Exactly, how can the city even do that, someone who knows how should set up a petition, everybody who wants the park to stay, call Colorado’s state representatives and tell them you don’t want the park to go, the city shouldn’t be able to just take property that they don’t own.

Yea, and also give it some better rides. The mind eraser and boomerang are really fun, sidewinder and the drop tower are great. But I really hope they don’t remove the park forever, it would be amazing if they expand.

When the park moved there in 1995, the land was bought with city bonds. It will be the second time and a second location that they close Elitch Gardens which first opened its gates in 1890. I worked at the old park in 1989. I never liked the new park, it just didn't have the same feel as the old west Denver location.
My dad worked in the Games department from 1990 until the move, and then worked the whole first season at the new park in 1995. He was the games supervisor from 1992/1993-1995. He has told me many stories about the move and how the last four years at the original location were since I was born in 2000 and never got to visit the original. Its truly sad how they let it go during that time and then left what remained to rot until 1999. My dad never liked the new park much either. It definitely is nothing like the original, especially after Premier/Six Flags took ownership in 1997 and sold it in 2007. Even some of the rides that made the move are different now. I wish I had grown up with the original as it seemed to be something truly special to much of Denver and Colorado's residents. I hope they can relocate somewhere bigger where they can recapture some charm and stay around as Colorado's oldest amusement park.
Actually the comment about Elitch Garden’s originally opening in 1980 is false. Elitch Gardens has been a fully operational amusement, zoological and botanical park since really the year 1900. It originally actually opened as a zoological gardens in 1890, and in a different part of town (off of Tennyson). It was 1900 that they first brought in rides. Elitch Gardens would more than likely be relocated, and many locals such as myself, couldn’t be happier with that idea.
Demolishing the old Elitches and putting up this monstrosity was a horrible idea. I previously worked at this Eltiches and I am not sure they ever turned a profit. It has been sold many times. They don't own the land they are on and have to lease it from the city of Denver for around $250,000 a month. They told me the only thing they make money on is the parking. I remember at the end of the season they would throw everything in 4 huge dumpsters. All the prizes. all the candy, all the beer, all the soda, all the food, all of Subways food I couldn't believe it. Hundreds of pounds of still good meat and cheese. I filled my car up and the security guard told me to put everything back. You would think at the end of the season they would have just given it away as a public relations tool when the people were leaving. No way they have to throw it in the garbage. Greedy fools. I say good riddance! As far as the city of Denver goes. They will have that place out of there and demolished so quickly it will make your head spin.
0:43 A nice area that really encourages tourism? What's that theme park doing if not attracting tourists? Also, "affordable" housing is almost never truly affordable. Investors will buy the apartments in order to rent them out, and the value of the property skyrockets.
If relocated for Elitch 3, I'd pick a place along the foothills to use that geography for coaster height. I'd also have the "trilogy" of Mister Twister (rebuilt), Twister 2 (moved or rebuilt), and a new Twister 3! Keep Mind Eraser and build a mirror image coaster called Mind Restorer! Parking would be surface and garages.
Why are they always closing these parks just for stupid houses, that's the worst possible reason for closing theme parks. There was once an indoor theme park in Newcastle England called metroland, situated in the metrocenter shopping centre on the south banks of the River Tyne. They only had about 12 rides including just 1 coaster. But the park was so well themed that everyone who went there remembers it. I had a lot of fond memories going there as a 3 year old. But back then I was not really into theme parks. And I was terrified of roller coasters back then so I never got the chance to ride the coaster. So I just spent much of my time there hanging out on the train ride or the helicopter ride. The park first opened in February 1988 2 years after the shopping centre itself opened. And lasted for over 20 years. But then Newcastle City Council decided to convert the park into more shops, restaurants and a cinema. The locals were understandably not happy, but despite protests and a pertition that received over 5000 signatures the park did indeed end up closing down, operating for the last time on Sunday April 20th 2008. Closing forever at 8pm UK time that day. It is such a shame that metroland is gone and that this park may also be gone soon too.
I forgot to mention that all the rides were sold after the closure but the roller coaster remained in storage behind the newly opened cenima until 2015, when it was sold to the Big Sheep Adventure park down in Devon. Opening there in May 2016 under the new name of Rampage. The coaster still operates there to this day.
