  • In this Physics video in Hindi for class 11 we explained Hooke's Law from the chapter 'Mechanical Properties of Solids'. It states that the stress is proportional to the strain. The restoring force per unit area is known as stress. The ratio of change in the dimension to the original dimension of the body is known as longitudinal strain.
    stress ∝ strain
    so, stress = k X strain
    where k is the proportionality constant and is known as modulus of elasticity.
    Longitudinal stress = Y X Longitudinal strain
    [here, Y is called the Young's modulus]
    Shearing stress = G X Shearing strain
    [here, G is called the shear modulus]
    Hydraulic stress = - B X volume strain
    [here, B is called the bulk modulus]
    Hooke’s law is an empirical law and is found to be valid for most materials. However, there are some materials which do not exhibit this linear relationship.
