Daniel, the Supremes were a Motown R&B act, featuring Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.Their version(1966) is rhythm & blues with a little funk with the Funk Bros. accompanying them instrumentally. Ross left the group and became more famous singing on her own and as a Hollywood movie star. Vanilla Fudge were a US Rock band, this cover is from 1967 and is considered psychedelic rock. These versions are very different although the same song. Kim Wilde covered it in 1986. Many artists did a version of this song over the years including Wilson Pickett, Rod Stewart, Jackie DeShannon and The Box Tops.

I got the Vanilla Fudge album for free when my wife and I bought a cabinet model Fisher Philharmonic stereo, which by the way still plays all my vinyl. Still married to that same lady going on 54 years ( June 17 ). Wtf did all that time go???? It truly seems like only yesterday.

Vanilla Fudge came out with this cover in 1967 and turned the Motown hit by the Supremes into a Psychedelic song it’s an awesome psychedelic song from a time when bands were delving into psychedelic sound of Rock music ! Procol Harum “Whiter shade of pale” is another psychedelic rock song with heavy organ sound that is the catch of the song that came out in 1967 ! This band Vanilla Fudge is an American band but heavily influenced the future rock band Deep Purple ! This song is one of the heaviest songs during that time !

Very interesting hearing both versions back to back. The Supremes was more about liberation from a bad relationship, but Vanilla Fudge had much more angst about not being to break away from the hold his former love had on him. Wonderful contrast in styles and meaning. And very perceptive of you to notice the contrast. You need to more of these.

The Supremes version (1966) was intended for a pop/dance audience. Vanilla Fudge version (1967) was reworked for a psychedelic audience. The acid scene exploded in 1967 and ushered in the "summer of love". Hippie music!!!

Hi, I've never written on your page before even though I have watched your channel's reactions a few different times and have found them very enjoyable. However, after watching your reaction to this one and seeing that you really liked it, you should watch them doing this song live. There is a live tv version from the Ed Sullivan from 1968 that I've seen quite a few people doing reactions for on this song, and these 4 guys are very good performers live. With myself being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist starting at the age of 12 years old, I thought these guys did a great job live on this song. The keyboard played does lead vocals while the guitar player, bass player and drummer do all the backing vocals. I played in the 80's and 90's so that's something that you used to see a lot of with more then one singer in the band. I was in two different bands where all of us could sing lead vocals, so we did all kinds of harmonies like these bands did. It was normal to see this in bands back then. But you won't see it now or even for the last 25 years or so. But I just thought it's something you would enjoy so I thought I would mention it when I saw your reaction to the audio version. Great work.

One of the all-time great one-hit wonders! Who would’ve ever thought a remake of a Motown song would become a psychedelic rock classic? Love it! (Just have to add … I laughed when you asked if the Supremes were three ladies. The Supremes were Motown royalty and had a string of hits for a number of years.) P.S. wish you had listened to the radio edit of the remake, rather than the longer extended version. I think the shorter version is more impactful.

Loved the Supremes and their version, but it was 1966, I was in 6th grade and it was Motown pop! What did I know about blues? Nothing. That version was driving forward in a happy upbeat fling. The music didn't match the mood of the lyrics at all.
Vanilla Fudge, on the other hand, (in 1967) slowed it down to a proper bluesy pace and brought out the pain inferred by the lyrics. Great rockin' blues; a proper treatment for these lyrics. I keep the Vanilla Fudge version on my playlist to repeat often. LOVE IT!

They made some heavy covers of other band's songs such as the Beatles' 'Ticket to Ride' and Donovan's 'Season of the Witch'. Similar groups like the Electric Prunes, Rare Earth and early Deep Purple sounded like this too. Listen to the latter's cover of the Beatles' song 'Help'.
Another good comparison song would be 'Every Little Thing' by the Beatles then covered by Yes.
And Yes also did a cover of the song 'America' originally by Simon & Garfunkel. Yes made a short and a long version.

