Let's see it this way. Basically Churchill needed ammo made of bones. He couldn't use the European bones as he felt they were superior. So why not use bones of people far away and about whom his audience would not even bat an eyelid. That way he becomes a hero even though the bones used as ammo were those of innocent people whose lands his people invaded and enslaved. Clear and simple logical analogy based on facts. Nothing more. Nothing less

Winston Churchill was responsible for the Great Bengal famine that killed more than 3 million only in Bengal. That is just 1 state. That's a man who should have been tried for war crimes.
He had a part to play in it but it's hard to blame him alone and not factor in the weather from the previous year and the Japanese invading
I normally agree with Piers, though partly because he picks obviously extreme positions to attack. But in this case, I think his opponent made a good and nuanced case. There is no reason we should not call out glorified figures for their racism, sexism, or homophobia, without dismissing there much larger achievements. Heidegger joined the Nazi party (though did not support the war and there is a wide gap between his antisemitism and condoning outright mass murder), yet he was arguably still perhaps the greatest philosopher of the century. Harriet Beecher Stowe considered blacks inferior and separatism and repatriation the solution, but was still instrumental in ending slavery. Why should we not be able to recognise both? Besides, his argument that Churchill defeated white supremacism is specious in the extreme: he obviously did not fight Hitler because he believed in racial equality, but because he intendednto invade Britain.
Almost all historical heroes we venerate had a dark side by todays standards, let alone by those of social justice extremists. That is part of history. The logical extension of Piers argument is comparable to Central Asian apologists for Stalin, pointing to the narrative that he brought the region into modernity from destitute, nomadic decline. China still glorifies Mao for similar specious reasons. Both tyrants that, in terms of number of victims, leaves Hitler in the shadows. Fighting back against such apologia seems justified, but toppling status and rewriting history is of course not.

Typically the causes of a famine include supply side shocks including bad harvest, war time supply issues, which inevitably lead to rapid food price inflation. The causes of Bengal famine are much more complex and intertwined than just supply shortage.
In case of Bengal, the primary reason for the famine was shortages in Rice. A variety of factors led to the shortage, but most prominent among them was not supply shortage rather it was due to improper allocation of the available rice stocks. 1943 was a relatively bad year in terms of rice harvest (down 5% year-on-year), but not enough to cause a famine. What happened was a series of events which led to the disaster:
A relatively bad harvest in winter crop of 1942, led to supply shortages.
Occupation of Burma by Japan in 1942 resulted in restriction on rice imports from Burma.
Restriction on inter-state trade of rice and other food grains at the time further aggravated the issue. This was lifted temporarily for eastern states but then put back again as the rice prices in other states also began rising.
Hoarding of rice stocks by traders and farmers in anticipation of speculative rise in rice prices in future as rice shortage was becoming evident.
No inaction on part of British authority to import more rice from abroad to control the situation.
The event at the time was not declared as Famine, which would have allowed government to act on supplementary reserves. This was due to the fact that government didn’t have enough reserves to fulfill the demand.
The brunt of the famine was most born by rural Bengal, primarily landless agricultural labour. The elite and some working class in Calcutta, however, remained largely untouched by the famine as the British government implemented a policy to provide rice at fixed price to close to one million workers in key factories, in order to not affect the war.
Ignorant policymakers within India and in the British Parliament combined with local inefficiencies were the major causes of Bengal famine of 1943, rather than supply shortage.
Saying Churchill brought the Americans into the war is hyperbole. The Japanese bombing pear harbor and Germany declaring war was the real reason.
So true. Also, US President Roosevelt himself played a role. He wanted America involved in the war. He was going as far as possible politically to help the UK, leasing warships, supplying arms and munitions, arranging financial support (Lend-Lease), occupying Iceland and Greenland so that Germany could not take them, extending US patrols on the Atlantic, taking visible PR steps such as the Four Freedoms speech in January of 1941 and on and on it goes.
Roosevelt also put the screws on Japan, including the oil boycott that seems to have been a real factor in Japan deciding to attack Pearl Harbor.
Man, Piers Morgan sounds so insincere and bad faith here. He is just creating this straw man and attacking relentlessly, instead of actually engaging with what Afua Hirsch says.
Hirsch agrees that what Churchill did in WWII is admirable, remarkable, truly special. She also - rightfully - argues that Churchill personally carries a huge responsibility for the deaths of millions of Indians.
Churchill was an absolute hero in World War II. He also was an absolute racist who contributed to the deaths and suffering of millions in British colonies. I believe we as human beings are intelligent and capable enough to welcome both ideas at the same time and to see Churchill as he really was, in all his complexity.
I'm not particularly fond of Hirsch either, she comes from a highly privileged background and is a typical example of how class and family money trump race - but she is constantly posing as some British Angela Davis, oppressed due to the colour of her skin and saying nutty stuff about history.

I am a tall, white, North-European guy with an academic way of speaking. The longer I live, the more I see the many minor ways in which this influences how people treat me. Often to my benefit. So I am open to hearing from other people how they are treated. We human beings have funny ways of treating each other ;-)
I recently attended a book talk and interview with Afua Hirsch. She came across as intelligent, opinionated, respectful and generous with the people in the audience and someone that I would probably enjoy spending time with. It may be relevant to mention here.

