It's former colonies are major world leaders and it's language is spoken all over the world. Just an incredible and long history.

Thanks JD. Breathtaking. I do wonder if a 23 year old Roman Soldier would find enough "diversion" from their daily tasks in such a remote area. The current climate (and the green tableau) suggest that Gortex rain gear would have been prized. 😊

@TheHistoryUnderground ... JD, spectacular and outstanding historical series! Hadrian's Wall is a site to behold. PBS did a magnificent documentary on Hadrian's Wall, and might I suggest the director's cut extended unrated dvd / blu ray of King Arthur from 2004. I believe you'll find these to be very helpful in your understanding of the Far Eastern Roman Empire Outposts. I really hope you continue with these types of world history series!
Those sheep were equally as historic they were believed to be brought over by the Vikings.they are called herdwick sheep from old Norse herdvyck meaning sheep pasture. They are famed for the ability to live in the worst terrain , like the highland cow they can survive bad winters on the hills. Their meat is more gamey tasting than normal lamb and has a lot more fat, lovely roasted till crisp, salted and a little mint sauce!! Lovely. 99% of them are limited to Lakeland.
HI JD, well actually getting places like "Hardknot Fort" at Boot is always a fun challenge to have a go at. The challenging road you travelled on through the middle (these are known as Wrynose and Hardknot passes) of the lakes is one I enjoy driving when I go visit every few years and yes they are a challenge. The site of that fort is spectacular and you see it from the top of the pass as the road steeply descends into the Esk valley. Britain was written about as being a misty mysterious place, almost seen as "exotic". You make a point that Roman's were a significant presence here in the UK for 4 centuries, but not all the structures were in continuous operation during the whole occupation. On my recent holiday I revisited the shore fort at Porchester near to Portsmouth; which was one of four later fortifications built by Rome in the UK along the South and East coasts. they are truly massive fortifications and I have seen 2 of them on my travels. The one at Porchester even has a Norman Castle in one corner (reusing part of the structure) and a Village Church in the other (which has some CWG graves in the graveyard).....and still has space for a cricket pitch inside! Anyway glad you enjoyed your visit to a less well visited section of the English lakes

JD. I can understand your frustrations. For five years, I was stationed in Okinawa. I came so close to running over pedestrians and hitting other vehicles.
Hey man another great video! Its a good change of pace in regards to topic. It seems like you're very knowledgeable about the Roman Era in Britain. Where do you learn your information from? Also, how do you learn it? Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Can’t help but think of all the farms and churches built with Roman stone.
That is some amazing country. Thanks for sharing.
Great video again JD such a beautiful part of England
Excellent video. Thank you!!
As a native to the country who is very familiar to those roads I can only say well done for managing the roads in the lake district, specially the route up to the HardKnott Fort
Welcome to Cumbria! My home county. Hope you had a chance to visit Carlisle and its castle. Keep up the great work!
Next time!
Great episode thank you! Pleased you're enjoying our country and it's history if not the way we drive. I walked parts of Hadrian's Wall and the Roman forts the other side of the country in the Northumberland area and again that is unbelievably beautiful. I live in the South East of England where the scenery isn't as dramatic but there are great Roman ruins where I live, in fact I live in area of the first Roman capital of Roman Britain. Safe travels, looking forward to the next episode.
EXCELLENT video JD!
There is so much we dont know, seems like the older we become the more knowledge we obtain about so many cultures.
That would be amazing to visit
I could've stayed there for days.
Actually, the most well-preserved Roman bath is in Bath, England, in the Southwest part of the country. I highly recommend a visit.
Been to Ireland, beautiful, unlike anything I have ever seen. The driving is a bear, narrow roads, sheep and left side driving.
Would love to visit there sometime.
