We don't do these on UA-cam anymore. We do them exclusively on The Lab now. www.mangostreetlab.com/the-lab
no please do them on youtube
Please make a series out of these critiques videos.. It really does help a lot. Watching other photos being told what is missing and what can they do to add to the photos to make it better is really encouraging. We can actually see where our photo skills at.
Always a treat watching your videos guys :D
Totally agree on this they pointed out the small little thing that everybody already seem to forget
i would love to see these like once a week
Anugrah Ramadhan this is exactly why I love it too. Please continue this series it's my fav
mantap djiwa
yes
Great video as usual! It would be interesting if you guys did one video critiquing your own photos. It could be critiquing your old work showing us what you have learned from those shoots, or just any photo you have taken where you wish you would´ve done something differently. I don´t know, might be cool :D
Great idea! I agree with you!
Thanks, hope they consider it haha
Ross Guzman yes this would be awesome!
Ross Guzman yup that would be great.. 👍👍
They should totally do it! I just looked through a bunch of photos I printed 10 years ago that I was very proud of at the time, and identified several ways to improve them.
Wow thank you for the kind words about my photo at 7:30!
Thanks for submitting a tight photo 👌
Dude that was an absolutely insane shot! Great work!
Cole Stoughton great shot.. 👌👌👌
Cole Stoughton do you have instagram?
MOsaab Ali I sure do! @colestoughton
I practically burst into laughter at 9:26! The way it flashed on the screen and you just said it was perfect. For some reason that just killed me.
MariahMazing Thank you haha! Would be really happy if you added a like to the same squrrel photo at this contest! Would mean a lot to me! uudised.tv3.ee/fotokonkurss/sugise-varvid/#e18b6f179b6a5a068a01655542f9b6de
Very helpful indeed to evaluate one's own skill in photography.
Those little things like objects that 'cut through' subjects are really helpful!
yeah and I'm going to try to play around with the sun behind my subjects more often, that pic was great!
I love the picture at 9:26. Definitely perfect!
Oaishe (my photo) thank you! Would be really thankful if you added a like to the same photo at this photography contest! This would mean a lot to me😊 uudised.tv3.ee/fotokonkurss/sugise-varvid/#e18b6f179b6a5a068a01655542f9b6de
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the kind words about my photo at 9:00 (: I'm glad you dig the reflections (:
Can't help it, I love the tones in these too :D
It would be cool if you guys did a "critique my feed" segment. Obviously it would appeal to people building social profiles but it would be really handy as a tool for cohesive portfolio development.
*wants to send in my photos but they're nowhere near as good as these*
Brad Daniels don't worry. I'm a beginner and my photos are probably below average but I still sent mine. Your's will be fine, too.
Brad Daniels ha ha me too
Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about the negative space and couldn't figure out how to fix it so thanks for the tips! Love the videos :)
Maybe you can do like a feature for little known Instagram photographers? I think that'll be cool.
That's a good idea.
LunaMoonlight95 agreed!
LunaMoonlight95 I love that idea!
3:47 was my favorite by far It told a story most of the others didn't.
I love the format of how you had the photo you were critiquing on one side and the video of you talking on the other side, instead of just showing the photo full screen and doing a voice over 👌👌 also great tips
Can you make a tutorial for toning?
I tremendously enjoy these critiques. You two pull out details in photos that I otherwise wouldn't have noticed at all, and that really helps me for planning photos of mine in the future. You should really continue to do this.
So many talented photographers *AND* so many great tones.
Please, please do these critique videos on a weekly basis! There's so much to learn from these.
Even if these videos are 16 hours long, I'd still watch them all the way through!
I am not a photographer what so ever. but watching all these people working on their craft is inspiring. I used to draw and loved drawing but stopped for some reason, now it's time to create another masterpiece. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Disagree with you on the second photo. More of a cinematic shot, if the focus was shifted to the building during recording that would make a beautiful environmental shot. As far as the still is concerned, personally I think it looks much better with the building out of focus, than the flowers would look out of focus. Of course, every opinion is different. Just giving my take. Thanks for the great content!
All opinions welcome here!
I think the fact that there's disagreement as to the subject shows why it's better to have just one in your shot
This Photography Channel Doesn't Waste My Time, Informative And Very Relevant At Citing Information !!!
I’m on my phone and the thumbnail shows before the video starts for like a second and the transition is perfect. I love how you used the first frame of the video and used it for the thumbnail, so cool!
I had a question about leading lines. In general in seems like leading lines are good, so why is it bad if a line goes behind the subjects head? Wouldn't that be one way to guide the viewer to the subjects face?
