- The Wanptek power supply suddenly stopped working while it was charging a battery. No voltage regulation, no current output. I contacted the seller on AliExpress and... what can I say, they fixed it remotely! Yes, the Wanptek benchtop power supply is alive again. What an amazing service from the Wanptek Official Store.

Cheers mate, i had similar power supply sitting here that the supplier on ebay would do nothing to help me with. it died after about a weeks use and i hadn't had a chance to look at it yet.i just pulled it apart and replaced the filtering cap, (luckily I had a Spare in my parts rack) and it is working fine again. thanks for the video.

At first, I appreciate the effort from them helping you repair it. Simply getting a replacement power supply would mean one could end up in a landfill. Always better to repair than replace when possible.
That said, if what some of the others are pointing out is correct, I'd be disappointed if the manufacturer gave bad advice on shorting it. If it leads to catastrophic failure down the line, I hope it doesn't also cause some other equipment or batteries to go with it.
The short is just for testing purposes. I'll replace the capacitor soon.
Hi Andy. Mine arrived today! Bang on a week after ordering, not bad at all, all the way from China to Scotland whilst the UK can't keep it's own 💩 supplied on supermarket shelves and petrol stations full.
Back on subject, after acidently pumping 14.8v and raising into a12v AGM... I re-watched your origional Wanptek video from way back on your playlist. Now I have it working perfectly, another AGM's currant is tailing off as set at 13.5v.
Do I go to bed or watch this novelty count down???

I still have a long way to go, Cable for solar array and wind turbine is my final big ticket purchase then it is put it all together and pray. Your help and guidance through the power of youtube has been extreamly helpfull. Even with shopping just for a pre switch on charge resisor thing your channel links are a great tool to clear the fog.

Thanks for this video! I thought I burnt up the transformer on my Wanptek power supply, after watching your video, I pulled the filter capacitor off the board, but it turned out to be fine. But in doing so found that the thermistor right next to it was burnt and cracked, I replaced the thermistor and bingo, I'm back up and running again.

I have another variation of this power supply, but with identical main PCB. So, I advice you not to run this power supply with short-circuited capacitor!!! This capacitor connected in series with primary winding of main power transformer and acts as DC blocking capacitor to protect power circuit of MOSFET half-bridge + primary winding from transformer saturation and failing of transistors. So, you need replace this capacitor with good one ASAP! This is thin-film polyester capacitor. My PCB has the following rating: 1 uF and 400V. As unit's scheme is based on computer's ATX power supply schematics, where this capacitor was almost never failed, I suppose a bad quality of it. I'll recommend to replace this capacitor with 2 capacitors, which is connected in parallel, with 630 V rating and with summary capacity not smaller, than original, or, better, more in value. For example, 2 capacitors of 1 uF x 630 V in parallel. I'll recommend to buy a polypropylene thin-film capacitors. It is best type for power supplies.
I second this. It's catastrophic to run the power supply without that capacitor. IT NEEDS TO BE THERE. Please replace with a new, order one in, it's CHEAP!
I think it would also void the electrical standards certificate, it could generate more noise back on to the supply as well which might harm the inverter

I have this same failure on the big red capacitor, is this 400v AC or DC? Can I replace with 1uf 84V ac/450V dc metalized PP film cap?

Thanks Andy, very informative. Surprising support for a $75 power supply. U.S., Europe or Down Under manufactures or dealers would not waste the time, or consider walking a customer through such as repair out of fear of becoming lawyer bait. I'm also curious if you were able to get a voltage rating on the filter cap? My guess it could be only 250V, so upgrading it to a higher voltage or quality replacement might be worthwhile for other users.
I'm looking for a 100V DC bench power supply and noticed Wanptek offers some inexpensive 120v 3A models, but I'm thinking a the 60V 1kw unit might be better for bench testing and for battery charging, building a dedicated charging rig using a higher current DC to DC boost converter with high-quality pots, adding an adjustable over-voltage relay and an inexpensive shunt-based volt, current and watt/hour meter and might be handy.
I think i can see your next failure in this power supply .... Take a look at the 1000uf 63v cap next to the toroid coil at 6:02 mins. It looks rather puffed up on the top. Happy solar-ing and soldering !!!.
It seems, that this power supply has insufficient cooling due to incorrect fan regulation circuit. Manufacturer tried to implement "noize killer" circuit, which regulates fan's voltage (and performance) from temperature reading of MOSFETs + rectifier diode zone. But sensor hasn't adequate thermal coupling to semiconductors. So, this toroid inductance, capacitors (and many other components) experience long-term overheating. As for my own 2 similar power supplies, I'm planning to install unregulated ball-bearing fan with direct feeding, without control circuitry - it will constantly work at full power.
for high current charging take a look at a cc cv welder for that. nice repair.

