  • We all have blinders. We can only see things from our own perspective. But when we come together with a common cause or a shared vision, our view broadens and we're able to recognize things that we never could've seen on our own. That's why the best companies are diverse: they have diverse thinking.

    It is racist to think that the all white board room has 1 perspective. People of different ethnicities are more similar than different. I'd really hate if someone said all Indians think the same. No, there can be a conservative Indian, a liberal Indian, a rich Indian, a poor Indian, a lazy Indian. We don't need anyone from sub-saharan africa to tell us what to think. Perspective transcends the physical. You cannot reasonably assume you know what someone thinks, you have to ask them. Furthermore, you cannot know what a person is truly like until you interact with them. A person's qualities are not determined by attributes but by experience.

      It's very possible that someone is skilled in an area, but is learning of a problem in a new position for the first time. • @the8u9

    Diversity hiring and inclusion used to be something tactical and strategic. Something to do to get an edge on your competition. When that devolved into what one might call, political nepotism, that's when the terms lost all meaning. Also, when people grew so entitled to everything that nothing should ever exclude anyone, problems happened. Some things, some products aren't for some people, but... no, we have to make that equal(ly bland) too.

    • @the8u9
      @the8u9 3 роки тому +2

      @Forest Pandit well if you need a language specialist or insight into a certain market, they are technically experts and not bad students. Hence the value. BUT if you're not diversity hiring for a rational business-centric reason, well...

    • @the8u9
      @the8u9 3 роки тому +4

      @Forest Pandit i guess it depends on your definition of it. But if by diversity hire, we mean hiring based on your diverse background for business reasons, then it's ok. But if it is ONLY because of the diverse background, then... that's not really meritocracy.

    • @the8u9
      @the8u9 3 роки тому

      @Forest Pandit no no thats a very american notion on our part. In homogeneous countries like Japan, you have to actively diversity hire because 99% of your applicants are your countryfolk. In the USA, maybe and even then hiring an Asian American wouldn't cut it, you'd have to import someone if you want market/cultural expertise.

    • @the8u9
      @the8u9 3 роки тому

      @Forest Pandit It seems like you have a bone to pick against the concept of diversity hiring and refuse to acknowledge any hypothetical instance where it may be valid. If you won't even give the bare minimum courtesy of refuting my claims by properly referencing what I wrote, then you might as well go talk to a wall in your room.
      Otherwise, you can explain to me how a company is going to fill a role for localizing their product well in Kentucky from Hokkaido without actively trying to find an American from the region. By my very specific definition of diversity hiring that i explained twice already, this is a valid hypothetical situation.

    • @ncamara670
      @ncamara670 2 роки тому

      Political nepotism, I wonder what that means. It I presume you are trying to suggest it's about giving a non white worker a chance because to some they are just a useless 'diversity hire'. As for the product development, increasing the focus on all potential consumers can actually bring more money into the company. Well, Oonly if they actually try to create something relevant for all groups they want and, yes, diversify the offering. If they don't bother and do one size fits all it is going to be pretty bland. But diversity is not a problem here, the attitude is.

    I always hade my issue with this glorified diversity of getting as many different nationalities and cultures together as you possibly can.
    My company prides itself with being "so diverse" and celebrating itself for having around 128 nations under one roof and so on and so forth.
    My experience with "diversity brings new ideas and perspectives" is that said diversity of cultures and nationalities brings tension, misunderstandings, distrust, anger and frustration into the workplace way more often then it brings all the glorious things that it is praised for.

    • @SarahDang-or7by

      then that sounds more like they aren't a CULTURE FIT. diversity isn't the problem. culture of the company and hiring is. Our employee engagement survey results for satisfaction have increased since doing that over the last two years!

    • @richatlarge462

      Bingo. Diversity is a weakness because of the tension introduced, once a threshold is reached. Moreover there is no diverse thinking going on, and there are no fresh ideas that work. There is only "give my group more". Companies promote this for two reasons: CEOs want to be viewed as progressive, and companies want to stay in good graces with government, which is run by the woke.

    I used to feel included in many places, felt like people around me valued intention of words rather than the words themselves. Now, thanks to "diversity" and "inclusion" i feel excluded because everything that used to be a shared bonded experience between multicultural people (because i am peruvian and we are all mix raced down here) are now censored and attacked. Even terms of endearment and brands that brought pride to us are now being censored because they dont fit the current diversity movement nowadays... Cause apparently intention and context dont matter to the rest of the world... From my point of view, we sacrificed diversity in the name of diversity and we sacrificed the inclusion of some in favor of the inclusion of others... I am not saying one group deserves it better or that one is more valid, but if i am to respect their values amd points of view even tho i consider them a bit on the extreme side... Why cant my values and points of view be respected?

