I was born and raised in Philly. Left temporarily when I was 14, left for good when I was 17. I'm almost 50 know and I live in L.A. The city has changed so much over the years. Kensington has always been sketchy but now the whole city is like this. So sad what happened to my city.
I'm in my 50's ..so a way back story. My Auntie would take me shopping for school clothes all over Philadelphia... no taxes on clothing back then. It was a beautiful and busy city. We would spend the weekend even though we were only 40 miles away from home. One of my favorite memories.
Wow its like a movie set. Driving down a tight compact road with many house connected eachother. Prolly hear when each one flushes the toilet . No privacy. Makes me even more thankful to live in the back country whr i do.
I was bruised and battered, I couldn't tell what I felt I was unrecognizable to myself I saw my reflection in a window, I didn't know my own face Oh brother, are you gonna leave me wastin' away On the Streets of Philadelphia?
European here, been in Kensington a few times.... for us, that is like a war zone.... i know nothing here to compare it to North Philly, not even the suburbs of Paris can beat that..
What does the mayor have to do with this. If no taxes come into an area, no money is allocated to the area. People need to move to the jobs, not sit around waiting to be offered the job.
It's Not The Mayor It's The parents you have to start prosecuting parents for the children's Behavior don't blame him it's not his child out here acting like a fool

I don't think anyone really wants to live like that. I think they're so beaten down that they've given up and that's incredibly sad because it's obvious that those who could do something about it have given up on the people living there.
No. They are not. And either way as bad as it looks this is not Afghanistan or Iraq. The rule of law is without question. In America you hit anyone or rob them or anything like that you will be arrested They know they don't want to go to jail or prison where life is 10000x worse than even these streets
This is just a part of the city. But what happened to Philly is the same thing that happened to Cleveland: when the factories left it was a disaster for working class people.

What's most shocking to me is the amount of nice, new and expensive cars lining the streets. They can't ALL be visitors. How do they do it?
I see a bunch of people loitering the streets but not a single one with a broom to clean up the garbage! Amazing.
Lol you think people are cleaning the streets for fun?
That's what you took from this?

Doe wintertime clear the streets? When the snow and wind hit and the temp drops into the 30's
What's the answer to this?
It’s crazy cause Philly look like somewhere overseas or some out a world ending movie
The beginning was in slow motion, right?
Yes it was slowed down
Grew up in NYC, lived in Boston and never saw anything close to this. How did it get to this point in Philadelphia? I am really asking.
Complacency ??
Poverty
Deindustrialization.
And not far from this it's nothing like this.

No dumpster to put the trash in maybe?

This is only a small section of Philly. Most of the city is very nice. I worked there for many years with no problems.
Philly got some bad potholes

The nicest part of the areas is the graffiti! At least it shows some effort.

That place needs to be cleaned out cleaned up as well
why they got nice cars and ratty homes? and no brooms?

I wouldn't roll down that street with anything less then a highly trained 4 man assault team kitted up for Fallujah.