I actually work at Elitch's and I have heard whispers throughout the park amongst management during the 2018 season that they do have a new location set somewhere. Also, slight fact check, Elitch Gardens originally opened in 1890, not 1980. It used to be located closer to where Lakeside is now. It was moved Downtown for the 1995 season. The Old Elitch Theatre is still there as well as the carousel shell.
There is another option for the rides if Elitch Gardens close permanently and don't reopen at another spot. Some of the rides and coasters could go to nearby Lakeside Amusement Park, which is also in Denver.

Denver City Council: Hey people, i got a plan! Why don't we prevent people from having fun by demolishing a theme park, replacing it with something less interesting! Doesen't it sound like a plan?!
Lol I live in Seattle and will probably never visit this park (actually that could change. In 8 years I might fly to Denver to watch the Seahawks play the Broncos there). Visiting this park would be a nice addition. But I seriously feel bad for the people who have this as their home park. This sucks
FarFetched I love this place. I have season passes so during summer, I go every saturday or sunday. Nobody cares about some ugly walk and apartments. I really hope the city council drops this dumb project
This makes me feel sad, I love this place and I’ve always gone here, even since I was little. I hope the park stays because I don’t want to see my favorite place go away... 😔
Wet n Wild Las Vegas was a different situation. The lease was up and the landowner declined to allow the park to renew it. The new Wet n Wild, while using a similar name, it is a completely different company and brand.
Well that blows. First I live in Houston and they take away my Astroworld and now the closest coasters I have are in Denver and they are taking that away too. Bummer
Grew up with Eliches as my home park and I am personally not mad about this... would give Colorado a reason to build a new park that has actually good coasters in it... and don’t even start arguing with me that Minderaser and Boomerang are good coasters. Haha. Plenty of flat and open land outside of downtown Denver to develop on.
That's exactly what is going to happen. An abundant amount of serviceable land out there. Kroenke sports bought Elitch Gardens with that idea in mind. Hopefully we get some big rides because the amusement park game in this town is severely lacking. I went to Cedar Point this summer and the difference is night and day.
Astroworld was worse. At least Elich's owner (Stan Kroenke, who owns the LA Rams, Denver Nuggets and the Avalanche sports teams) has the money to move a few of the classic rides, and start fresh with cheap land by the airport. Astroworld was just razed, and the land just sitting there.
I hope we can get an actually good theme park I look at other states and wish we had a park like they have! I hope they get a large plot of land to work with.
Move it by Dicks out east. Add a giga and a strata coaster and maintain it! In Denver county I think that there's a height restriction in the building code. It has to do with blocking someone's view of the rocky mountains.? There for no hyper, giga, or strata is ever coming to this location. Even Mile High Stadium was built to a certain height for that reason. We have the room for a record breaking park!
When Elitch Gardens was still 6 Flags it was awesome. After it went under new management the park got worse and worse every year, its gross honestly, it feels so run down already. If you want to go have a good time at an older historical theme park go to Lakeside.
Since the same company that runs this manages Magic Springs in Arkansas, maybe some of those flat rides, the dark ride and that Half Pipe coaster could be relocated there. Magic Springs sadly could use it.
What I find funny is that Sidewinder (the Arrow shuttle loop) actually first opened at Magic Springs back in 1980 as Roaring Tornado then moved to Elitch Gardens in 1990. They could literally give them back their old ride! I just hope that Elitch Gardens gets to relocate in the future, rather than close forever.
The owners actually do have a say in the manner, because the company that bought the park a couple of years ago is the company proposing the redevelopment. They basically bought the park to eventually redevelop into a new (admittedly more profitable/valuable) housing/business center in downtown.
Actually it's good news because not only does Denver get new tall buildings and quite possibly more tallest buildings, elitches is being relocated which means new better rides. Right?
38th and Tennyson was the best spot. Had many a ride on mister twister and wildcat. I have since relocated to Kansas City. Got world's of fun down the street. But no thrills.