I find it to be a good way to bring the eye to a face. As long as it's not vertical lines "growing" out of a subjects head, a leading line going behind the head isn't bad to me. It's a personal preference
these really help people, do more! As someone who's never had any proper photography training or education I find that this sorta critiquing so useful
You guys were super nice about this and this was incredibly helpful! please continue to do this!
Even if none of this photos are mine, this constructive critiques have really helped me a lot. Now I'm more aware of the composition, the tones, the lines and much more other stuff that I didn't used to notice before since I've never had the chance to have a photography class. Please do more of this, it helps us all!
Constructive, structuring, artistic. You just won a subscriber. Thank you for sharing your passion so devotedly.
A series on the critiquing would be soooo helpful. A lot is learned from both of the critiquing videos. Could you guys also do a tutorial on editing on apps such as VSCO for us who can't afford Lightroom? Lol
I like these videos (and I hope you guys make a series out of them) because when the picture comes up I instantly critique it in my head, and so it's interesting to hear you guys say the same things I was thinking as well as things that I missed or didn't think of!
i love rachel's voice it's so soothing💙
Awesome! From this video, it was a great reminder to keep in mind the composition of the background, behind my subjects. I always get ahead of myself and start shooting, then notice those things while editing. A great reminder to slow down and set up the shot!
Your channel is pure gold!
I just discovered it today. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! ✨✨✨
Please keep this series going! It helps soooo much and I even sent in my own work too. Hopefully, you guys critique it in a future video! Thanks again for amazing content!
Love this series so far! Personally didn't think the background of the last one (at the train station) was as problematic as it was made out to be. I kinda liked how that center pole coming down through the top went to her head. Almost brought more attention to the subject for me.
Someone else said you should make a whole series out of this and I definitely agree! I feel like I learn a lot from these videos and they really help me to further analyze and question my own work.
Found you channel a few days ago and i fell in love. Loved every single video and learnt a lot too. Thank you for the great videos and i think you're probably the cutest couple on youtube! Excited to see more form you guys!
I love how you critiqued each picture with respect!
Good job
Love the critiquing videos :) as a student photographer it really helps! Thank you
I absolutely love the critique videos. They're so concise and effective.
Love all your videos as they are very informational. Critique segment of your videos are the best. Keep doing these guys. Awesome job.
photography with phone and the editing apps next please!
I promise you it's coming, but we don't have control over when it'll be released. We'll holler when it is!
Mango Street if possible, could you do android phones too? Most of the phone photography tutorials I've seen are for iPhones :(
Neha Dargar Snapseed is a great app that you can get for free on Android 😊
Tilde Bekaert Yup! Thank you :)
Try Mix app on your smartphone. That app is the Lightroom of smartphones.
These are some of the most helpful photography videos I've ever seen. Please don't stop this series. Could you guys maybe bring on a guest photographer to get different opinions?
Lovin' your composition tips. I can visualize how different each photo would look with your suggested changes. This is inspiring me to get out and shoot!
Love what you guys do! I think there is for sure something to be said about that pure passion and creativity to create something amazing with whatever gear you have. I've seen some absolutely incredible work on, what would be consider by some, garbage equipment. The lesson I learned from this video is don't let whatever gear you have hold you back. Don't let amazing gear be a crutch and assume you're gonna get kick butt images. And on the other hand don't let not having your ideal gear stop you from making dope images. Thanks again from the rad video guys! Much Love!
I just discovered your YT channel not long ago, so I obviously didn't summit a photo. Buuuut, I love how you both were so helpful and critical without being harsh. If had to choose someone to critique my work, you two would definitely be one of my choices.
Oh, and I'm also learning a lot from you guys!!! So, just let the record show, you're also teaching us professionals. Not just beginners and amateurs.
you missed tones once! 7:40 ;)
Dang!
Me good call.. i ave lisend for a mist but dont ear it.. haha
Joulio Photographe "earthytones" ;)
@Koen van Ginkel yeah ok.. i'm French so maybe i dint ear it
a
Please make a series for this. It's awesome
I love that you guys used to do critiques. So fun!
i really like these series of videos! also interesting to see the photos of other people from all over the world
9:26 I literally couldn't stop laughing
"this one is perfect"
*moves on without a second glance*
good cameras for beginners?
Amelia Weatherall Honestly..your phone
Amelia Weatherall iPhone 7+ tbh
Canon Powershot if you don't wanna use your phone
Well, I don't know your budget but my recommendation would be the Canon EOS Rebel T3i (or the newer Canon 1300d) Body with the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.
That lens will help you make your images look "professional" because you can get a blurry background. Right now, the combination (on Amazon) costs $400
I would recommend using Camera360 if you want to use your phone.
