The 'jingle' just before the game starts is, in my opinion, the most iconic sound of the arcades. It was just 'loud' and you could hear it from the other side of the arcade
Yeah the jingle at the beginning of both galaxian and Galaga send chills down my spine with nostalgia. More so then pac man or any other arcade game. Something about the sounds of these two games have really stuck with me.
I'm 55 years old and this was my favourite arcade machine as a kid. The intro tune takes me straight back to the amusement arcade in Smarts at Littlehampton a handful of 10p pieces and I was in heaven. Great memories, thanks for posting.
I was 13 back in 1979. We had just moved to great yarmouth over hear in the uk. It was amusment heaven and i loved it! Oh the joy of the sound of it all!!
Back in 1979, 1980 i was 10 yrs old and dominated the arcades in my area and scoreboards, flipping scores, and recall unlocking up to 3 Galaxip starfighters that would connect together. I was major addicted to Galaxian which led right into Galaga. 👾
Blessed is our Lord and savior my dear freind did you know that his name is holy and that loves you alot? that s why what about this to think about his love lets show him glory instead using o word with g its possible to give oppretunity to give thanks or blessing instead?
Just seen Galaxian game in a movie and reminds me of when I was addicted to it at school in '80s. Been on youtube and I'm buying one for £1400 - happy days!
me too. My dad used to take me to the arcades and watch as i spent the afternoon playing galaxian and then had a full on tantrum when we had to leave :D
I had the starting sound as my ringtone :-) Galaxian was the very first game that I've enjoyed in the arcades back then. Most of the time i just watch others playing all the arcade games like pacman, crazy climber, space invaders etc as I had limited allowance back then. But I did play galaxian enough to reach 14 flags as far as I can remember.
My buddy and I used to team up on the controls. I was the pilot and he was the gunner. It required obvious teamwork and timing to coordinate and be effective enough to "stay alive." (like Maverick and Goose before there ever was a Top Gun)
Awesome! I can't recall how many quarters I put into this machine, Galaga and Space invaders back in the day. Galaxian was one of my favorites and this looked and sounded like the deal deal too. I think I was pretty damn good playing it too, I'm going to have to build me a pi box!
Much prefer these 80s classic arcade games than what we have now. Missile command, tempest, asteroids, defender and gorf were among my favourites. Spent way too much time before school in the arcade.
This game had sounds that made me think of a theremin a little bit, and how that instrument was used a lot in old sci-fi movies. I figure the creators of Galaxian added these types of sounds for humor just as much as for giving that space alien feeling.
Wow. I played that game in a pub, at the age of 7 or 8. It was so fantastic cause the sounds were so brill for that time and the alien formation quite smooth and clever. I believe it was the first true multicolor shooter game in history. An absolutely classic and addictiv game, still today!
I bought one of these Galaxian pub table top games second hand in 1982 ex rental for £60 me and my Dad used it as our kitchen table for a while, brilliant fun.
@Jamez Replicade made a centipede and a tempest. seem really good quality. they're 100$ replicas. look and play identically to the original machines. only main difference is tempest has a dial, not a spinner, but from what I've heard it still plays well.
It's funny how the sounds bring all the memories back after nearly 40 years. The noise when you hit one of thoase yella ones is orgasmic for someone that doesn't get out much.
We played this every day for two years in the SMOKER'S room in Holmes Hall at Michigan State University. I sucked at it, but my buddy would go on and on and on... Thank you for posting this gem.
Late 70s early 80s i was 8-10... weekend trips to our caravan on isle of Sheppey... the clubhouse had this cabinet ALL my 10p went in it. Aaaaahhhn memories....ace time to be a kid. Thanks for the upload
This was one of the first early arcade games to be available in color. The Original Space Invaders and Asteroids were in Black and White. Namco had Capitalize on Taito's Space Invaders and reworked the A.I., allowing the enemies to move more freely instead of vertically and horizontally.
This is the oldest game I've ever played but I had a Namco collection game on DS. Still cool that I got to experience a game from the tail end of the 70s.
this was one of the very first arcade games to use colour graphics, it was quite a technical achievement at the time, especially when most of the arcade games from atari and exidy were using black and white graphics
I was eight years old in 1978. My dad took me to a pub one afternoon because there was something there he thought I might like. It was Galaxian.. I still remember it after all this time - it blew my mind! For some reason I thought the Atari home console came out after the Galaxian arcade machine, but apparently it was two years before?
Remember playing this and the bullets going through the attackers and wished it had rapid fire like GALAGA does where several shots could be fired. I just played this again tonight in a local Retro arcade, been a long time and got the highscore and I feel like I can do so much better if I play it more. Ah I'm hooked again just like the ole days.
I'm only 20 years old, who am I to feel nostalgic watching this video when I didn't grow up in the age of arcades, instead playing it on PS1 20-something years after the fact?
I cant believe this game is from 1979! While its sound is kind of grating, the visuals are still great looking, and enemy movement is incredible! I can't believe this and space invaders came out the same year. What a leap in technology! And yet space invaders remains the more iconic one
actally invaders came out in 78 and was written over 77. By the time anyone saw Galaxians it was 80 IIRC. Like in my memory there was easily 18 months between Space Invaders and Galaxians. The first colour ones were Galaxian, PacMan, AstroFighter, Donkey Kong..... Something like that
Tujunga, CA. 7-11 Corner of Foothill and Tujunga Canyon blvd. 1980...their machine was fast as hell, and the volume was LOUD! Great memories of candy, slurpees, and avoiding getting our asses kicked/our bikes stolen haha.
I played this the other night at a Flying J truck stop in PA. Back in '79 I was 18. This along with Pac Man and a few others were the main digital arcade games at the local sports bar. Pretty cool. This is being played too slow though, it moves alot faster if you fire quickly. :-) My mistake. I was playing Galga a more advanced version launched in 1981
Haha! Back in the day I had to skateboard or ride my bike 5 miles to play these games, not to mention work my ass off for my parents doing chores to earn the money to pay for them. Now you can play 100s of games without even getting out of bed... Thanks for the upload and the memories! REPLY
I used to play this as a child until the game stopped and I couldn't go any further, some number with alot of / all , ' 9's , millions ? Not sure . Would like to play again
I used to love this game. It was unbelievably exciting back in the day before we knew any better. Galaga was better though what with the double gun and the swerving bullets lol
Galaxians, gorf, Mr do, Mr dos castle, pac man, asteroids, defender, scramble, phoenix and vanguard where attack of the hawk men written by Freddie Mercury for the film flash Gordon is featured. Classic arcade games
This and "Galaga" are the two best games, but this was the first one from 1979, and then a year later, "Phoenix" was released, and it looked similar to this one, except the boss where you fight the mothership, and "Galaga" was a much better improvement than this game, and it was a sequel to this game.
Blimey I haven't seen this for decades. I once fell of the stool trying to avoid the reds and yellow ones. With a joystick or whatever they were called of course, impossible with buttons. same here! The local chippy had one installed in 1980, and so began my 40 year love of gaming. After that they got a 'Cosmic Guerilla' cabinet and another one who's name escapes me!
The 'jingle' just before the game starts is, in my opinion, the most iconic sound of the arcades. It was just 'loud' and you could hear it from the other side of the arcade
totally - can't think of anything better.
The booms are pretty loud as well. I played the 1-Up machine at Best Buy and I could feel the "explosion" from the joy stick.
What about pac man jingle
I did love that!
Yeah the jingle at the beginning of both galaxian and Galaga send chills down my spine with nostalgia. More so then pac man or any other arcade game. Something about the sounds of these two games have really stuck with me.