This news makes me so glad I moved away from Denver. Those new developments will be great for the rich that can afford the ridiculous cost, but for those regular families already barely able to get by in the suburbs will get nothing it of it. A theme park is something all family's can enjoy, so with it being replaced with such high cost businesses that is one less reason for regular families to stay in Denver. At this rate as soon as that development is finished it will be over run with homeless.
This is my home park and honestly im all for it being relocated...really the only appeal was being able to say we had an amusement park downtown...but with the airport being revamped and the new resort in that area the logical site for EG would be the airport area...just dont piss off Blucifer lol
Also it gives them room to expand which was a major problem currently as to why nothing could be added and the very reason why six flags gave it up so i say do a massive overhaul with the exception of twister 2 every roller coaster in the park is a clone....give the mile high a RMC...i mean its a complete slap in the face for there not to be any RMC's in the rocky mountains
@@mistamista8524 They are more likely to close forever than to get an RMC unfortunately. They really need to move out near DIA though, but they would have to bring over most of the rides because they wouldn't be able to afford all new ones. Plus, Sidewinder and Boomerang, maybe Mind Eraser, and all the flat rides deserve to live. I say they add a GCI Twister III that recreates the original Mister Twister with a bigger drop and larger helix. Also I wouldn't mind if they ditched Half Pipe. Its a maintenance nightmare.
@@efandmk3382 Exactly my point. Its a dump because there was a powerful competitor next door (elitches), now people will go to Lakeside and they will have money to fund and modernize everything.
@@efandmk3382 It is not a dump, it is very old and doesn't have as big of a budget. Just because the rides are all older doesn't mean its a dump. Lakeside is preserved in its history, unlike Elitch Gardens. Lakeside has suffered for decades because Elitch's became popular.
@@knightlykin1499 Modernizing Lakeside would ruin Lakeside. Its perfectly fine as it, and the owners intend on it staying that way for generations to come!
Quinton Parchment I actually wanna own a theme park as a profession when I’m an adult and put theme parks in obscure places. Just wait a few (a lot) years!
Who cares about community benefit for generations when a handful of people can make a short-term profit? Elitch Gardens is one of this country’s most historic parks. However, maybe this park’s doom was sealed when they first decided to move it from the original site, the site with actual GARDENS, to a dump of a site, and then fill it with clone rides. Still, a sad end of an era.
It would be better to relocate the park outside the city of Denver. They should have more land space to build at least a 200 acres park so they can build larger rides and better attractions.
Honestly, this is really excellent news. Elitches is rather small, yet being landlocked, has no space to expand. Its limited variety of rides become restrictive after a while. With any luck, they’ll simply uproot the park, move it elsewhere where there’s plenty of room to expand, and then...well, expand.
This makes me so sad. I lived in Colorado Springs 13 years, I remember trekking the hour drive up to the park to enjoy the little coasters. Not the best park, but it will always have a spot in my heart.
Ellich Gardens isn't downtown technically. I was there in December of 2013 for work and stayed at a hotel in downtown Denver. That park is way down in a valley between the sports stadiums. Everything looked so tiny! It was weird looking down at rollercoasters from the parking lot of my hotel. Unfortunately, it was snowing like crazy and about 18 degrees, so there's no way that the park was open. I didn't realize how small the park is either. Who is going to pay to move it? And where would they move it to, if they decide to?
Actually it is, depending on what you would call downtown. It is just not right in the middle of the city, but it is still right there next to the Auraria campus and the highway. Its also not that far down in a valley, its at the same elevation as the city. While it is small, they do have an impressive amount of rides there for their space. How were you looking down at the roller coasters? Were you parked on a roof or something? The coasters are pretty tall, you could look at the straight at them sure but not down at them per say. It definitely wasn't open in December, they always close at the start of November. The owner, Stan Kroenke, could pay to move it if he wishes to do so. He owns the LA Rams, LA Gladiators, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, Colorado Mammoth sports teams. Herschend Family Entertainment operates the park, and if they both decide to move the park, there is plenty of land near DIA or in nearby Aurora as well as many other open spaces they could go outside of Denver.
elitches has been a special place for a lot of people in the Denver area, it's what we would look forward to in our summers, and one of the huge Colorado attractions. I'm so sad to see it go after being there my whole life, and I'm going to be HEARTBROKEN if they don't relocate it, which will take yearsss anyway.
