apparently they were working in Hexadecimal and when they put the 50 in for the ammo, it came out as 80 instead. I’m not sure if they ever realised their mistake or just thought it was too funny to change but that’s why it had such a whopper of a magazine size.
I never even gave a single braincell to think about how the P90 ejects rounds lol
NEVER thought to look at the bottom of the gun even in VR games
In one SG-1 episode they have their clones/robot doubles doing missions and you see them going through the Stargate and i thought "Hey, why are they carrying MP5s again?". It made sense because the robots didnt have the newer P90s and was so happy they put the detail into the show.
My gf and i are rewatching the whole SG-1 series right now and im glad it still holds up.
I never realized that. Good catch.
That show other than the CGI ages like fine wine
I said "they filmed this one out of order and didn't think we'd notice the old guns? Sloppy sloppy" during my rewatch a few days ago. Silly me.
@@blarg35 even the cg is perfectly god 99% of the time.
Sg-1 is the reason I love the p-90
Stargate SG-1 was my first taste of the P90 and I've loved it ever since.
First place I also did see the MP7 on screen that they had for a little while.
Same here. I also remember it from the Syphon Filter games on the first PlayStation back in the late 90's.
Jonathan Ferguson is becoming an icon. He needs a channel of his own

This series feels like a continuation of iconic arms, and I'm all for it
Would dare to outright call it a _successor_
Information-wise I agree, but for me Icon Arms' audio-visual presentation and style is slicker and more satisfying. No offense to Jonathan of course.
Just need Stuart 'Ahoy' Brown to appear in an episode
@@holykuhmeinefresse Without a question, stylisation of iconic arms is god-tier, but with an actual physical example for some of the guns, and an exploration of the weapon, it's a nice extra addition to go with iconic arms
@hecate1421 ohhh i wonder how ahoy is doing, his next video is an iconic arms episode i think
Whenever Jonathan talks about FN weapons not being adopted as standard service weapons I get the feeling he forgets the belgian armed forces exist. P90 is a widely used standard service weapon there and scar is now the main service rifle. You may add your belgium isn’t real comments now
I think what he mostly meant is that the gun was never adopted as standard service weapon by NATO.
You can also watch Ahoy's video about the P90. I think he covered the gun's history better...
Belgium is literally not a real country.
belgian armed forces aren't real
Belgium isn't real. It's just part of the Netherlands.
Sorry, is this a meme I don't know? Why is Belgium not a real country, despite, you know, being a real country?
to be honest it was not video games where i fell in love with this weapon it was its use in Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis.
BTW i like how in the opening part of this video they laterally use stargate footage and audio to describe the weapon.
I didn't even remember they didn't have the gun from the very start, I thought they just had it all along.
amen
Remember, the p90 is so famous it somehow found its way into splatoon of all games as the second splatoon’s hero shot. I repeat, this real gun made its way into a children’s game about shooting ink out of toys. What a legacy! Can’t say that about the ak or 1911.
I know, right? Splatoon consistently has the most creative fictional weapons design in video game history, and the fact that Agent 4 was given a yellow P90 speaks volumes to how iconic it is
Tbf, AK is probably considered a "scary" gun, due to it's bad association
"Children's game" is a bit of a stretch. Since the game features street culture and fashion so predominately, it looks to me like it's aimed at teens.
Maybe the design is weird enough to be included in the game and sorta blends in with other weird weapons.
AK is seen as a terrorist weapon
Not really a gun nut but when Stargate SG-1 was mentioned I had to watch this. And Jonathan Ferguson never disappoints. And now I'm looking forward to the akimbo episode because I do remember Teal'c dual wielding the P90 at least once.
it become what he did in later seasons.
Bruce Willis duel wields them in the movie "Looper"
@@mosh.4245 Yeah but i see that with the Jafa's better strength, dual wielding could work, whereas a normal human would have much more trouble with the recoil.
It boggles the mind that we never got a Stargate FPS , it would have been a perfect fit.
There was an MMO in development. But money ran out I believe. Stargate worlds.
