  • We have already checked out basic LED's, now things get a little more technical. This is an overview of various types of RGB led strip and how we control them.
We also take a look at a few different types of tools and uses for these awesome little devices.

Thanks Denis for reminding me I haven't made any new tools in a while. Making the tools was half the fun of lightpainting for me. Cheers

I am rediscovering exactly that. Getting a few "making tools" vids out the way, then its onto the next sections of the Ball of Light Masterclass. It is the year of orbs after all!

Tip for powering the 5V strips: there are very small round powerbanks, about the size of a flashlight, that have normal USB ports. They output 5V so are very nice to power those LED strips. Also using USB plug for the strips makes it very easy to switch around since you can just plug whatever tool you need into your small powerbank and it runs.

Dennis you legend! How are you mate? Yes I thought about that. That would be a very elegant way to power them.

I just have about 43,879 18650's around, and use them for everything.

Hey Dennis, could you drop a link in here to the banks you were describing, that would be amazing thanks.

My first stuff was homemade. Always great to watch your videos. Helps feed the mind of new stuff to build.

Your enthusiasm is infectious, looking forward to the light bow. If i can get my head around how to make it I hope to use them with a Dementia group and if i can then make smaller ones with preschool children. Thanks for the education. C

Hi there. I’ll be uploading the Bow video today. I think it’s reasonably straight forward. Look if you’re making tools to help support others, that’s stunning and if you get stuck or need a hand, then make contact immediately and I’d love to help you get it over the line. That’s a beautiful thing to do. Peace.

Thanks, Dennis, this is such an awesome series, really well put together. A gentle reminder to get back into my RGB experiments. ESP2866's and Arduino's are cool but there will be code, but it's a really fun way to learn.

Hi Craig. Thank you, I am super happy you are enjoying. More to come. Yeah I am hoping to have some success with the Arduinos. I have some technical difficulties in my brain that sees me struggle with any math type stuff. But I am really going to try, hard.

Really interested to see what you do with the ESP development board. Would love to try it but don't know where to start.

Hi mate. Yes. That thing. I always get so excited when someone says, “dude, it’s so simple, anyone could do it”, and you look at them and buy it because you don’t want to admit there is a potato in your pantry that is smarter than you. So I might need to get the potato to help me out🤓

Thank you so much for sharing Dennis. Where are you getting your electronic parts from? Cheers Ray

Hi mate, i do chat about that in the next vid, making the bow. But all over the show really. Components like buttons, wire, 18650 batteries and holders from Altronics and Jaycar. Sometimes Amazon. But all of my RGB strip is from Aliexpress. Which is heaven for light. Let me know if there is a specific component you were thinking about. Thanks for stopping by mate.