it feels very similar to the closing of oceade in Brussels in Belgium, it also hat to close for stupid redevelopment, the city will be building a large shopping center on its place
Jochem van der Meulen im still pissed it was closed, i’m not a huge fan of water parks but oceade was so much fun. oh well, at least there’s still aqualibi
What about the light rail station? They will have to rename it, what would that do for the city it sucks, Mind Eraser was my First inverting coaster, I love SLC’s and Boomerang’s. I am a Denver coaster enthusiast, riden 65 coasters 60 of which in this year alone, I was also at Alton towers the day before you went there on your European coaster tour. Second of all, Sidewinder was my teacher’s favorite coaster, my friends first inverting coaster, and my favorite. It is also one of 2 arrow shuttle loops in America! This park should be made a Denver landmark.
I've heard that too. Somewhere in NE Aurora near E470 and/or I70. I think that's just a rumor, though. That would be expensive. Water. sewage. power, streets. a light rail line (children don't drive)...A lot of entities have to be in agreement to back this project before it could happen.
This is definitely a big threat to the Sidewinder (the Arrow shuttle loop), but with how popular it is among guests combined with its small footprint and status as Colorado's first looping coaster opening in 1990, it hopefully would get saved when the time comes. I'm a native Coloradan and its my favorite ride at the park and I would be devastated to see it get scraped like most of the other Arrow shuttle loops over the years have been. When the time comes I'm going to try my best to save it, because it truly deserves to live on. Hopefully it is moved to the third Elitch Gardens location if they move, or it is sold to some other small park who will reconstruct it again rather than let it sit like so many other relocated rides. It deserves to live on much more than the ill-fated Half Pipe. That ride is never open and breaks down constantly. I say scrap the Half Pipe.
Who will sign a paper with me to keep Elitches? Also fucked up because theme parks do take a long time to build so when Elitches close we probably won’t have another theme park for 2 to 4 years :/ and twister 2 is such an original like what the hell if they do move it they have to make a twister 3 🤷🏻♀️
Eltich moved some years ago. That mean Lakewood will be the only park left. It in a perfect location with the Pepsi center and mile high and Coors field all around there
Ik im Late to this like REALLY late but this is my home park and about a month ago they bought 2.5 acre’s of land so I’m not expecting it to go anywhere any time soon. They also renovated a lot of twister last year which is why it wasn’t open all of last year and is opening again this season.

Well that blows. First I live in Houston and they take away my Astroworld and now the closest coasters I have are in Denver and they are taking that away too.
Bummer
So you've never been to Six Flags Over Texas? Six Flags Fiesta Texas? Sea World San Antonio? Last I checked, they all have coasters.
@@matthewmiller7207 also SDC and Frontier City
@@matthewmiller7207 exactly! Houston has so many theme parks near by.
#saveelitchgardens
Get this trending so the Denver council see it 😂
Grew up with Eliches as my home park and I am personally not mad about this... would give Colorado a reason to build a new park that has actually good coasters in it... and don’t even start arguing with me that Minderaser and Boomerang are good coasters. Haha. Plenty of flat and open land outside of downtown Denver to develop on.
I completely agree. That park blows. Bulldoze it, find some investors and build a real park.
I mean true, makes me sad but true
Oof if they get rid of it all we'll have left is Lakeside
There have been rumours that the park would be relocated close to Denver International Airport.
This reminds me of astroworld
Roller coaster Stef That's what I was thinking. Now THAT situation was SCANDALOUS as hell!!
astroworld was sad because six flags was dumb and needed to stop purchasing parks but brought a huge debt
Astroworld was worse. At least Elich's owner (Stan Kroenke, who owns the LA Rams, Denver Nuggets and the Avalanche sports teams) has the money to move a few of the classic rides, and start fresh with cheap land by the airport. Astroworld was just razed, and the land just sitting there.
astro world shut down because six flags was too lazy to deal with the crime problems the park had

Never been there... I’m from Germany and it looks fun and if I lived “there” I’ll be sad it has to go
I think they're moving it closer to the DIA, which totally blows
Cherry they are smh
It never closed did it?
