I was first in Thailand nearly 40 years ago for a couple of months as a single young man on my way back from Goa. Ive been back to Thailand many times and hope to get a few more trips in before I shuffle off to the other side 😊. Always great videos & good fun to watch.
There’s nothing wrong with being frugal on this journey Ryan! Love watching your Chiang Mai adventures and cannot wait to see more 😊 Thanks for posting this video:)
Early 2000s you had smoke in your room, I still remember the high all these years later 😊 I've only stayed in the hostel once and that was in Perth,Australia It was 10 beds mixed dormitories, had the best time, even though most 10yrs younger
I did the overnight train from Bkk to Chiang Mai - loved it. Had a shared cabin with a girl from Manchester, we spent most of the night chatting, snacking & drinking Singha. I'd heard not to book a return - Chiang Mai draws you in so you end up staying longer than intended. Good advice! Stretched out the trip by another 3 days & got a good deal on a flight with Nok Air back to Bkk. Those days, you could check in at a stand in the basement of the shopping mall near to the airport, leave your shopping then return to collect it & get ferried over to the departure gate. Good times.
Loving these vlogs, I'm a little older than you but you inspire me to better myself and start exploring my country which is Scotland, always sending you and your family positive good vibes 🤍💜💛🤍💜💛🤍💜✌🏼💛
Another good video which I enjoyed. I will be arriving in CM on 1ST October on my 11th visit. I wont be staying in a hostel as my pensioner body couldn't handle it! I am flying in from BKK but have usually driven there from Khon Kaen, which I enjoyed. Was in Pai for a week last year and loved the drive, major concentration required :). Onto Jomtiem after 10 days in CM but mabye end up in Chiang Rai as usual! I am sure you will enjoy your adventure and look forward to seeing you experiences.
Noon and I had the conversation that Chiang Mai had really changed in the past 15 years. We really liked the old City charm, but nothing stays the same.. It always keeps moving forward.. Stay Safe, and Stay Blessed !
You've offered a lot of value documenting what family life can be like in Thailand on your other channel, but I gotta say I'm enjoying these solo adventures where your letting your hair down a bit more! Well uh.. you know what I mean 😂 I also try to stay frugal and stretch my dollar so I appreciate your cheap Charlie-ness and showing those options!
If you want a room for 2, just fan but even cheaper(290 BHT) Tapae Inn (you can see at 4:05) is the place. Old school and funky. The place is like if Sanford & Son ran a hotel.
My friend and I treated ourselves and stayed at the Lebua hotel in Bangkok, the one from the movie hangover 2 just so that we could say that we stayed there. But we were unable to find the slum they woke up in otherwise we would have stayed there too, at the end of the day memories and stories are all you have so live life and have some fun.
Great watch - makes me want to wander down memory lane as well! Going frugal when on the move has a special feel to it in it's own right - that splashing out would simply contradict! We've been upping the level of convenience as we "matured", but looking forward to the next "backpacker style" trip! Man, you fit in as naturally on the trail, just as well as you fit in rural. You have shit to prove, and if proving something was actually on - you've already done it! Have fun, and big thanks for sharing!
I am older than the average age of people that stay in hostels. However, as you stated I find it an often good option to meet other people and socialize. Staff can also be a good source of local information. Things to see and do, etc.
A bit furter east down Chang Moi is a new Italian coffee shop called Amore Tiramisu. She hasn't been open long, but her food and coffee are "to die for"!
Excellent Vlog Ryan. Chiangmai was my first destination in Thailand and like yourself I have a certain affinity for the place. The north of Thailand I have to say is in my opinion the most beautiful. Nothing wrong with being a bit frugal with your spending especially if there's no need too. Enjoy the rest of your trip 😊
No way! I was living at the Prince Hotel around the corner from Brewginning about a year and a half ago while doing my TEFL cert! This was my favorite coffee shop to stop at in the mornings. Thanks for sharing - this was a nice trip down memory lane. I miss it so much and am plotting how I can get back very soon. ❤
Memory lane. For a couple of years in my 20s I'd work 6 months then backpack 6 weeks in hostels. Worst experience 1982 Ireland in January. 🥶 everything was closed. Train and bus schedules did not sync. Lol sure it must be better now. Caught pneumonia. Sick as a dog in London. Had to leave hostel every day for about 6 hours. Wandered the streets then went back to bed. Fantastic time of year to get winter clothes on clearance tho. Packed my dirty clothes in boxes shipped home via sea. Took all new wardrobe home. Really enjoying your trip back into my past! 😻
The opportunity to travel and stay in a hostel seems more enjoyable than a hotel stay. I would like to experience the different seasons in Thailand also. Safe travels. Next trip, father and son.👍
I was in Malaysia some years ago. Peaceful and beautiful country, particularly Northern Borneo, was nice. I have been to Thailand too, but too touristy to my taste. I enjoy your genuine style of videos. Keep it up!
