Hunted by Police on Evil Edwardian Streets

- Only a desperate man would walk the streets of Edwardian Britain at night. But there were plenty of homeless and jobless who had no choice. Find out how the dangers you could face alone on the streets didn't just include mugging from a thug for the little money you had, but the Police too - for strict vagrancy laws meant that you would be hounded from street to street, never finding five minutes sleep in a doorway, unless you chose to resist - but then your 'night out' on the streets would become a 'night in' - but a night locked up in prison!

I worked as a security guard at a restaurant on a bad part of town years ago. I was ordered to send away a homeless person that was loitering at my post there during a cold night. He was trying to journey to the city's homeless shelter to spend the night but he didn't have any money for a bus fair and it was too far to walk in the bitter cold weather that night. I felt really bad and asked the manager if I bought him some food, if he could stay until my shift ended which was only two hours from that moment. He said yes. Afterward I gave him a ride to the shelter which was only about a fifteen minute trip and was in the direction I had to take on my way home. The dude literally cried after a I dropped him off. He said he's never been shown such generosity in many years. I still think about him time to time and I hope he's doing better, wherever he is right now.
That was so kind of you. I never know when I see beggars on the streets if they are really genuine or faking it, that’s the trouble. I don’t want to give money to the fakes.
@@arriesone1 I give not knowing whether they’re genuine or not but my conscience feels better for it .
@@goldiegirl7247 Then are you helping or enabling?
Bless you
@@MrCrowebobbyThe consensus is that most homeless people suffer from some sort of severe and debilitating mental illness such as schizophrenia. Close family members to these unfortunate folk are either unable or unwilling to care for them, thus they're left to fend for themselves. Sure there are panhandlers that scam or are addicts but I'm willing to part with a few dollars in the off chance the person i'm gifting it to really does need it.
Cold, hungry, homeless, jobless ... none of this is good ... not then & not now
This is one of the most distinctive voices that I've heard since Burton, Olivier, Wells and Price and the setting it casts is truly ominous. Great upload as always !
It's so nice you enjoy listening. Thank you! The aim is to bring life to the past.
@@FactFeast Thanks for you reply it's appreciated
The Fact Feast voice. It is the best for these harrowing stories.
Yes, he's very good. Especially with these victorian videos, he does a great job of making things a bit intimidating. Really good reads.
A fine storyteller , with a voice I love to hear . He fires your imagination like a old time radio show .
When you look at the cost of living crisis and the social housing (or lack thereof) situation, things don't seem to have changed a great deal. Veterans on the streets, NHS waiting lists etc....
Great upload! Thanks 👍🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed this! Thank you.
You have an amazing voice really enjoy the way you present these poor people's souls.
I am a life long anglophile and love to hear and read stories from Great Britain.
Greetings from Connecticut USA
Glad you enjoy the narration! Thank you.
I can't help but wonder how bad prison must have been, given what they were willing to endure to avoid it. Would love an episode on prison-life.
Definitely a topic of interest. Thank you!
Not sure if prisoners received regular meals yet, unless provided by family members.
At least I have found in my travels that unless you are a woman an elderly or a child you will find no pity from anybody in any situation you find yourself in. stay warm my friends
the living conditions make me sad and mad. Nothing has changed. The Haves still lord it over the have-nots. Human nature never changes.
Oh go away! I'm a working class pensioner and I give thanks everyday for the privileges I enjoy. I have a safe Housing Association home. Free travel. I get help with my winter bills and have plenty to eat. Yes I am at the " Poor" end of the spectrum, but do not envy those who have more. I count my blessings and make the most of my life.
Oh that's interesting my nan was born in 1910 and her father was a Kent policeman at that time. He became a police inspector and ended up as a private detective.
🎉🎉😍🎉🥳 I was waiting for you !
Great! Hope it was good watching.

