Nowadays in the U.K. to do this they would have to do a risk assessment, have a river licence, wear high viability life jackets and not go near the Houses of Parliament.
There are no legal requirements of getting on the water unless you have a VHF radio. The inviolability of autonomy rules on the waves - utter freedom. I’ve met enough fools who don’t have any safety equipment, nor knowledge of tides, or ColRegs. But they’re free to take the risks.
Hahaha I never noticed that. His expressionless face trying to look like Steed of The Avengers. Poor Vespa think of the rust ! Also poor girl looked frozen in that Thames wind.
The passing under the bridge (1:07) was either done with an ~10kt following river current or the pair was staged on a boat to appear as if riding the scooter, then the boat driven under the bridge. This thing looks to do around 2kts max, and that's with a tailwind.
This newsreel's soundtrack is "Good Choice (later renamed to Tea at Tiffany's)" by Heinz Kiessling, from his 1964 album Coloured Strings. Many of his tracks are also used in the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
This is a disaster !! You see how things got REAL when they got into the water and the engine started smoking? The girl holding her legs up, Their feet are soaked for sure.
Foam can also be caused by proteins in the water (decomposing plant/animal life, feces etc.) You especially see that on bodies of water that have been extremely riled in some way (i.e. a hurricane/high winds/storms) The real question is . . . how'd he keep from swamping the engine on his scooter??
by trashing a pair of shoes every time you take this into the water it helped to boost the British economy back then, the idea has so much potential and it's so poorly executed it's amazing
There is a modern version but on 4 wheels. It is a combination of a quad-bike (aka ATV) and a jet-ski. Search for Gibbs Quad-ski for a video of at least one example.
I was just waiting for Q to pop out ’round the corner: Q: ”...and here we have a very elegant mode of locomotion.” Bond: ”Got their feet wet though.” Q: ”Bah, prototype problems! We’ll have that straightened out in a jiffy!”
This is an outrage. The man or woman are NOT wearing crash helmets or even lifejackets. What if a strong wave had turned the scooter over.A full and rigorous health and safety check should have been carried out. Did the man know that the girl could actually swim if needed. Again this was not asked.Thankfully on this occasion all ended well.
I love how he calls the people who put this slow, impractical death trap together "boffins". Ruin the whole point of a scooter by making it as wide as a car, only to make a terrible watercraft. On land one strong gust of wind would send the bike flying, & on the river, the wash from a duck would sink it.. This is like the 60's version of a kickstarter promo flogging a product that will never see the market.
British eccentricity and inventiveness at it's best.
Nowadays in the U.K. to do this they would have to do a risk assessment, have a river licence, wear high viability life jackets and not go near the Houses of Parliament.
And a rescue boat......
And not have Jeremy Clarkson or James May close by.
you forgot the safety meeting!

.......in the meantime, my brother lands his helicopter next to McDonald’s for a happy meal and washroom break. Mind you, this is in Canada.
Legend says they are somewhere on the river and about to reach the other shore.
Hey good news, 9 years later they have passed the halfway mark🤣
Don't you love the fact that he still has a suit.
Considering how wet his socks got at the 34 second mark, he impressively manages to keep his upper lip stiff.
Take a Vespa and mount 2 surfboards to it. Real creative

@@red_shadow23Lambretta 😅
Very much a tip of the bowler hat to The Avengers with John Steel and Emma Peel.
safer than a few seats in parliament LOL :D that was absolutely right
"Leisurely pace" You're damn right!
Wait, it's that easy to pick up random girls (0:30) ....wow I need a amphibious scooter
Wow, I've gotta get one of these. You get chicks and look cool as shit!

bet that didn't rust the cast iron brake drums at all
"It's safer than a few seats in Parliament" Lol
Beautiful times. Life vest for small children only.
0:31 is like "hey, random bitch, get on my scooter, it's awesome"
You can arrive at all your business meetings with squelchy shoes!
"..a passenger as well." Love the subtle insinuating drop in tone.
Yeah, you can see it sticking up at 0:19 but if his lovely assistant weighed another 10lbs, that would be underwater too! :D
i want that scooter
That's really quite ingenious, simple and effective!
I'm 40. I feel like a mid life crisis should be buying a welder, Vespa and a couple of surfboards to pick up girls half my age.
The girl is his daughter though by the way.
“It’s safer than a few seats in parliament.”
Well said good boy!
The only guy who can look that boss in a bowler hat!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA "It's safer than a few seats in parliament" ....at least news readers had a sense of humour back then

1960's : build water scooter
2000's : 13 year old drive's jetaki
Top Gear 1960s?
Seeing this in quarantine
by trashing a pair of shoes every time you take this into the water it helped to boost the British economy back then, the idea has so much potential and it's so poorly executed it's amazing
This channel is brilliant
You have to love a time when the only essential item for water safety was a bowler hat.
They both were pulled from the river a few miles downstream. The scooter was never found.
And walk into work everyday with your shoes and socks soaked lmao
The movement when water enter in to my shoes
It was Jack Hornsby and his daughter
Steed, from the 60's TV series, Avengers?
Hard to believe this didn't catch on, being so totally practical and all.................
This video blew up 8 years ago and now 2021
How to steer?
All-in-all, it's probably not the best idea anyone has ever had. Even if it worked perfectly, it would be a damned cold ride even in summer!
Being from a developing country, I can safely say that we are pretty tough too (or very ignorant - safety wise)
Me on 2021: awesome technology in 60s 😘😘
Nice, if i have this kind of ski, i can float around the big ben!
1:11 shot with GoPro VHS
Is that lambretta ?
007 jamesBond!
No mass production just yet :P
im more enjoyed by the language style and the music
Thanks for information
Старые добрые времена и люди
James Bond's jet ski scooter
Круто, девушка красивая!!!😀👍
What a crazy idea.
I wonder how he did the water propulsion bit because it moves along nicely and I doubt he used water jets.
The quick change in temperature from land to water would seize the wheel bearing and do damage to other parts

Just be sure to bring a change of shoes and socks! :D
Does wonders for the engine,too.
is that a young Jane Birkin?
Wonderful Idea.
And pass the Houses of Parliament you can see the Ministry of Silly Walks.
Wooooooo nice and very well
two stroke petrol engine on water, what could go wrong!
You know most outboard boat engines are 2 strokes
@@iant720 You have 2 strokes.
@@iant720 certainly do now! Either way I want to have a go on this thing
Amazing.
Improbable no, impracticable yes
Jolly good show chaps , top ho what !

Fkn hilarious!!, they were pissed through !, the young Girl looked like She was being kidnapped LOL, Man, this is so terrifyingly cool.

Does the passenger comes with it?
I don't quite believe that had the power to traverse the flow in the Thames.
Straight out of Quadrophenia

Brilliant!
Old people are very innovative
beautiful
And when the river is frothy and steaming, stay far away!

It goes way faster at the end haha
British are awesome...
I like how the actors acting like it was a great invention
A beautiful,rose-tinted view from when London DIDN'T have a skyline of Lego-like buildings!! IE: my childhood ;-(
Vespa's engine NEVER CUT OUT :)
It is not a vespa though. It is a lambretta. ;)
John Steed and Emma Peel ;)
Steed and Emma Peel
Anyone else cringe when his nice shoes went straight into the water.
The Hig should get one to ride across the Mersey.
Tava muito certo aqui em SP Brasil 😀😀😀
Olha estou admirando com seus vídeos é legal .. ... ....
