TRRS 363: Lake State Railway Alpena to Harrisville 2014

- Lake State Railroad's Huron Subdivision is the most remote railroad of Lower Michigan. Running along Lake Huron's shore, the line bores through the forest north from the Bay City area to the end of track in Alpena, Michigan
After decades of use by founder Detroit & Mackinac, the line was inherited by the Lake State Railroad in the 1990s. The line once hosted a full fleet of trains hauling passengers to forestry products, but now the only remaining customers are in the cement and concrete businesses.
Follow the regular weekday southbound, train #326 from its origin in Alpena to the halfway point at Harrisville at the historic station. Included are shots in Alpena, Ossineke, Black River, Alcona and Harrisville

Yep rolls past our place in Black river every night between 1900-1930 lol.
I got a cabin up in Harrisville love seeing the trains go by
The tracks have to be replaced.
Great video of the train, I heard Alpena is a really cool town, I live by Kalamazoo, MI and there are a lot of railroad tracks that run through. But yet again, great video. It looks like some areas of those railroad tracks need to build repaired.
dont say the last e in ossineke. loved the memories it brings i grew up about two blocks from the third street crossing. my great grandfather worked as a station agent in greenbush and onaway
I've heard it pronounced both ways...one of those places where people don't seem to agree on the name!
@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries Ive been going up there 35 yrs no one says the E
Seems like the area could use an extensive amount of track repair.
It was previously much worse, and they're always working on it these days to improve it.
Those are some rough rails.
In fact, it's a derailment waiting to happen since a train travelling at the right speed could sway with a frequency equal to the natural frequency of one or more of the cars, potentially swaying more and more until it tips over.
Swaying is heavily speed-dependant. I've run passenger trains at 30 mph with a smooth ride. Yet, a freight train over the same track at 10 (maximum authorized speed) rocked like crazy.
I'd be nervous as a fish riding either of those rails! Idk how the locomotives or cars stay on them without any misfortune.
the E on the end of ossineke isn't pronounced
15mph? Were you using a radar gun?? Look up the term ''Harmonic Rocking'' I've never seen this railroad's handbook but in the W&LE handbook it states that if a train can not sustain a speed of 23mph or greater, they must restrict to 10mph to avoid a derailment.
+Scott Taipale I can say this. The speed limit is 10 mph, 15 was mis-information from another source. Turns out, the tracks are good enough for 15, but a restriction is maintained at 10 to save on track degradation. I know what Harmonic Rocking is. I will say that I doubt just because the W&LE has such a rule that most/all railroads do. That is a bit of a logical stretch ;)
Nice video! Is 15mph the max speed for the line there? by the looks of it was just about that.
Actually it is 10, with some 5 mph orders
Thornapple River Rail Series Ah ok. I do a lot of Great Lakes Ship chasing but I do see some trains and I wanna get into trains a little bit more. How often do you get to catch trains in that area?
Boatwatching 14 About one week per summer. I was actually just up there last week. Train departs most weekdays south from Alpena between 5 and 6pm.
Seems like the line could use a little love don't talk think
There is a Lake State Railway train on the street in Alpena, Michigan. That was odd. Are you kidding me?
It is August 2018. Is the street running part of the line still in use ?
Yes it is
Good to hear.
Does LSRC even go to Alpena anymore?
Yes, not much has changed since this video
how that train ever stayed upright is beyond me. geez, tracks are awful.
5 :16 Jesus - are those some terrible tracks
The track looks very bad.
If you see this train a rockin don't come a knockin!
It’s time for some new track. No
Aw stinky
Or is it Aw sneaky?