@@FactFeast Your content is superior, sir
Great channel, I wonder how many of these poor chaps where sent over the top in 1914? God bless thier souls RIP, to hell for those that inflicted this.
Thank you! Glad you find the history interesting.
I wonder what the equivalent of a 4 penny coffin would cost these days As someone who spent some years on the streets and came back from it I am often thankful yet curious In comparing conditions from Past days to current thank you again for the good content I plan to go through and check out all the videos as soon as I can
I hope you enjoy what you find. There’s lots more to come as well!
Fantastic narration.😍
Thank you! 🙂
A distant ancestor on my mother's side was somewhat disabled so would deliberately make mischief so that he could spend the late Fall through the early Spring in a nice warm jail cell. He would be there for shoplifting, trespassing, being a public nuisance, etc. so that his needs could be taken care of for the 4 - 6 months that he was unable to work. Luckily there were no 3 strikes rules back then🤣🤣
I am so grateful for my home and the amenities I have. I’m grateful for my next meal, the one I had before and every meal I will ever eat. I am grateful for the money I have, even though I may only have a few dollars and pennies, I’m grateful.
Me too!
I remember we had a knocker up living on our street. She was also a money lender to the worse of. She uses her bit of power over the people she lent to. 😡☘️
Thank you so much! ❤
You're welcome 😊 Thank you for writing.
Interesting that police still hound the easy targets today
Wow. That title sent a little shiver of dread up my back! And of course the video was absolutely fascinating. As always.

One of your very best narrations. Tremendous voice work!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you so much Lana!
Have we progressed? Everywhere you go there's rough sleepers a very large percentage of whom served in the armed forces
Nothing ever changes
Unfortunately you are correct. It’s heartbreaking that anyone has to endure life on the streets and is criminal that as you say a very large percentage are veterans thrown onto the scrap heap after doing our governments bidding fighting their phoney wars. What makes it even more heartless is that nowadays in hotels all over the Uk, migrants turning up daily in dinghies from war torn France are housed in these hotels and are given food, warmth, shelter, clothes a phone, money, cigarettes while our own homeless are on their own and given absolutely nothing except for what a passing stranger may give them. They can suffer all kinds of violence on those mean streets. I can’t tell you the number of homeless I’ve spoken to who’ve been kicked, beaten and been used as a urinal while trying to get a moments sleep .😢
@@goldiegirl7247 I lived in London for 30 years and remember the council's used to hose people with water especially Westminster
I know how it is for these poor people and it angers me too but if I said that then my comment would be deleted
People need to wake up and grow some
It's easy to stop it we just stand up and say no compliance with anything and bring the system down
Then we start deporting at the end of a gun if necessary
You're voice lulls me too sleep, I could listen to you endlessly! Are you on librivox at all?

Remember Robert Peel's other contribution to posterity was that he wrote the Tory Manifesto. Paternalistic class prejudice was built into the force (and all forces modelled on it) from it's inception.
The net effect of police vis crime is neutral. While there are no more highwaymen other crimes have been created (on BOTh sides since there has to be a law against it first, looking at you Florida) so the total stays the same.
poor souls.. They have peace now
This makes me feel so blessed , of what I have.
There was England in 1910, pretty much still sitting on top of the world as the preeminent power. The situation at home seems like a winnowing of the men who would be of military age. Those strong enough to survive the conditions shown here, and desperate for money, would be packing the recruiting stations in less than 5 years. There big money has it, the cannon fodder....
Great comment, I am very curiuos about this. Was WW I used to avoid revoultion? The rich seem to be heartless enough.
@@paulkonrad7754 Indeed they are heartless. It seems to me that the people who came into power during the 19th century ginned up these two great wars in order to maximize profits. Great wealth afforded them great power, and now we have what we have today, with them trying to put tyranny in the clinch.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thanks *Fact Feast* these facts are a feast & that's a ... fact
I like your play on words Miji. Thank you!
@@FactFeast You are welcome ... maybe I'll say it again & again till you tire if it!
Can you talk about how this night from 1910 progressed to 1950? I don't get how the poverty was reversed (or somewhat reversed) in that 40 year time span. The years seem world apart, but it's all within one person's lifetime.

I agree that this is read with commendable theatricality. It is pure bolshevism though.
Strangely, the Katyn massacre is rarely recounted and has no Itzhak on a soundtrack.
But his country wants him when war breaks out.
Then as today most wealthy people would sooner set money on fire than give it to someone in need.
Virtually all of those people at least made airs of being Christians. It's a shame that Jesus fellow never said anything to his flock about treating the less fortunate with kindness.
Aqualung comes to mind.
Damn, some things have not changed.
I understand how a bit of wire, old key, pen, knife, and such could be used as tools for burglary, but I don’t understand the candle stubs getting someone thrown into prison. Can anyone shed some light on this for me (pun intended lol. 🕯️ )