Thanks for the info. I hope the park does get to be moved.
They have relocated Elitches once before so maybe it’s not a problem for them moving it again as well as revamping it maybe in Lakewood
I like how they always call these apartments affordable housing but you know they're gonna cost you an arm and a leg when they actually build them
Since the same company that runs this manages Magic Springs in Arkansas, maybe some of those flat rides, the dark ride and that Half Pipe coaster could be relocated there.
Right?
Encourage tourism to an area by getting rid of an amusement park. Makes perfect sense.
Beutifuly said
Yep! And it won't take long. Flush the politics! Guess us Americans thrown under the bus once again
Have they even started impact assessment yet? If not it may not end up happening on time and will go over budget.
It's the owners that want to do it plus they'll be moving the park if it goes through up by Dick's Sporting Goods Park
The city council clearly didn't learn from Kentucky Kingdom not to mess with us
Charley Hibschweiler The fair board caused the demise of the Six Flags era of The Kingdom.
That’s so stupid. Makes me angry.
As much as I loved Elitches, a bottle of soda was like in the $5-7 range. Welp, here I come Lakeside. Your business will boom.
No it won't. Lakeside is a dump!
@@efandmk3382
Exactly my point.
Why are they doing these stupid expansion????, I feel bad the people won't have a theme park in colarodo
Quinton Parchment I actually wanna own a theme park as a profession when I’m an adult and put theme parks in obscure places. Just wait a few (a lot) years!

Quinton, how about dueling wing coasters!
They'll still have Lakeside park. Although not a full fledged thrill park it is still a nice heritage amusement park.
Rip, thanks for the memories
Its been 5 months, And elitch gardens is still there? :/ When will it happen? And they just added a new Ride, I dont think there closing?
and if they where to move elitch gardens the city council would have to pay for it
Looks like my city council members aren’t getting re-elected
You just cannot kill Mr Twister...that's 1st degree murder!
I'm still missing the *original* Elitch Gardens. Mister Twister was the first big coaster I ever rode and it scared the living crap out of me.
I’m going to elitch in august, and though it’s sad to see it go, I’m glad I’m going well I can. Is there any tips or anything I might want to know?
Even though this is two years later I thing you should go on all the rides
I’m headed to CO this summer from TX on a road trip and I really hope i get the chance to check this place out!!!!
Herschend Family Entertainment operates the park, and if they both decide to move the park, there is plenty of land near DIA or in nearby Aurora as well as many other open spaces they could go outside of Denver.
twister 2 is closed down for good now
elitches has been a special place for a lot of people in the Denver area, it's what we would look forward to in our summers, and one of the huge Colorado attractions. I'm so sad to see it go after being there my whole life, and I'm going to be HEARTBROKEN if they don't relocate it, which will take yearsss anyway.
I had the exact same feeling in 1994.
it feels very similar to the closing of oceade in Brussels in Belgium, it also hat to close for stupid redevelopment, the city will be building a large shopping center on its place
I agree, I grew up going to this park!
If they relocate, then I could see Twister 3 being a thing
It is not closing forever they will move it more towards the airport
I've heard that too. Somewhere in NE Aurora near E470 and/or I70. I think that's just a rumor, though. That would be expensive. Water. sewage. power, streets. a light rail line (children don't drive)...A lot of entities have to be in agreement to back this project before it could happen.
Now get ready for:
*Twister 3*
At least Knoebels will keep its spirit alive with its Twister coaster modeled closely after the original Mister Twister.
I am from here and it kills me it's happening. Gentrification sucks
Dude... I’m just about to move out to Denver for college... that sucks! Hopefully It’ll still be there when I’m there!
They could use this as an opportunity, open up a nice new space. Open up a brand new GCI called twister 3?
I would be concerned about the arrow shuttle loop's future. One of the only few left and if they "relocate" it would most likely be demolished.
It in a perfect location with the Pepsi center and mile high and Coors field all around there
Goodbye Elitch Gardens
Ik im Late to this like REALLY late but this is my home park and about a month ago they bought 2.5 acre’s of land so I’m not expecting it to go anywhere any time soon. They also renovated a lot of twister last year which is why it wasn’t open all of last year and is opening again this season.
