i was an inmate in the nineties 3 times, i was in one of the last van loads of prisoners to be moved to a country jail from Pentridge or "her majesties hotel", in those last months the place really fell apart, it was a God forsaken hellhole, i was in on my third trip due to thefts to support a bad heroin habit, these days there are better treatments for addiction and we all eventually grow up if the universe allows it. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Interesting trip down memory lane.

I can't imagine how bad the cells felt then compared to modern day cells and prisoner units

@@kryptyx111 Another of our favourite nicknames for Pentridge was "the belly of the beast", the cells were beyond disgusting.

Thank you for your insights first hand. Your description of the life at your time tells the story.

Only in Australia would they turn a prison into a shopping center, and cinema... For me, I have too many memories of Pentridge as a prison, and a place in which people were hanged. I remember going around pentridge when they had opened it up to the public after they had closed the prison... And I found it incredibly depressing and somewhat distressing experience.

I have one of choppers letters he sent from here. The year he shot the Turk. He sent it to his father from H division. In the letter it’s stated that he thought murder should be a “5 bob fuckin fine” and that god was on “his side, not the Turks” and “ stop sending letters to the homacide squad, they are starting to build a nut file on you”

If you could only come up with ned kelly and choppa read you did no research for this vid. The last man hanged in australia Ronald ryan escaped from pentridge. Alot of the worst crims in aussie were kept and killed here

Fkn spot on, got everyone from the Allen and peirce family's, all the way through to Julian, flannery, FSPDU and there the recent ones I guess you could say, plus a shit load more. There's alot of history behind those walls, more than just Ned and Chopper.

Place reminds me of Williamstown Primary School back in the early 1970's, just cyclone wire instead of bars.

A prison must command fear. With its high walls and central location Pentridge did just that. Who even sees the new prison? So it doesn't have the same psychological effect on deterring crime.
