    Thanks for this informative filming about how much really goes on in the manufacuring of concrete. It's amazing the industry that chugs right along.

    It's nice to see clean power units! Seems like most companies think that they run better filthy. Good video! Thanks!

      Well, when they're fresh out of the paint shop, they are gonna be pretty nice. Without much speed or any sort of tunnels along the railroad, the power stays nice and clean on the Lake State

    I too, do a fair amount of chasing. The farthest I've gone was Brousseau Rd in Ossineke. But back in June 2014 I took a cab ride all the way from Alpena to Tawas City.

    Any idea how they get away with a lone crewman for this trip? I thought they had to have both the engineer and conductor. I also wanted to comment about your videos in general. They are really really well done. I enjoy your excellent camera work and the amount of background information you give in your narration. Keep them coming!

      +P Rack It's under the one-man crew FRA rules. Since there isn't any hazmat or for practicality's sake enroute switching, there is literally zero need for a second crewman. (except redundancy for safety)

      They might be having a conductor driving in a company car, pacing the train-- as I have seen that on the line from Pinconning to Grayling.@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries

    What were the dates of these scenes?

    Great video! I believe it's Greenbush. Not Rosebush.

      +John Grabiel That is correct. Despite repeated editing and review by multiple persons, that still slipped through!

      Rosebush is actually located 6 miles north of Mount Pleasant.

    Why do the locomotives give throttling up, then down, up then down?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  7 років тому

      The locomotives only have 9 power settings, idle and then notches one through eight. More or less one notch was too high, the other too low, to keep track speed.

      Thornapple River Rail Series Ok, I was just wondering because I live in oscoda, and the train goes past my house at about 10:30 pm, and it does what I said in my previous comment!

    Can you do a chase video of the north bound train from Bay City to East Tawas this year or sometime in the near future, I would really like to see that as I do not know much about how this line operates and how often it is used, I am interested because I vacation in East Tawas a lot(a beautiful town) and I see the tracks in the middle of town but never see any trains on them.

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  7 років тому

      Probably not in the cards this summer, unfortunately.

      Thornapple River Rail Series ok thanks anyways. Btw back when you first posted this video just a few months ago on July 31 2015 someone posted a video of a south bound lake state train passing through East Tawas in the early morning around 9 am by the looks of the lighting, and it was a pretty long train, how rare is it for a lake state southbound train to pass through East Tawas in the morning because I always though the train passed through the town southbound at night?

    "And yet from here to Harrisville the tracks are straight with no grades to speak of."
    I'm sorry but the Green Bay & Western was doing 50 mph on their mainline when they were LOSING money towards the end of their existence. LSRC needs some badly needed track renovation even today.

      Not really. Increased speed on this line wouldn't help their bottom line. As long as they can do 15 and don't derail at all they'll do just fine. They'd have to get the line up to 30 in order to see any cost savings, because that would halve the number of crews involved. Because that'd be very expensive, and the rock and cement are just fine in taking a day to get from Alpena to Bay City, there is no need for increased speeds.

    the engine's look great, sound great, but a lot of the cars need a new facelift. ( paint job, badly)

    Actually, this railroad is well maintained to the standard that is required. I would not run an Amtrak train on it, but it looks better than some shortlines I have seen?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  6 років тому +2

      It's much better than it was, and in fact these days they're moving forward with more ties, more ballast and even starting on a long-term plan to replace all the rail on the line!

    Great informative video. Sometimes the Engineer gives 2 longs, 1 short, & 1 long, on his horns, at the crossings BUT NOT ALWAYS. I thought that was supposed to be the signal at all crossings!!!

      Supposed to be, but it isn't super-closely adhered to, especially when there are railfans around. The general public just needs enough warning.
