At 14:57 he said that the speed needs to be atleast 1% over the current record to count? So later on thrust could have set a record of 757mph with no sonic booms and then went on to the 763mph with sonic booms and it wouldn't have counted as a land speed record because its not more than 1% above 757mph. Does the timing equipment have a 1% margin of error?
Hi - thanks for your comment! The FIA rules stipulate that new records have to exceed the current record by at least 1%. Interesting point you raise though - it’s possible that the 1% rule was originally introduced to cover timing discrepancies before electronic timing systems were introduced.
Back when Britain was still capable of doing something. We need the SSC team to deal with the never ending flow of rubber boats arriving on our shores.
Didn’t Stan Barrett set the LSR in 1979 @ 734 mph breaking the sound barrier of 731mph at the respective conditions. Why are they saying the record is 633? What am I missing? Are different records kept for rocket power vs turbin power.? The LSR is the LSR right? Someone help me understand.
The world land speed records are run under the supervision of the French FIA and it clearly stipulates that to qualify TWO runs must be completed in OPOSITE directions within a 1 HOUR (or 10 hour as apropriate) period. I sugest you go research the FIA apendix D it is all in there. Still recovering from 6 exhausting weeks on the Blackrock 24 years back.
Because Stan Barrett *didn't* break the LSR or the SOS barrier in 1979. Since him and Hal Needham, the person who owned the Budweiser rocket car, did their run without any FIA or FIM officials to independently verify the speed achieved, nor have the team ever released the radar data that was recorded by the US Air Force at Edwards AFB that day. The only people who think Barrett broke the sound barrier 14 years before Andy Green and Thrust SSC did, is Barrett himself, Needham (who took that false belief to his grave) and a few of the excitable spectators who saw the supposed supersonic run. It never was officially verified and has been rightly dismissed for record purposes. I hope that answers your questions.

To answer your question, the last time America *officially* held the land speed record was in the brief seconds before Richard Noble crossed the measured mile for the second of his two record breaking runs in Thrust2 in 1983. The holder of that record was Gary Gabelich in the rocket-propelled Blue Flame, with a speed of 622.407 mph (1010km/h) over the measured mile (630.478 mph, 1014.656 km/h over a kilometre) way back in October 1970.. therefore becoming the first person to register a speed of 1000 km/h on land.