In a free marketplace, companies have a natural incentive to be diverse, because it brings progress, but enforcing it is a terrible idea, because when it's enforced your ability to work with people who share the vision and the way is impaired. They're not there because they are wanted, because they're the best for the job or because they bring a new perspective, they're there to fill a quota. Companies must be allowed to choose their employees or partners absolutely freely, and let the natural course of business separate the wheat from the chaff

    2:45: This is probably the first and only perception i heard in years of diversity that actually made sense. Unfortunately in many cases diversity management is only inverse discrimination - for example hiring a less capable person for a position instead of a more capable one BECAUSE of some quota for sex/age/ethnicity or people with special needs.
    Of course a persons value to a team is to some extent determined if he has complementary skills, views and experiences to the people present.
    But as soon as you make this dependent from their sex/age/ethnicity you are doing identity politics. You are no longer seeing the person - only their quota attribute. You are discriminating while trying to fight discrimination.

      What he describes as "diversity and inclusion" is not even close to what is being forced on organizations today by woke ideologues. Diversity is defined along racial lines, which they then claim that it will bring diverse opinions. But if you want diverse opinions then you need to chase opinions and not races. Different races have no guarantee of producing diverse perspectives. Inclusion is just a way of forcing ideas and beliefs on people without them having a say in the matter in order to benefit some radical minority group or spoiled brats.

    Simon. When diversity of varied biases are brought under one roof to gain a wider perspective in a controlled environment, say an organisation. In a dynamic/ uncontrolled environment, say twitter, the diversity of perspectives lead to keyboard wars. So the mindset to accept multiple perspectives, with awareness of self bias becomes crucial for collective growth. But the question is, can't we simulate this acceptance-mindset of diverse bias + perspectives in a social media platform? Is it even possible to bring a harmony in the virtual social behaviour, in an uncontrolled environment?

    If only.
    Diversity of perspective and experience broadens the capacity for any team that works well together. It's worth having. It's worth seeking.
    But in business Diversity and Inclusion is just an insurance policy. It's the "I have a black friend," for companies. If you're a company you can't say, "We're not racist, we have black friends." But you can say, "We're not racist we have a robust Diversity in Inclusion program."
    Additionally, many companies will outsource their Diversity and Inclusion training without really vetting who they're hiring. They'll bring in people to teach, and enforce, identity politics. The company doesn't care about the results, they just need to be able to say they have D&I. That's why when a firm says they're going to start taking D&I more seriously you can feel dread sweep over the workplace.

    Old white men - 1 perspective - so they think the same because they belong to the same group? This is the ideology - that I can judge your thoughts, your beliefs, based on the group you belong too. What an abhorrent ideology.
    But of course there must be a shared set of values. Hurray for diversity in classifying and dividing people into groups, and uniformity of values to which all must conform.

    Problems and unhappiness aren’t unique to certain classes of people but from being at the either end of the central line I can say I’m far more better off knowing I don’t have to worry about how and what I’ll have to eat until next payday or if I can provide for my kid or even tolerating tooth pain for a couple years because 2000 dollars for dental work is a bit much. The poor have the same issues as the wealthy. Just with a few more personal subsistence issues. The whole work hard idea doesn’t make any sense when there’s no work. What, you mean start my own business, be more entrepreneurial? That’s not for everyone, not everyone can or wants to do that. Working for a corp now has shown me the gigantic disconnect between career people and hourly people. The gap can’t be bridged in peoples mind either. Why? I think it’s hard for people to really understand diversity and inclusion when they themselves are fully aware that they are in a position of privilege compared to the contingent workers they work alongside for example.
    People with the exact same education, people that work just as hard people that are just as involved getting warranty treated like second class citizens. But yeah, you can quit, you don’t have to live like that. But there will always be people who take your same subsistent position. So long as there is people in those positions you will always find the gap. My company doesn’t care. I don’t care. They’re ticking a social box unknowingly causing what will inevitably end up costing them what they didn’t want to happen.

Do you find this perspective aligns with your understanding or experiences? Discuss how varying socio-economic backgrounds might influence an individual's life skills and approach to facing challenges.

    A perspective coming from a multi-generationally mixed detribalized Indigenous & Spanish person from Mexico (born: East Oakland Ca.):
    It’s important to become more aware of what “diversity” & “inclusion” actually means in our society and the impact it can have on marginalized communities because to some it literally just means more forced assimilation. Consider specifically the “inclusion” part and ask: WHAT are we actually referring to when it comes to “inclusion” & WHY? And “diversity” for WHO and WHAT space? These words can feel invasive and can trigger heavy discomforts, especially for those who are reconnecting with their roots or Decolonizing. There’s knowledge and research as to why that is, but it’s a fairly new subject being discussed within abolition movements. This is one of the main reasons why I myself find it overwhelmingly difficult to apply myself to any field of work or creative arts space, it’s because of “diversity” & “inclusion” efforts, in a world where white supremacy is at it’s foundation… to me, “diversity” and “inclusion” just means more forced assimilation. It’s not an obvious thing to realize and it’s hard to acknowledge, we all have to unlearn and learn new things if we are to genuinely embrace community.
    And I think instead of saying “diversity” and “inclusion”, I feel more comfortable saying: to embrace community. Isn’t that the goal anyway?
