You are absolute correct. FDR wanted to take all of the countless utilities into public ownership, owned by the Federal Government. He caught so much hell when the TVA was completed. The robber barons cried foul because the Federal Government owned and operated the electrical in the TVA. So, FDR compromised by getting the states to set up these state utility control boards or commissions. Some are called Public Utility Boards, or Corporation Commissions, whatever they are called, these boards are set up to monitor these utilities so they do not price gouge, like they have in Arizona. The trouble today is, these people on these boards are elected people, they have campaign PACs. It is completely legal for companies to put monies into these campaign PACs. What was it about 5 years ago, APS put $650,000 into the states attorney's campaign PAC. I am sure most Arizonans remember that. I paid $28,000 for a solar system in 2019 on my roof. I did this to augment my electric bills. Now, APS has bought their permission to buy my electricity for 30% less than what I pay. This last year, in 2024, my augmented pay from my solar went down 30%, and my rates went up 11%. So that means, there is a 41% difference between what I produce and what I pay for electric. All of this was approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission. It looks like getting elected as States Attorney or being on the Corporation Board is a road to riches on the backs of the 99.99% of Arizonans. The state should take APS out of Pinnacle Groups' hands. I would love to see this happen. It looks like APS will be getting all of the power peoples' solar systems generate for free. What a happy day it would be if the CEO and Boards of Directors of APS and Pinnacle Group were arrested, stripped of their assets and citizenship, banned from this nation forever, deported to the Hauge on a container freight ship to stand at the World Court as non-citizens of the USA and charged with exploitative and genocidal profiteering crimes against humanity. APS has the blood of numerous people who could not pay their utility bills on their hands. They can't do that anymore, now the next step is having the state of Arizona take control of all privately owned electric in the state and throwing the ACC in the toilet.
@@Rob-xv6bx The Tennessee Valley Authority is the nation's largest public power provider and is 100% federally owned, which means no private citizen profits from it. It's all tax payer funded. In Canada, the government owns and controls the utility companies. That would be water & sewer, gas, electricity, garbage pickup. If the PRIVATE EQUITY or privately owned companies own the utilities, they can charge you WHATEVER THEY WANT. Our utilities are very very reasonable. We also have free healthcare which is paid thru our taxes. Greetings from Canada
That's not strictly true. They may own a stake in many utilities but they aren't always the majority stakeholder. Hydro One in Ontario is only partly owned by government. Tho I concur that we are much better regulated than Arizona, regulations are 'bad' in many Republican 'big government' citizens and never for the reasons they should think it's bad lol
Well no it depends on the province. Here in the province of PEI privately owned Maritime Electric itself owned by Fortis owns the power system but in Summerside the town owns it. Fortis owns a lot of power companies across Canada. During hurricane Fiona poles here snapped later it was found out no power line tree maintenance had been done for 40 years! Yes 40 years! Plus many poles were also over 40 years old. My parents home has had the same power pole for 53 years. And the regulator here IRAC is like the ACC a bunch of yes men who give Fortis/Maritime Electric whatever they want. Now they want smart meters in to charge different rates at different times of day on demand or surge pricing.
@dg-hughes same. I live in a small town in Ontario. Our pole hasn't changed in 43 years at least. Our town owns our power company but it's supplied by another company, and neither have kept up improvements. We have weekly, sometimes several a week power flickers or outages. It's regular enough that I bought a back up generator for sump pump, fridge. Rates are decent, I have no complaints there. We also get charged for peak times. When you demand "green energy" you have to bear the costs of those demands. While you demand we reduce our carbon footprint, you let places like China crank out more carbon to make those cheaper solar panels, batteries, etc. When you get your "regulation", be prepared for those rolling blackouts when it's 117 degrees outside, hopefully you don't see what California did when the state had to come in and bail out the power companies that teetered on bankruptcy after "regulation".
Here in Arizona we barely have started to put solar power generator cells over the top of the canals. This not only generates electricity, but keeps the water from evaporating. The wider problem is that they bought a modern Ryan Homes house in a desert. These conglomerates from out of state came into Arizona and built homes that are completely incompatible with the climate of Arizona. AC Units simply DO NOT work well in most of the state, and the building codes for residential homes really need to be improved.
Yeah, they might just help drive Arizona's version of what California saw in the late 2000s. Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.
All those AZ Commissioners seem to be suffering from a conflict of interest and should be voted out.
Here in Arizona we barely have started to put solar power generator cells over the top of the canals. This not only generates electricity, but keeps the water from evaporating. The Middle East has been doing it for decades. One hundred years ago we had more citrus farms and trees and it was much cooler. Now Phoenix is a big sea of cement and blacktop.
Yup. It used to be such a wonderful place. Now it's a concrete jungle in an oven. I miss the Arizona of my childhood. AC ruined one of the most beautiful places in the world, in my opinion.
Please remember that walnut, almond and citrus trees suck up a lot of water that comes from scarce water supplies. Furthermore, the land has dropped by 40 to 50 feet because underground water is depleted. It may have been cooler, but at what cost?
@@LisaGardnerLandialuckily I live in the very rural high desert unincorporated area of So. Cali. Common sense said to me that AZ and the Coachella Valley were going to end up the way Sedona did….so in the early 90s I moved from Palm Desert up to Landers (outside Yucca Valley).

