MTB Derbyshire: Cut Gate Path (With Bonus Heather)

- This is a pretty stunning trail in any conditions, but I have to say that I haven't done it in such good conditions as these in quite some time. Throw in a shed load of summer purple flowering heather and you are onto a winner. Truly gorgeous scenes!
This route varies a little from my normal version for these parts. The standard one goes all the way down to the bridge, up the cobbled climb then around Langsett reservoir before coming back up to North America to return the same way. Here I cut across right at North America before Langsett, then right again to rejoin Mickledon edge at the steps part way along. Upon returning to Slippery Stones.I took the slightly longer "other side" of the three reservoirs back to Fairholmes, just for a change.
Such a classic route with two brilliant descents. I have edited this film to focus on these two highlights.....be wrong not to really.
The route on Komoot:

One of my favourite routes in The Peak. (On a good day) ….
The worst ( on a bad day ) !!
Thanks for the vid!
Ha ha! Yep, done both as well. 🤣 that oast descent back to Cranberry Clough is a bit nice....almost in any conditions.
Ace!
Looks lovely, each time I’ve rode Cutgate, it’s been like a swamp.
Not this time.....like a heather ridden joy centres ,😎
Two great descents! Really tough going in the middle though! Great riding Jonathan! 👍
Cheers Ant. The middle part has quite a bit going on but difficult but keep good consistent pace on.
Classic cut gate, decent pace too, great video Jonathan 👍🏻
Yep enjoyed that return descent. Such good conditions too.....makes a change 🤣
Great video at a nice time of year with the Heather out. At least you didn’t loose a pedal this time lol.
It holds some memories does that trail 😜
Bit better conditions than when I did this one with you 🙈 Great video mate, the heather is just stunning!
Just a tad 🤣🤣🤣 best conditions I've ever ridden it I think.
An absolute of a stunner day! Nice video! Lovely trail, bust be nice to bomb down it. I tried to have a good ride today too but unfortunately step wrong way and fell into a canal on my back while bike fell on me so I had to call it bit early. Anyway it is nice to be out and about! Stay safe and more videos please!
Sounds like you've had quite an adventure there. Hopefully all found and dried out 🤣 thanks for the comment, it's a great place to ride up there but hard earned those descents.
@@MTB_Derbyshire 🙏 thanks, all good… mostly. Looking forward to your next video
Great video mate. I'm still to do Cut Gate, looking forward to it 👍
It's probably not your normal stuff but the two main descents are really good. Cheers Jason 👍
Isn't it too xc for you Jason? 😜
Yeah I’ve only done it twice and enjoyed it. It’s got a bit of everything. Wet or dry it’ll still be good to ride.
Definitely doable in all conditions now they've sorted out the big of doom. I'd still leave it for the drier months though 😎
@@MTB_Derbyshire would’ve been great today with the rain it would’ve been like riding down a stream
@@twowheels4689 done it in some pretty dicey conditions 😜
Need to do this route 👍
Damn right. ... it's a classic!
Great stuff mate, that lens clean was a bit dicey 😂
I like to live dangerously 😜😎
Cracking video as always 👍 don't suppose you have a gpx or similar for the route? I'm mostly lost around the peaks, other than the Ladybower classic 😅
Komoot link is in the description....downloadable gpx available through there I'm sure. To be honest easy route ...head north from howden reservoir get to langsett turn around 😎👍
Nice ! I’d enjoy that if I still had an MTB .
Thanks Julie 😎 Never too late.....Plenty on Facebook market place 🤣
@@MTB_Derbyshire you referring to n+1 ??? Lol
@JuliePhelanExplore sadly I'm only allowed one bike at a time 🙄🤣
@@MTB_Derbyshire noooooooo!
I know, terrible eh.....unless some bike company decides to offer me a long term loan 😜
Great video. Best conditions I've seen it on video. What date did you ride it? Been working up the experience and courage for this (on a hardtail). Tempted to go for it next week as weather forecast looks mint.
Best I've ridden I reckon...and I've ridden it a fair few times over the years. This was Aug 17th but it's not been too rainy since and as you say looks decent weather next week. It'll be running prime. Hardtail will be fine only the middle bit and the last part of the return to Howden reservoir is rocky. The rest is fine on a HT. The previous visit before this, two mates had HTs (and awful conditions) no worries 😎👍. Let me know how you get on 👍
Thanks for the lovely comment btw 😎
Rode it a few days ago. Good stuff, super physical. Tried the hard line down Cranberry Clough but it had started raining at he top and was solo so bottled the very steepest couple metres of rock steps 😂
All pedal pins in tact, good ol' Loctite thread locker.
@@anneslambert3369 pedal pins are something I hadn't thought about until recently. I got my first flat pedals in about 30 years. Lost about 3 pins first ride 🤣🤣🤣. That last descent can get pretty wild in the wet
Is there new rock paths going through the boggy bit, I read somewhere a while ago they was going to lay a new path there?
Yes. They did the work a couple of years ago now. There's two new sections with slabs over the really boggy sections. It's so much better.
How long would you say it takes to do the there and back loop? I've only ever done it one way then on to something else
Well according to strava this ride was 2hr 53m . Komoot said 2hr 40. Obviously depends on the exact route you take. I came back on the other side of the reservoirs. It would have been a little quicker coming back the same way I went up. However if your route takes you the other side of Langsett it's going to make it a 3hr plus ride. Worth every minute whichever route I reckon 👍
Do love abit of cutgate, nice riding pal 👍
Cheers mate! It's got that out there feel ....until you see the main road. 😜