My power supply went up in smoke altogether now. Haven't opened it yet...
Same brand here. I run it for weeks for electroforming 24/7. Its about 5 years old now. I do have a 12v computer fan that runs in front. The internal fan hardly runs on its own.
Thanks for sharing. I run it mainly for charging the batteries and the occasional electronic PCB power supply when testing. The fan comes on frequently when under heavy load or higher outside temperatures. It is loud though I found.

I have 2 PSUs from WANPTEK, so thank you for sharing this. I was running one from an inverter and it seems to doesn't like it, as the voltage regulation become very badly responsive. I might try similar repair. I guess they do not like inverter feed...
Mine runs form the inverter all the time. It has never seen anything else in it's life. Maybe the inverter does not like the switching PS?
@@OffGridGarageAustralia I was running it from a modified sine, so it would be bit more stressful in my case. Also, it was heating up much more, than from the grid socket (Total run on MS was about 70-100 Hours. Then I noticed melted connectors and voltage response issues). Overall, I think that Switching PSW (well different way to address PWM really) is not really ideal substitute power input for regular grid appliances. Especially, if the device is using some form of inductive loads. It is very hard to truly filter the voltage spikes...I guess, that proper filters would be much more expensive than the devices themselves. Trade off from analog to digital has to show somewhere..
That cap looks to be capacitive drop using Xc of the capacitor to limit the current, that cap should be replaced. If it is filter cap between Line and Neutral the it should be X rated cap, and no way you can short out filter cap without creating dead short across the AC line. You should ask for schematic diagram to verify.

That means your not the only one having problems if he was that specific about where to look. I used to be a repair technician and when a piece of equipment broke it was the same weak component on every one that broke. He should have taken it back.

Have a look into the Riden RD6018 units. Those can provide up to 60V / 18A (depending on the source voltage). If you want to charge 48V packs, a sufficient source voltage (60V or so) is required since it has to provide 55-56V on the output.
But for lower banks (12V and 24V) you can get cheap powersupplies from old routers/switches. Look eg at old Cisco 6500 series powersupplies. The CAC-2500 can provide 55A / 42V, making it, together with 2,3 or even 4 Riden units, a big ass powerstation for charging up to 4 24V packs or so!
Would cost you 450 aus dollar, but that would be a kick ass charger (Up to 4x 28V / 18A simultanous)
There is one on sale on Ebay Aus for AUD 55. Listed as DS-CAC but I think thats a typo, should be WS-CAC-2500
I'm getting the RD6020 now from WanpTek directly via AliExpress. That's 1.2kW of charging power for a 60V battery.
Nice when a company provides service ... encourages me - but I remain very skeptical of doing business directly in China - my preference is to find a domestic firm that sells a product and provides the service as well.
That would be the ideal situation. If you look on eBay, you will find many of the products sold on AliExpres just locally available. However, I doubt, you will get the service through the eBay seller as they will just buy on Ali anyway and add a margin for their own business. If you can find a manufacturer of these products locally, that would be ideal.

I have a power supply similar to yours and I have to laugh... ok ok I do have 0-60V 0-17A x2, this one more fun to play with, 2kW to play.
this could not be a capacitor, since it was in series in the circuit. Capacitors behave like open connections when under low frequencies. To short circuit any capacitor is in general a bad idea unless one knows exactly what is doing. Even filtering capacitors are typicaly between line and neutral and short circuit them is really a bad idea. What it might have been is a self resetting fuse (which failed to reset and stayed open) - then shorting it would get the expected effect. It might also have been a coil to fitler RF - coils are also connected in series and behave like short circuit under low frequencies. Regardless of what the component really was and how it was named - great support from the vendor! really, i would wish this level of support from other as well!
Thanks for another great episode. I am not an electronics expert by any means, but bypassing a component seems dodgy to me. Why was it there in the first place, what was its function and does it compromise something now.
Hi James, I said this in the video. It's only a filter capacitor... I will replace it with a new one soon. This repair was more for trouble shooting.
Yeah, I assumed it was a safety cap and bypassing would just confirm that this was the issue. Step one. No real danger unless there was a big voltage spike that would fry the PSU.
THERES A 10 AMP POWER SUPPLY SIMILAR TO THE ONE YOU HAVE THATA GIVE YOU A LITTLE MORE HEADROOM . MAY THE SOLAR BE WITH YOU .
That's only 30V though... not good for a 55V battery 😌
My wanpteck 60v, 5 amp power supply let the smoke out the 3rd time I used it.

