From Blackstar’s website, regarding the name:
“St. James is one of the oldest parts of Blackstar’s hometown Northampton, England. It’s the site of 12th century abbey that gives the area its name and is home to the Northampton Saints, our world-class rugby team’s grounds, and the iconic lift tower that dominates our skyline. Personally, for the Founders there was also a very significant James (Jim) in our history… not to mention the many guitarists that also share the name; Hendrix, Page, Hetfield, plus many more.”

Blackstar has a big range of "quality" i like those in concept but have not tried one. Multiple builders have looked into things like dc heaters to quiet down the amps. I don’t know if it means as much in the US and Europe but for Australians this is perfect for purchases on the online used amp market. Cheaper postage with the weight and no need to worry if the voltage is right for your country. Those two factors are very exciting.

I was recently looking to buy my first "real" tube amp. My two main candidates were the Marshall DSL20-40 and the Blackstar HT20-50. There were only a few demos of the Blackstar that sounded good, but almost every DSL demo sounded great. Had this been available and if my budget was stretched a little more, the St James 6L6 would have been right there with the Marshall, maybe even surpassed it with all the extra features. In the end, I found a MINT Carvin V3M that I'm absolutely smitten with for a KILLER price (such an underappreciated amp) to go along with my 1997 Carvin AE185. Love the channel; keep up the good work!

Any amp that sounds as good as that one and is not a back breaker is a smile maker for me. After all the years humping Marshall’s across the country I’m done with the heavyweight title championships. lol… thanks man that’s on my radar now. I just bought the PRS MT15 amp it’s great to carry but the 2nd channel is noisy for some reason. Haven’t figured that out yet but I have a suspicion it’s a tube making all that racket. I do have two smaller Blackstar amps the fly 3 with an extension speaker that actually bumps it up to 6watts and can run on 6 AA batteries. Very cool little amp w built in delay as well. Also just got a I’d core stereo 10 Blackstar with built in effects solid state or digital of course. Used for $78.00 at Guitar Center in white tolex no less. Haven’t even tried it out yet. lol… oh well gotta go dude awesome as usual! See ya…

I was never a fan of blackstar… had the IDcore 50w and I didn’t like it. Also had a used HT Club 40w tube amp as well but someone spilled a mug of beer on it at a jam session one day…and it’s never turned back on again. But these St. James series amps have me wondering if I should try one out. I love my EL34 tubes but I really also wanna try the 6L6 version as well. Love that it’s light weight as well considering I have had spinal fusion and four shoulder surgeries lol. Awesome demo man. The transformer replacement is what they perfected over years in the computer industry to make computer more portable
thy just made a more powerful version. In short it is a tech that was already designed to take the knocks in the computer world. So you are not gambling on some totally new tech just a different application of it. Tone wise it are not different then any similar tube amp going for a similar voicing. In a blindfold test comparison you may like it or not but not because another amp has a conventional transformer.

Being an electrical engineer I was always thinking why amp manufacturers haven’t discovered SMPS to go with tube amplifiers. This is awesome. A good power source makes life easier for engineers and circuits. But purists are even against solid state rectifiers used in tube amps. I don’t know if it will catch up with other manufacturers. But certainly there’s a cost saving aspect to SMPS. Reliability might be an issue going forward compared to good old iron blocks. I personally like the idea behind it. Thankfully I don’t have to carry my amplifier anywhere so I don’t care about weight.

My only problem with Blackstar amps is that amp techs almost universally say they are an absolute nightmare to work on; the circuits are super convoluted and virtually impossible to track down the cause of a problem if the amp just dies on you and I’ve had two friends whose Blackstars just died on them randomly.
It’s just the notion that if buy one, it will almost certainly have to be replaced in the future, because good luck finding a tech that can work on one when that bitch is out of warranty.
Most modern Marshall and Mesas are also full of PCBs and ICs, but the circuits are well laid-out, relatively easy to understand and work on, and diagnose problems. Hell, there was whole website and community dedicated to just the Marshall JVM and how to mod them and work on them. You won’t find anyone working on their own Blackstar amps.