First time I've really listened to you. Good job being able to make a decent living here. I taught scuba 10 years on Phuket.. That was for Fun.. Worked 3 months back home every year for the serious money. Like you, I'm taking care of kids. So, I'm cheap Charlie too. Cheers
took several trips before i found a scuba dive guide who also sold weed on the side - great way to relax after a day of diving but remember being too paranoid to enjoy it in public ( 2014 )
Chiang Mai is hopeless for me now. There's tons of nice little areas but they're all intervened by big horrible roads that make going anywhere a hassle. All they build are congested housing projects because the price of land is so high even on the outskirts. I told my wife I can't handle it anymore and rented a house up in the mountains and she can visit me on the weekend. In 2024 better places to live if you like the north.
Ahhhhh Chiang Mai. I love it! Spent most of my time in Chiang Mai whilst in Thailand. My ex Wife is from there, so I've spent many years there. Good memories. But you're right, it has totally changed. So modern and Bangkok like now. Unfortunately
Really enjoy these travel vlogs m8 keep them coming...no fancy editing or bullshit just a straight talking fellow Lancashire lad out in Thailand I can relate to 👌🏽
Traveled 1st and 2nd class once from the old station in Bangkok looks much better on The new trains ,is it more smooth on the tracks ? Didn’t sleep much but enjoyed the experience a lot . Thanks for your life experiences and family!
I regularly take the train BKK cha am 3hrs always go 3rd class wooden seat open window 🪟 classic adventure not sure I’d do that bblk - Chang mi same style 3rd class 😮
I used to love Chiang Mai,but the last couple of times I didn't really enjoy it.I was there for the loy kratung parade last time and it was so packed out with a lot of (dare I say)rude Chinese (trying to curb my xenophobia)..Rip off prices for the khoms fir the kids(those lanterns that you light and they float to the sky)...I think I have been to Pie probably 35 years ago,but it wasn't a thing then.Did the hilltribe village visit, mai Hong song loop tried the opium, sick as a dog I was, driving back to Chiang Rai... oh the good old days. That tube party near Pie looks good craic.(seen on UA-cam). Keep up the good vlogs, and yes I look forward to you doing more traveling with your son.
I am following you extensively on Ryan and Mo. Although this is interesting and informative, not having Yai, Damo, 'Tis and 'Go around, just does not create the same feel. Keep up the good work, mate! ...but for me, I hugely prefer the family channel! ...and there is nowhere in Thailand that you are not greeted with the view of a myriad of cables. It is quintessential Thailand!
Highly recommend Cafe Arte while you're here in Chiang Mai. They have a beautiful front and the staff is amazing. I've only been maybe 6 times in the last year but the staff always remembers me and my girlfriend and always ask about her if I go alone.
Love the expression Cheap Charlie...my late Thai wife and her mate... used it a lot in NZ... especially when we were doing work in the vineyards... and the Boss was a miserable payer.... great vlog.... Ryan

Made me laugh with the cheap Charlie 😂. I’m exactly the same. Started backpacking 25 years ago, now settled and comfortable in China but will still search out cheap digs. Maybe I’m just a tight northerner😂
A bit of a smoke with some CBD is all good dude. Eating or vaping is even better. To get a decent dose in you 300mg of full spectrum (low THC) that's a lot to smoke.
I used hostels on the Camino de Santiago…. but eventually got tired of the snoring and unpleasant personal habits of others and the dirty showers. After a while I would book a private room in a hostel for my sanity….
Agree with you regarding dubious people teaching English, this is the norm for schools now in Buriram. Most schools in Amphoe Nang Rong now only employ non-native teachers, which isn't good, but I understand why.

Hi Ryan reading through the comments and hearing again your reference to being 'tight' with your budget, maybe you should change the name to 'Cheap Charlie's Channel' 🤣 In this, the third episode of this trip to the north, I'm still wondering when you actually did this trip. With the bad floods up north in the past week, did you get in and out before that started? Did you get caught up in it a little? Were you already back home? The adventure, mystery and intrigue continue... Looking forward to to later this evening, my time in Adelaide, for the next episode, when I'll hopefully watch just after you release it.
Super with all of this. Went from being broke backpacker to quite wealthy here in SEA. Still love staying in super cheap places when traveling alone. Forever a bit of a rat on the inside. Simple life often rules.
WOW you worked in a Benjamin school, I was in โรงเรียนเบญจมเทพอุทิศ kids amazing horrible boss. I loved all the kids from rich to very poor, the poor ones where the best as with a bit of time they showed the most when the Thai teacher hated them. It's all about talking to them and show them you care.
I've done the sleeper train to Chiang Mai several times, had some wild times, I spent about 12 years in Chiang Mai, going to Pai, Mae sai, Chiang Dao to name just a couple of places, have you ever been to the damn at Mae gnat? Check it out on UA-cam, it's awesome, have a lovely trip and have fun in Pai, safe travels 💓.
Hi Ryan! Just curious - why not just hop a quick flight from either Buriram or Khon Kaen directly to Chiang Mai? It would be much faster, and probably much cheaper, than taking a VIP bus, traveling the opposite direction, all the way down to BKK, and then taking a first- or second-class train ride up to Chiang Mai. I would love to fully understand the logic and thought process. Anyway, have yourself a great trip! Cheers!
