I stopped half way through this video and scroll back to the start three or four time just to make sure I have heard this M5 v8 pop and bang in the corrected way it should sound
For many months thru this video put me to sleep and this wakes my up. Once drove the same beast. The owner said : let me introduce god. After the first 100 yards i shout loud oooooooh my goooooooooood 😂
My God, this sound is just... Actually, I don't know, I just fall in love actually ! e34 are great cars, but with this engine they are pretty rare here :/
9 years later... wondering if its literally just the stock resonator... most people keep the cats but replace the resonator with an xpipe, and replace the muffler with straight pipes. seems like an interesting setup
At this point in time, I don't even remember any longer if I still had the resonator or not. Out of all the cars I've had since, this one is still my favorite and still the only one I miss.
F*CK i love it when you ring the neck out of this thing after the T section. Every time I watch this I want an E34 LE, with side exits dumping just infront of the rear wheels. Love diesel 4wd's but damn they don't sound this good
DanniV8 would you recommend a e34 540i as a first car or e39 540i? Im considering one love e34's body and exhaust note but dont know about reliability and love e39's for the power and reliability.
Captian Stiggy Short answer, I've owned both and I still can't decide which I liked better. As a first car though, I'd go for an E39. They are safer, more user friendly and cheaper in the long run. Although based on my personal experience, the E34's are more reliably. But that's only because the only V8 E34 I've had has been very well maintained during it's 21 years on this planet. Long answer is way too long for comments, but if you're interested in more details of my experience in owning both types, feel free to send me a message!
DanniV8 thanks for the advice, but one thing I heard about e34's are you want one that was recalled back then, your engine clearly sounds like it was recalled if it runs that great, but what about on gas and insurance? Dont e34's weigh less and not need to be pushed as hard as heavy e39's? And insurance and maintain costs what wins on that?
Captian Stiggy Sorry for late reply. But yeah, if you're in the US you want to look out for the recalled ones. You should Google "BMW M60 Nikasil problem" for information on that. My car has always been in Europe so the Nikasil problem didn't affect it and it's therefor still on it's original engine. As for the weight, E34 and E39 540i manuals differ in about 100kg. Which isn't that much. The E39's have a 4.4 with 440nm torque, 40 more than the E34. Gas is not that much, but still it's a 4 liter V8 so in town it gets terrible mileage. Highway is a lot better, around the 9.5 l/100km mark. Depends heavily on driving style. I've only had automatic E39's and their fuel usage is very similar to the E34's. So little difference it's not worth a mention. In my country, insurance is based weight and power ratio, so it's a little bit more expensive for the E39 but again, not that much to mention. Having owned both, I find the E34 to be more of a enthusiastic drivers car, while the E39 is more like a cruiser. I would not like to own a manual E39 540i. If I'd want a manual E39, I'd go for an M5.
Thinking of doing a Y-Pipe off my stock downpipes and straight back into some tips. Any tips i should know or anything i should look out for? (same car btw)
Hi Tim. Motor is stock. It's a '93 so the intake has velocity stacks inside, which were removed in '94 and later models. I'm don't think it matters a whole lot though. Other than that it's just like any other M60B40.
I'm guessing the 4.4 from the e39s can't rev quite as much as the 4.0? I know the dinan tune on mine raised it somewhere just above 6000 but i never go that far because torque drops drastically around 5500. Did you do intake mods to improve airflow to counter this or is it stock?
the early M62's (non vanos) have an increased intake manifold, matching with the m60's manifold. Non Vanos engines have a better peak at the end of the rev range.
Hey, I've got the same car. A 1995 BMW 540i 6 speed, I'm running straight pipes, with a flowmaster and cat delete. It's chipped but I'm not sure with what. Can you run me over your set up on you whole car? And is that rear bumper stock? Thanks!
Ibrahim Odeh Exhaust is like it says in the description, Two tubes replacing the cats, center resonator still in place and the muffler removed in favor of two pipes. Don't rememeber the diameter but I think it's 2-1/4". Car is automatic stock but swapped to 6 speed with everything manual related out of a clunker 540i/6 Touring. Front bumper is standard with the brake ducts, rear bumper is M5. Performance chip is from DUDMD, or Dima G here on UA-cam. Suspension is Bilstein sports with FK automotive 60/40 lowering springs. Since this video was posted the flywheel has been updated to a single mass lightweight one, installed by a proud new owner. I sold it in 2014 and went back to school :)
Just dual 2.25" pipes all the way, except the center resonator is still there. I'm going to buy a muffler for next summer, this was temporary since the stocker got disconnected and fell off, so I just put to pipes instead and some shiny tips :P
streetracerm5 Well E36's are about 250-300kg's ligther than E34's. That makes a huge difference. Last weekend I had about 300kg extra weight in my E36 328i (passengers + luggage). The car felt sluggish and slow compared to the usual. Extra 300kg's take a huge chunk out of the performance in any car.
he already answered: Exhaust is like it says in the description, Two tubes replacing the cats, center resonator still in place and the muffler removed in favor of two pipes. DanniV8 Thanks. Great video, love the little flames. My 540i6 also used to pop like that. I do M60/M62/M62tu/M73 tunes currently, will be expanding over to the I6 bmw line soon. I'm more motivated to get cracking on the 540i6 turbo build again, now that the shop is up and running somewhat. I'm DUDMD, btw.
Hi Dima G , I'm interested in buying one of your performance chip for my E34 540i/6. I looked on ebay but I cannot find anything for the M60B40 engine ...
Doubt anyone would notice any difference in street use. There isn't even a track in this country to try it out on to see if it's making any difference at all. Plus, the clutch was slipping when I recorded this. It has been replaced since.
@1 2 - Then it'll be very similar. To get it to rev this high you need a chip though. This revs 800rpm higher than stock. Just know that a 2001 540i will have four cats instead of two and has oxygen sensors after the cats as well while the E34 only has them before. This means that removing them will throw a code and give you a check engine light. I have not looked into how to bypass that, perhaps it's possible with a computer update at the same time as the rev limiter is increased.
Im not worried abt getting cel light just wanna have it for sometime and put cats back when i sell the car which i probably wont ever do :D and thanks for the help
The computer will try to correct the problem though, so your car might start running leaner or richer. I'd do a quick Google search on E39 decat and see if you find some good info.
+Captian Stiggy I've tuned my brother's 540i6 99 -m62b44tu engine. All 4 cats are removed, as well as the muffler. Factory resonator in place. It has our DUDMD DME software. It also spits similar flames on the shifts, and makes pretty decent power.
I made and uploaded a video today (using my other "bigtex144" account) of an in car acceleration and I bounced off the rev limiter in 2nd gear just the same lol! Must be a 540i/6 thing...
