    As a guy who doesn’t fish for money, I fail to see a reason to always change hooks on every lure. I use mostly 6th sense and Rapala cranks , and feel both come with quality hooks.

    I am particular about my hooks, used to switch almost everything out to Owner ST 36 stingers, just lose so many less fish on those, however I have found Hayabusa 930s that I have developed some confidence in, as far as split rings, I never had an issue with any split rings until this fall when I caught a 15lb striper, I got it in the boat but saw the back split ring on my lipless was completely stretched out so narrowly escaped that disaster , btw I don't change out my vision 110 hooks, Katsuage hooks are like velcro , I have caught 7+ and several 6+ on those hooks , however I did bend out the hooks on 5+ at Chickamauga a couple weeks ago but that was my fault trying to stop it from pulling drag , love these videos

    Not only do I change hooks, I check every one (trebles, jigs, drop shot, etc) I have tied on before I leave home. I sharpen them if they are not sticky sharp with a Buck Knives hook sharpener.

    The Owner hook that I like is the ST-36. It’s a round bend. It was recommended a while back on TB. I think I’m going to try making some braid ones though. Especially for topwater and maybe some lipless.

    I can remember throwing baits with bronze hooks or just cheap thin wire hooks and after a couple few fish I'd lose one swinging them into the boat or one would pull off and I'd have a hook flexed out. I'd just bend them back in place and go back to fishing completely clueless. That's not as big of an issue these days but it's something that stuck with me over the years and now if it's a bait I'm throwing on tournament day it's going to have good hook and depending on how the fish is getting the bait dictates EWG or round bends but regardless I generally up the hook size to the biggest the bait will handle. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

    Thanx Tyler. I stayed with EWGs on my chankbaits but came to the same conclusion as you with the top waters. When it comes to crankbaits I would rather have 1 EWG barb in a fish than 1 round bend treble. My opinion! EWGs that fish is in the boat.

    Love the video. Could you do a video on choosing the right size hook for the lure, changing the split ring and hook, and disposing the old hooks?

    Great video, going through details in the video on the brands and sizes based on different lure types would be useful in the future!

    Great video. I was losing a lot of fish on treble hook baits. Went to the EWG style and solved the problem. I miss a few but once I hook them they usually come to the boat.

    What is the best split ring pliers to use I have a couple sets and don’t like either one?

    in reference to breaking hooks while using pliers... have you tried doing a plasti-dip on the jaws? plier jaws can sometimes scratch the metal of the hook and introduce what's called a stress riser point in the metal.

    I have bought two split ring pliers. I'm still not in love with either of them. What split ring pliers do you prefer?

    • @paulstuartwilson485
      @paulstuartwilson485 9 місяців тому +1

      I bought a cheap set of split ring pliers and used a couple of files on them to make them thinner where the splitter point is and both sides of the splitter point tips. Hope this helps. 👍🇺🇸

    I was hoping someone would bring up something other than the hooks on a crankbait. I know the hook is what snags the bass and is what he or she wishes to shed while performing the dance of goodbye as you reel it in, but no one seems to understand, accidentally I'd say, that those hooks are attached to other metal items that can fail. You mentioned the slip ring, which seemingly never gets any press. The fact that hooks can break and bend under pressure. One thing I'd like to add to your list, and feel free to throw rocks at me if I have overstepped or "hijacked" your topic thread, but the piece the slip ring is attached to, and, the ring the crankbait is tied to can pull loose overtime. Also, another tiny bit of metal that doesn't get much press, are swivels. They aren't exactly industrial grade strength themselves. Any information as to what kind of swivel you recommend?

    Tyler, can you recommend a treble hook kit or large multi pack of your favorite brand? I prefer Gamakatsu but not sure if they offer them in a large pack. You may do that further in the video as I am only 2:26 into this video but if I dont ask now I will forget. 😂😂
    Ok, you did give your favorite brands. Lol!!!! Thank you for that! Now, how do you feel about double split rings on the treble hook to prevent fish from shaking loose?

    @tylerberger I have a question about changing hooks. Many lures advertise they use the upgraded version of trebles. Whether it's triple grips or fusion 19 already. Are they a lower quality than the separately sold ones? Is there a need to change them?

    • @TylerBergerFishing
      @TylerBergerFishing  9 місяців тому +1

      That’s where the 90% of lures you need to change hooks for. Baits like the Berkley baits that already come with fusion19s…I don’t worry about changing until I catch a lot of fish on them

    • @jackhammer9622
      @jackhammer9622 9 місяців тому

      Thank you for responding. The 90% is what concerned me. I typically change certain brands of lures or lure types automatically. Like I use EWG style on lipless and anything made by Pradco I automatically change. Thanks aging for all the great content. I point everyone new to fishing that I come across to your channel.

    I have started to take the metal orings of and tying my trebles on with 65# braid. It takes away the leverage fish use. I have seen a good uptick in landings.

    You or tactical bassin should do an in depth hook video by the bait. So a few jerkbait setups, squarebills, glide baits, top waters and just give some suggestions for each.

    Chucked a Rapala crankbait into Lake St Clair once (actually first ever cast with that bait) it gets hammered I’m hooked up, but for only like 4 seconds. Reeled in the bait w/o a front treble or split ring.
    I frequently change split rings and hooks out, but I didn’t that time.

    How about doing a giveaway video with all your crap hooks you change out. I’d sure use them for catfishing. That’s what I do with my cheapo hooks.

    I recently had to kill a young bass that got a treble hook down the mouth and eventually in a gill as we were trying to get it out. I still feel horrible about it. I can't use the old vintage Mepp's red dot again even without feeling evil. planning to change to single or dual hooks soon.. P.S I know it is a pain, but I keep a small hook sharpening stone in my tackle box, It takes only a few seconds to check and prime hooks when swapping lures,