Stargate timekeepers is in development . Turn based strategy.
Wasn't there Stargate resistance video game in the making?
Let's rephrase that a bit:
I'ts mind boggling we never got ANY decent Stargate game.
(aside from that "not so decent" jump'&'run on snes and genesis)
When was the last time a Stargate game _didn't_ get cancelled during development?
For such a popular IP it's almost cursed when it comes to spin offs or continuations. Even the potential series revival got canned last year when Amazon bought out MGM.
How has nobody mentioned the canceled Stargate SG-1: The Alliance? That was an FPS game being developed for PC, PS2, and Xbox. There's plenty of videos of it on UA-cam.
I wish this series would acknowledge the Metal Gear games more often. Solidus spinning a p90 like a pistol is such an indelible image
I came here to mention this specifically.
P90 really fits into that MGS2 aesthetics.
It was the first time I seen one
the Frog's in MGS4 also use them. It was my go to gun in that game once I found one. MGS4 was like pokemon with guns. I had to collect them all.
had to search it; that was a badass little spin
Stargate SG1 made this gun legendary ! 🤩
Yoooo!!! Facts!!!
GoldenEye64 did as well.

As a kid I loved the P90 in Counter strike, it looked so cool and was so sci-fi even down to its unique loading mechanism. I never thought of it as realistic or functional so my mind was blown researching into this piece and learning how actually it had loads of tactical advantages like the downward bullet ejection or the fact that keeping track of your rounds is easy. And apparently it doesn't jam much despite the wacky feed mechanism! Truly a marvel of engineering.
I fell in love with the looks and the easy correcting for recoil (straight up, slowly pull down and you're golden!) made the P90 my go to gun in many cases. My favorite SMG and it even radiates to the point where the 5-7 is my favorite pistol just because it uses the same ammo
@@YeeSoest In addition to all the other advantages, it seems to me that more police units should carry the P90 and 5-7 because there's less of a risk of stray bullets. The rounds, though (soft) armor-piercing, are lighter than typical 9mm pistol rounds, so they lose energy earlier, so they don't go as far in the event of a miss (though, being faster, they also keep a flatter trajectory longer, making them easier to aim). Although, I don't shoot much, so I guess people can take what I say with a grain of salt.
@@jeffbenton6183 it's probably a combo of 2 things.
1) cost p90s are fairly expensive, ARs are cheap in America.
2) it's my understanding also that once the police need to use something longer and packs more of punch, you might as well just get a rifle with an intermediate round, so logical just defaults to AR rifles, instead of weird "super" pistol rounds made to penatrate body armor (which isn't a concern for cops). But the biggest is probably reason #1.
Certainly the best interplanetary belgian export!
For such a small country (in size) it sure has a lot of iconic firearms from FN, the SCAR & the FAL
@@skeven0 Fabrique Nationale know what they're doing, it seems.
as a jokey sort of aside, I just kinda realised they're kinda caught between two worlds, French creativity and weirdness (as Ian said: The French copy no one and no one copies the french) and German efficiency and superlative design.
Fabrique Nationale has nothing to do with France.
@@MrKinir yep, but it is in the french speaking region of belgium,
@@MrKinir I know and understand that, but I figured they're a small nation of french speaking people sandwiched between France who is known for kooky weird but oddly functional designs and Germany who are known for robust if a mite complex engineering.
given the P90, and the other slightly odd but very solid, groundbreaking and popular firearms Fabrique Nationale has produced, I was thinking the environment might beget a mindset that might explain some of that.
of course, one should never forget the sheer creativity and technical genius+knowhow of the engineers there past and present (J. M. Browning comes to mind) but as I saw it, like many things, geography contributes more than you think to so many things.
When I was 13, my older brother took me to a shooting range that had a P90 available for rent, full-auto and everything. Everyone there was using handguns, so when we started shooting a fun-switch gun, everyone stopped for a moment to check it out. It was such a cool experience and it's been my favorite SMG/PDW ever since.
Surely a classic of industrial design, functionally and aesthetically.