Do more of this. I've been shooting for more than 3 years and still I learned a lot. Thank you.
we do these exclusively on the lab now 🤘🏼www.mangostreetlab.com/the-lab
This helped me to reflect on my own photos and see what areas I can improve on, thanks! Hoping to be as masterful with tones as the photographers featured!
I think what would make this series better is to select on a favorite photo from the set that you've reviewed in each video as the top photo. It would give a more accurate depiction of which photo is superior from your perspective, and also give photographers a more healthy and respectful incentive to submit their photos to see how they rank up against the others in a friendly competition
Why I don't see this segment of yours before huhu, i love this huhu i love all your vids MSL
Ohmygosh, I learn so much from your videos😍😍 I even predicted what would you say on some photos😊
So I'm not a photographier or even aspiring to be one, but these critique videos are entertaining and insightful. Love your shit Mango Street!
Definitively learned a lot - thank you so much, the quality of your videos is incredible!
I love the flowers and the building, what she says about not knowing which one is the subject is true but i think that adds some mistery to it and i like it. Good job Ibrahim Iqbal
The photo of the squirrel... I love that so much! Absolutely incredible!
Continue this series for sure! Thanks yall
I really liked the tones in that one picture 😂👌 just kiddin, great video + great photos!
I'm getting into photography and even though these are none of my pictures the tips you guys gave really helped me and I'll be thinking about them next time I'm shooting, thanks!
9:26 "This one is... Perfect" 😂 love it!
Keep critiquing photos! It helps a lot. Thanks!
It´s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks!
honest question.
i don't understand why the horizon or any object behind the head is a bad thing. is it a problemor just their preference?
Please do more of this, I am learning a lot!
Yes! Silent Planet's Thomas getting it on that mic! Love That!
Insightful and thoughtful commentary, which I think is great considering the difficulty in critiquing someone's art. A lot to think about next time I'm out shooting. Thanks!
i really learn a lot from it. thanks for this series.
I really love your channel! Please post videos about wedding photography!!
I love these critiques they're very informative. I think it would be awesome if you guys also did a video where you edit the photos (with the photographer's permission) that you critique so you can show some of the ideas you have and then did a side by side comparison. :)
We do those sort of things in the lab 😏 www.mangostreetlab.com/the-lab
in art school we learnt that subjects dont need to be centered with the scenery and it makes the picture more dynamic
this is best way to improve photography, keep em coming
Love these videos! Super concise and easy to understand
2 words: More Often! I love the concept!
Great job once again! Thanks for this, it really helps a lot, it's really insightful.
"This one is perfect" was much funnier than it should have been.
please make this video every week, we need it to learn :D thanks
Please do more vids like this. This is really helpful! 👌
the commentary about the squirrel picture made me laugh so hard
3.46 thank you for the kind words ❤️
I love that photo so much! There is just something about it, i love how people outside are in a hurry and that gentleman is just sitting and reading newspapers. Love!!
Why can't i critique myself ... Through the whole video i was like judging the things correctly but when it comes to my own photo i can't do that 🙄 very helpful video though because i missed some things on my own
What about video critiques? I think that could be cool
No Egg Craig videos are just moving photos so Same critiques I gues
What I learned was the S shape is reeeeeeeeeally important lol great video guys
Another sweet video! Will you critique landscape photos in future videos or stick to mostly portraits/lifestyle?
1:46 is one of the sounds you dont wanna hear at 2am. Scared the shit out of me.
These are really helpful even if its other peoples photos. Please do more like these I'd love to send in one of my own ones
please make this a series. also I want a chance to send my photos in to be critiqued. great work!!
4:22 i don't now wht it about this photo but I love it... it feels like a painting, and there is so much meaning in it. My favourite it this batch. Good job Sheefy. oh and if you're reading this... where did you take the pic?
I LOVE how the "ands" got bigger. Such a typographical visual
i like before i watch..love u guys!!!
Love your guys videos! they help soo much
Thanks for doing these! Have you ever had issues with graininess coming out overall after exposing for the brightest parts of an image (sky, light on someone's skin, light coming in from a window, etc) and then increasing exposure in post? Would some sort of HDR or multi-capture be the solution?
I was waiting for your video !!! helped a lot !
I would love to see how you would edit other people's photos! For example, someone sends in a picture and you edit them
When something is great you should also say why is it that good, for example with the squirrel, it's not only about critiques but explaining what people did great is real helpful. Love this series, I just subscribed!
Could you guys do a video about how to do various tones in editing? I think that'd be super helpful for a lot of people here
You guys should make a video about ideas for pictures you can do at home like if you stuck inside
