- Producer Kenny Beats and Atlanta rapper Key! (who recently collaborated on the ‘777’ project) pulled up to Good Records to take the Rhythm Roulette challenge. KB tied a purple bandana over his eyes and selected three records: The Cure ‘Hoover,’ Robin Kenyatta’s ‘Gypsy Man,’ and The Rick Curtis Affair. After dropping the needle all over the place, he snatched a few fire breaks. “I got one thing from The Cure, and I got three off that crazy gypsy-looking dude with the blonde hair, but nothing really from the Sonny & Cher-looking guy. This one seems fire…” Kenny Beats, who has worked with A$AP Ferg, Ab Soul, Smoke DZA -to name a few-soon cooked up an ill trap beat for Key! to bless with some filet mignon bars. I love that quote by Kenny Beats, cuz it's so true -- by just adding a textural/ambient sound in the background of your beat cleverly, you can make 'something really simple seem intentional.'
plus it makes shit thats crazy sound more like an actual song in a weird way. like kennys song with JPEGMAFIA, "Puff Daddy". shit has some bizarre ambient sounds but it goes

I'm sick of seeing all of these boom bap producers complain in the comments. "It doesn't sound like J Dilla so it's trash"
For one there's only one Dilla & no can imitate him even if they tried (which many beat makers have tried many times), second people are complaining because this young generation lacks style diversity & overall talent. There are many young beat makers (DJ Dahi, Scoop Deville, Frank Dukes, etc.) who are talented & from time to time come with some great material but too many times this generation's music sounds careless, lazy & unoriginal. And that's why older cats complain because in the past that shit was unacceptable. The bar is lower & it's OK with your generation & if you really love this culture that's frustrating.
Travis Pearson I can understand that but I'd say the music out now and top producers are a reflection of what the people want (mainstream) and what's the most marketable. If you look you can find some incredible music but it's a shame most people don't want to hear it
nobody is saying it has to be exactly like dilla however have some standards for good music lol this beat was below mediocre and the rap was a joke lol
Neh there is a demand and target field for people who want boombap style but its way easier to create and market that junk the mainstream wants
Alex the rap was terrible hahaha. Key! has some decent songs from a few years ago but this was just bad. I can see the demand for boom bap but not on a large scale because hip hop might lean more towards electronic music in the next few years