Woooo, Andy I do not like this kind of fix as I assume that there was a reason (design wise) to have that “Capacitor” in place. At least I would want to replace it with another cap and then move on. God knows that switching supplies are nosy and can use all the help they can get with reducing that factor.
Couldn't you have verified the bad cap just by installing the jumper, without removing the cap?

hello, a little message and some information from France, I am presenting my problem: on a lifepo4 battery element, the clamping screw is messed up and it is possible to redo the thread with a tap, but with a larger diameter, or else to glue the damaged remainder with red loctite, is there enough metal left on the electrode? thank you for your professional advice,

I'll be charging at the UQ Gatton charger today on the way to Stanthorpe. We are having a rare weekend away. It will almost seem familiar from your other channels early videos.
The phone chat & photos are way less expensive than having a receiving & repair department and all the costs associated with that.
And it's quicker. However you need to have the right people on each end of the line.

I know. They gave me $20 discount for the trouble with the other one. I just don't have time to shop around for cheaper parts and put this all together just to save $100. I rather have it in one piece and it just works. Gives me more time to make videos 😊🤳

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, fire blankets are common on boats in the galley, to extinguish oil or alcohol fires. They used to be made of wool, then fiberglass, and the best new ones are Aramid or Kevlar. All fireproof, so they cut off the oxygen to a fire. Different sizes, all fairly compact, inexpensive (except for the Aramid or Nomex grades), and need no maintanence or recharging.
Several buckets of salt or sand are also good specifically for battery fires.
And neither the blankets or the buckets leave a duststorm to clean up in the shop.
I was wondering? since you built your own power supply way back when, why don't you build another? you could build one more closely suited to your needs? I've been looking at things on ebay, amazon, and aliexpress only to find the delivery dates are often quoted to be close to each other and aliexpress b usually being the fastest is there representation of postage time incorrectly stated?
It's just lack of time, Peter. I ordered a ready build power supply with 60V and 20A for charging purposes. There are certainly cheaper options out there but I don't have the additional time to look around finding the right parts and putting this all together. That would be something for channel #5. 😊
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Ha ha channel #5, Yeah I know what you mean, I was looking at different ways of testing/charging and looked at getting the small tester you have but cant justify the cost for my small need, I have a 6A charger (a bit small) but it has all the built in feature displays, I have ordered a cheaper 30v 10A power supply and a 12v 600w power supply these combined with my other equipment should be enough to get the required results.

I was about to buy a Victron 30A charger, and even though the Victron will probably be better quality, a proper bench supply will be more useful.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia You can buy them complete only assemble with case and extra power supply, best thing is, you can swap the power supply easy when broken, like this video, and even use lower ones if the project don't require 60v, I guess I make a custom panel for it integrated in my desk. I like the wifi option on them as well, I buy these 60v PSU's and make a 12cm van on it for cooling and its fairly quiet. with fan max 28, without up to 50 degrees, cant be good for the hardware.

Ehh, that's common with AC components. Usually the first thing that gives up the ghost first. Caps are notorious for failing. Look up "capacitor plague" from 2 decades ago, worked in a computer shop refurbing blown boards. Fun times.
Quality has nothing to do with the failure of capacitors used in this way very well respected brands fail all the time. I have replaced more than I can remember I have even replaced them with ones double the voltage they last longer but still eventually fail.
@@jamess1787 ive bought enough chinese junk to know about 80% of their components are fake or just downright trash/badly installed (dry solder joints/lacking thermal paste) to be very wary of them, inverters being the expensive lesson.

Please read more about Class-X and Class-Y Capacitors. A support which just says "short em out" is everything, but not responsible. Seems to be one of this carefree chinese "if it blows up, you can not get me" factories.

Oddly enough, I own several Wanptek supplies, including a 1200 watt supply. Mine is 30v at 40 amps since I have 24v battery packs. It does run hot, and while not quite as bad as a 1U server, the fan whine is very noticeable. I also noticed with my thermal camera that parts are running around 100 degrees C internally. Anyway, eventually I will take the cover off and see what is running so hot. The direct to a specific part diagnosis leads me to suspect they got a bad batch of parts. I would find out the value and rating and replace the part. I can also very much recommend Riden supplies. Top notch.

You have just given them am excuse to not refund you because you have tampered with it.... Now any problems with it are because of something you have done.... when you buy something and it doesn't work SEND IT BACK
The company that supplied that power supply didn't make it there are hundreds of sellers outing that product have a look on eBay

At least the service is better than of the chinese company i bought the inverters from. One was faulty delivered, and they sent me a motherboard for replacement, because they were not so confident about their own personell...

You wouldn't get this service from any western store, they would not want you to take anything apart let alone fix it yourself. Kinda makes me think twice about right to repair with buying from China.
