Thank you for this; I am new to FOW. I just bought a scout/spearhead unit because in my last game my armored rifle platoon was pinned by artillery (and never unpinned) as soon as they tried to move to the forest and some buildings just outside my deployment area. If I had a spearhead unit they could have safely deployed there and I suppose been automatically dug-in and would not have gotten pinned -- but I didn't know the details of how that works.
Also the explanation that gone-to-ground doesn't mean anything if you are not concealed was helpful; I don't think I knew that. (it hasn't come up yet, but would now that I have scouts)

I always thought that all three criteria for spearhead were this and this and this, not this or this or this.

You have to meet the 3 criteria... It's not one superside the other... when you deploy your spearhead... it have to be at least 16" away from the enemy deployment zone, it as to be more then 16" away from any enemy unit and if you are less then 16" but more then 8" from any enemy unit if your are concealed from the enemy. So you can be 8" away from the enemy if concealed but you still have to be at least 16" from the enemy deployment zone. Sorry if I make it sound like it is one or the others... All three criteria as to be met when you deplay with spearhead