Oh I think he knows the truth, he has never denied Churchill's racism and genocide against darker skinned people. He just does not care, and is only thinking of what the Brits got from Churchill as far as being enslaved by Nazi Germany goes. For most Americans, Churchill was nothing and they won the war for themeselves and rest of the world. For the rest of the world, Churchill was no different to Hitler. For Britian and Piers Morgan and maybe a few other irrelevant, tiny European countries, he was a hero.

The main commentator should accept fact that persons who do A levels of history in England do not know an iota of coloniialism history. That is not taught in england. Check it out for urselves. I don`t think it is for Afua Hirsch to denigrate Britain`s greatest hero.
I don't wanna diminish Britain's role in WW2 but it's the Soviets who defeated Hitler, not the Americans, nor British, nor French. And when they finished with Hitler, they turned around and absolutely smashed the Japanese. Yet NATO countries, in their hubris, never acknowledge this, rather downplay Russia's role.
But back on the topic.
Churchill was great for the English, absolutely awful for everyone else, including the rest of the UK. He's one of the most awful people to have walked the Earth ever. Period. He even extradicted some of his staunchest war allies to the communists when they asked. Disgusting.
What bullshit is this. It was the Soviets who made the early Nazi victories when they carve Europe into spheres if influences, in utterly depraved and cynical imperialism.
While I'm no fan of Churchill to say that the Soviets beat Hitler is not accurate. Both the UK and the USA supplied the Soviets with arms and ammunition and approx 50% of explosives used by the Soviets were supplied by the UK and the USA.
Not to be forgotten is the huge bombing campaign conducted by the RAF and the US army Air corps devastating German industrial might. Without the airiel bombing by the RAF and the US army air corps the war in the East would have been completely different.
Being on these air raid missions was very high risk. RAF bomber command personnel got a fry up of bacon and eggs before every mission as it was more than likely their last.
None of the general population saw a real egg for years being supplied with powered eggs for nutrition rather than taste.
US army air corps had to do initially 25 missions and their war was over later increasing to 30 missions.
Not a lot made it to 25 or 30 missions.
The Soviets did dam all bombing from the air on German industrial facilities.
All allied nations played their part.
@@briancarton1804 In a sense, you are correct, and the Western Allies did fight in Africa but their role is simply not comparable to the Soviet role.
And you forget two key points:
- the equipment that was supplied was sold, not gifted. The US emerged richer and their huge economical problems were ultimately solved, while the Europeans were utterly devastated
- the Germans were running out of oil, and that's what slowed them down and enabled the Soviets to achieve superior numbers. They went from Blitzkrieg in France to Donkeykrieg in USSR. The Allied bombings were of little consequence, as said by the German generals.
Again, men have died for the cause on all sides. It's just that the Russian death toll is 1/4 of the total WW2 deaths, including the all the genocide. Think about that for a second.
@@thewildchimp The Soviets never paid their allies for war materials supplied. While there might have been sold stickers on the boxes the Soviets never paid the bill .
In regards to the high Soviet death toll a large part of that was due to Stalin's disregard for the value of other people's lives throwing men into futile battles they were not prepared for and having lots of his own men executed on a whim.
Mr Putin is much the same sending ill prepared boys into battle equally ill equipped. To him other people's lives are cheap.
Another reason for the high Soviet death toll was the Germans treated the Soviets much worse than they did the Americans or British.
Like wise the Soviets treated the Germans much worse than the British or Americans did as a result the German casualty rate was much higher on the Eastern front.
Stalin was always whining on about a second front. Did Stalin need glasses to see the maps where the British and Americans were fighting in North Africa and later Italy.
What Stalin really wanted was a third front.
In regards to the German Generals saying the bombing didn't make much of a difference I don't know which Generals said that but they were talking shite. The constant bombing disrupted manufacturing of all materials of war leaving them short of aircraft in particular. The fact that the USA and Canada could manufacture without interruption made a huge difference to Britain post Dunkirk. The British left most of their heavy equipment behind and were able to build up supplies quickly from across the Atlantic.
American industrial might was a huge factor in the defeat of Germany.
Lol battle of the Atlantic was mainly fought by Britain and cost the Germans more resource than all thier tanks and ground vehicles combined , that includes materials to make them not just to run them

They did the majority of ground fighting against the German's, but were heavily supplied by the British and Americans, 30% of the tanks at the Battle of Moscow in 41 were British Matildas and Valentines. 3000 Hurricane fighters were sent to the Soviets as well.
The strategic bombing campaign stopped German supplies, reinforcements and equipment going to the Eastern front.
Let's not forget as well the British and Americans where fighting the Italians, Vichy French and Japanese at the same time.

Hussein Suhrawardy and the Japanese caused the Bengal famine. Hussein Suhrawardy made a profit selling grain all the way through the Bengal famine. At the time most Hindu's blamed Hussein Suhrawardy for profiting and causing the starvation in Bengal. The Japanese caused a similar famine in 1945 in Vietnam.

He did what he had to do to keep his country alive. As an indian he needed a milking cow for his war so he took us as one.

IMO Churchill is a War Criminal, he is fine from the UK standpoint, he saved the UK. From an Australian and Indian standpoint he was happy to fight to the last Australian and Last Indian. He went ahead with the Gallipoli campaign even though it was shown to be stupid and unwinnable before he launched it and sent 1000's to their deaths for zero outcome. In WW2 he let Singapore fall and in the process sent the HMS Prince of Wales to the bottom! He refused to release Australian Troops to defend Australia against the Japanese who where busy bombing Darwin and sinking ships up and down the eastern Australian seaboard. So sure thing he was great for the UK, he was not so great for the rest of the Empire.