@@Siskos-pn7nd walnut and almonds were not grown in the lower deserts. And only a small amount of citrus. I have been in the California desert since the 70s. It was always agricultural. Mostly seasonal crops and grapes.
The problems AZ faces are non desert landscaping, covering every square inch of desert with concrete, too high of a population for a desert area….and houses that are too big.
If the batteries that are used to store power from residential solar panels become cheap enough, AZ homeowners might be able to go off-grid in large numbers. Wall Street investors for the utilities would hate it.
Having personally paid those rates as a student in Arizona, none of this surprises me. Gas + electric are required to function in modern society, their provision should be a right and utilities must be publicly owned for the public freaking good! Also, APS rates were even worse than Unisource when I was there, sad to see that it's only gotten worse...
Indeed... 😢
The hard part is, that big investors wont invest in utility markets where they can't make as much money. So when limiting potential ROI, less money will flow into the state, and as such, there will be less for other public works. BUT it will be temporary, and greed will eventually give-in. Rate payers save money for a time, but it requires indirect related costs. I think it's worth it, as someone who's lived in AZ, NV, and now CA.

Modern homes in the West are built the way they are (shitty) based on historically cheap energy. Energy is no longer cheap. If a home is designed and built with some actual thought put into it (orientation, thermal mass, materials, etc.), energy usage is miniscule.
The pain hasn't gotten bad enough yet for home builders and local planning and zoning boards to make any meaningful changes. They are often the roadblock to real progress.

I live in Europe where they have been tightening energy efficiency related building codes for decades. You can't buy or sell a home without an extensive report on just how energy efficient, or inefficient the place is. As a result places labeled F (you know the system, it's just how students are rated) nowadays might simply not sell anymore. That is till a developer hovers up a whole block of them to tear down and build A rated homes that command up to a 50% premium because they are 'insulating' the owner against a lifetime of energy price fluctuations by being basically energy neutral.
But it takes method, every decade or so you give the industry and the market time to grow into the next round of tightening up the codes. It takes about that long for the methods to be established, workforce to be trained and your average real estate buyer to see the need for things. The war in Ukraina and the way energy prices shot up overnight was an eye opener for many that were on the fence.

Then randomly over the last 3-4 years many states are seeing these ridiculous, life changing, some becoming homeless increases to utilities costs while the higher ups rake in millions? Doesn’t make sense. Why has power been fine for decades and suddenly need to increase? No power company should be privately owned. All should be publicly owned. That would help 100% for starters.

Slightly older homes build using cinder blocks, with large shade overhangs on all their windows, and cooled with swamp coolers aren't going to see anywhere near the electrical demands than a "modern" house with too many exposed windows, thin poorly-insulated homes, and undersized AC units that weren't intended to be used at humidity levels below 10%.