Agreed, I recommend shooting it at least once in a lifetime. Love the recoil.
"love the recoil"
... Which is basically non-existent
There is a story being told that Stargate SG1 ended up buying so much blank and live ammunition that it was difficult for other owners of P90s to actually get ammunition, including law enforcement and military. In later season's they had to switch the characters to "other guns" for heavy shooting scenes cause they couldn't get blank ammo at all.
Silly armorer on set didn't think to save the brass and reload it? Tsk tsk.
As someone who owns a gun that shoots 5.7 ammo , getting ammo is the main reason the 5.7 hasn't exploded in popularity, at a dollar a round it is preeemo ammo compared to being able to get 50 rounds of 9mm for 15 dollars on when its on sale.
I think ammo availability had a big effect on what guns got showcased in Stargate SG1 and Atlantis in general...I've heard tell that another big reason why the P90 became the primary PDW or close-combat weapon in SG1 was that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq drove 9mm supply through the roof early on and the production team was struggling to get 9mm blank ammo...but there was a lot more 5.7mm available because of the smaller operational use of weapons firing that round.
@@generalilbis also, later on in the SG1 seasons and movies, Atlantis and Universe too, 5.56 based firearms became much more dominant. I'm betting it's because the AR shot up in popularity in the civilian crowd, the production of 5.56 was stabilizing as the war in Afghanistan carried on so it became easier and cheaper to use them. The G-36 was heavily featured throughout Atlantis and by the end of the show it was pretty much the common alternative to the P90. In Universe I can't even remember seeing the P90 at all.
@@chinabluewho I own an FN PS90, a Ruger 57 , and a 1911A1 chambered in 10mm Automatic . Being ahead of the curve is costly .
Hopefully the FiveSeven pistol is next, not only because of its infamous reputation (at the start) but because it was used by Tom Clancy's most revered operator from Third Echelon.
Never heard of it. I only know of the FiveSeven in Counter-Strike as it shares the same ammo with the P90
Pretty much most of Sam's weapons in the first few games were FN pieces
Man, because of Stargate SG1, every game I can use this PDW, I do so!
I love the P90, I feel in love with it when I went to Las Vegas and went to Battlefield Vegas. Purchasing their CSGO package and fired it full auto. I own the civilian version PS-90. It's such an iconic firearm.
It's so light and small. And the plastic outer honestly makes it feel like a toy.
But, I'm not crazy about the case ejection being right down my body...
SBR yours? Debating about barrel swap or saw down.
My introduction to the P90 was in Metal Gear Solid 2. Cool weapon. I use it a lot in GR Wildlands lol
It feels so odd yet so nice people talking, nonetheless positively, about Star Gate
Double-gunning the RC-P90 in Goldeneye was peak gaming.
The P90 is such a great looking gun. I absolutely love the scene in Stargate where Samantha Carter demos it and completely impresses the skeptical Jaffa. I love every scene where Samantha Carter demonstrates that she knows her stuff. Samantha Carter is one of the best scifi female role models out there. Up there with Ripley and Janeway.
Anyway, if I were ever to own a gun I would really like to own a civilian version of the P90.
I fell in love with the P90 from its appearance in the GoldenEye game and its use in Stargate SG-1 back in the 90s, and I've loved it ever since. It's one of the first guns I look for in a game when I start playing - I've even modded it into games like Fallout 4.
It’s kinda a disappointment in Payday 2
I almost bought one of these in real life just because it's cool and it's my favorite weapon in any FPS game. It was like $1,200 and I had the money but I passed up on it. It was sold shortly after and replaced by a Kriss Vector but I couldn't afford that one. That gun shop was crazy lol.
$1200 would have been a very good price for semi-auto version. The problem is the ammo is among the most expensive for any small calibre round. $1 per trigger pull at the range.
@racervortex That's another reason why I wouldn't go through with buying it. And I was a 20 year old in college and would have been broke afterwards lol.
I just bought a used ps90 with a red dot that looked brand new for $1,450. Brand new ones are pushing $1,800-$2,000
Man, this really made me wish we had more Star Gate video games. The setting is ripe for it. The closest we have are the X-com games.
Always called the p90 the wood chipper, because I thought the msg was a block of wood growing up
first time i saw it was in 007: agent under fire, then timesplitters 2
I was going to say "I know the P90 first for the Stargate series, not games."
I shed a tear, thank you for that.
"That is a weapon of terror, it is meant to intimidate the enemy, this, is a weapon of war, it is meant to kilk the enemy" Lieutenant General Jonathan J. O'Neill on the P90
he was still a Colonel at that point, he gets promoted to Brigadier in season 8 and doesnt go out with SG1 after that
Please don't kilk anyone
It’s also one of the few weapons where the official marketing material (specifically the official publicity video in the segment on low recoil) shows it being dual-wielded.
On a side note, I once prepared a document during my time in the Swedish Air Force recommending the P90 as a light, compact and more suitable personal weapon for those of us who spent our time in non-combat roles. It didn’t get accepted, alas - I maintain it would have made an excellent Kpist 02 - but they did eventually end up making the AK5 smaller.
If this entire video was just you guys talking over Stargate footage, I still would have enjoyed it
Love the stargate references/features! Definitely an iconic gun from both SG-1 and Atlantis. I also read (direct from co-creator Brad Wright) that they switched to the P90 for safety reasons as well as cinematic. Much safer for the talent/cast when it ejects downward since they really had fully functional ones loaded with blanks that they shot on screen. A shortage in blanks for the P90 caused by the war in Iraq(?) resulted in the “Carter special” where they made up/invented a gun chambered differently for her for a season to cut down on how many blanks they needed.
I was beginning to think they weren't going to mention SG-1. That show really made me love the P-90.
I fell in love with the P90 from Ghost in the Shell: Stand-alone Complex
Do a GTA IV weapons video.
The P90 is one of those guns that everyone knows because of it's silhouette. The name is also fairly distinct too which probably helps as well.
I remember when I first saw the RC-P90 in GoldenEye. I had no idea it was tied to a real world gun back then. I thought it was something the developers came up with because it would be fun to have in the game.
Did you see the RCP 120 in perfect dark?
Cue the later season shots of Christopher Judge (T'ealc on Stargate SG1 et al) just straight up beast-modeing those dual P-90s like their toys...

Using the Stargate spec lines was a perfect choice. You've earned my like in under 10 seconds, well done GameSpot!
The key thing about how it was introduced in SG1 was that it was so matter of fact - this is our tool of choice and why. At the same time Samantha Carter was wealding it in the same way that a surgeon wealds a knife.
it just has that distinct look you know?
I have shot this a lot. Just never drop the magazine in the sand, one grain of sand in the feeding mechanism renders it a brick. Also, the bolt is very prone to breaking in half. Not really a fan (and I’m Belgian).
There are actually two guns that I know that use that mag, AR-57 and an Keltec "pistol", funny enough Keltec also have a pretty cool bottom ejecting bullpup.
In the immortal words of AHOY. "Their's something alien about it."
IIRC, the SG-1 crew bought up so many of the P90's and the associated rounds that they created a shortage for militaries who were looking for the weapon.
These dudes didn't mention SCP:CB once... The P90 was an icon of SCP for years
Another neat thing about the P90: because it ejects shells out of the bottom it's completely ambidextrous. You can wield this gun both left and right handed with zero issue. I believe this was one of the reasons why FN went through all the effort to design that top loading magazine besides trying to make a gun with a high ammo capacity as compact as possible.
Another strange one: the Prowler from Apex Legends resembles the P90 is shape, but that's where the comparison ends. That gun is a burst firing SMG that sticks the magazines in the stock instead of the top, likely for animation reasons.
I was waiting to hear "Stargate SG1"
MGM had so many directions they could go in with regards to making games and every single game they were going to put out got abandoned in development.
They missed out not sowing the pimped out version of this gun in the original Army of 2. Diamond encrusted with a 4 foot long silencer that is so big it goes off the edge of the screen