The PC (and console) game 'Mafia 3' (2016), which is set in 1968 (in a fictionalized version of New Orleans, Louisiana, called "New Bordeaux"), served as a 'backdoor' of sorts to a bunch of 60's songs I would've otherwise never have bothered listening to. And while I am familiar with the obvious hits, there were some obscure ones that really deserved more recognition than what you might see on a Time-Life music CD infomercial on TV, from the 90's to mid 2000's. They probably still do those, but I know they don't show them as much anymore. This song is a perfect example of what I just said: I grew up, only knowing the Supremes' original....... then I pick up 'Mafia 3' for my computer, which features this song when you play the radio (in-game). I was blown away the first time I heard it. Later on in the game, they also actually include the Supremes' original version of the song as well! Yep...... best purchase I've made all year. Great music, all around!

Vanilla Fudge. The drummer and bass player went on to form Cactus, a band sometimes called the American Led Zeppelin. You might check them out. Songs... “Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover”, or “One Way or Another”.
Okay, what you heard here is the evolution of the concept of “heavy” music. Supremes = pop music, and they were masters! Fudge = heavy music. Slower, punchier. Fudge released their take of this in August ‘67, but had evolved it playing in New York in earlier ‘67. The original song still had public awareness.
‘67 and ‘68 were MASSIVE musical change years.
Just to be a pest, I think I’ll suggest some Blue Cheer. You seem to like the heavier stuff. You know Cream, Hendrix; Blue Cheer would be the third power trio of the age. Maybe try “Next Time Around” from Vincebus Eruptum, or, my preference, “Sun Cycle” from Outside Inside.
Well, thanks for all you do. I’ll just hang around, man. 😉

So different from the Motown/R&B sound of the Supremes.
Note the simulated sitar sound in the intro. The generation attached to this song did a deep dive into Eastern philosophy and Eastern music. So much so, that you might even consider a reaction to one of Ravi Shankar's (George Harrison's sitar mentor and Nora Jones's father, incidentally) ragas. That influence on sixties music cannot be understated. An example would be The End by the Doors. (I'm about to check out your reaction).

Vanilla Fudge also does a strange cover version of The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" and early metal band Deep Purple does a great cover of The Beatles "Help". Sometimes, the most interesting covers are the ones that sound completely different from the original.

Daniel, you should do a back to back comparison for All alone the Watch tower. Bob Dylan original the Jimmy Hendrix version. Not that is a match up👍🏻. Great job discovering some real classics.

I had just rekindled my appreciation for this Vanilla Fudge version and had thought is there a better cover of a song than this. That overshadows the original so noticeably. The only one that came close in my thinking was Watchtower.

Take a gander at "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," done by soul superstar Marvin Gaye and covered by rock legends Creedence Clearwater Revival. And come to think of it, "Rolling on the River," done by Creedence and covered by R&B stars Ike & Tina Turner.

I'd love to see a reaction to the song Walk On By with contrasting versions by Dionne Warwick and The Stranglers. Warwick's original of the Bacharach/David composition sounds just like what you would expect of a 1964 pop hit with Dionne's great vocals, a great piano track, complimentary horn and string sections and then The Strangles cover takes a lament and turns it into an aggressive post-punk accusation with a great driving bass carrying the song, plus Greenfield's organ and Cornwell's guitar solos stand out. Walk On By has been covered a lot but The Stranglers version is the stand out for me.

Oh, and as to this. One of the things I love about Vanilla Fudge is that they tended to slow things down and really draw the raw emotions out of the lyrics and music. In this case, the Supremes did a nice, poppy little tune, and Vanilla Fudge turned it into this beautifully ponderous and heavy plea for relief.

    • @KevinRCarr
      @KevinRCarr 4 роки тому +1

In the Supremes version, the singer(s) are angry and scolding. In the Vanilla Fudge version the singer(s) is devastated and literally, hanging by a thread, hurting so hard he can barely believe it.

Just for fun, not for cideo reaction, you should watch the live video recordings of this. They're phenomenal performers....not just great musicians.

60's radio required short concise songs, 3 min or there abouts. Vanilla Fudge didn't care, and FM was the thing.

Great song choice, loved the comparison. Would love to hear some more of your reactions to Jethro Tull maybe the "Baker Street Muse medley", I think you would love it, it's in the line of thick as a brick, but not nearly as long. And some Iron Butterfly ina-goda-davida, was good but it's not the best of Iron butterfly. Check out there album "Ball", songs like "In the crowds", "soul experience", or maybe, " in the Time of our lives" they have so many great songs you'll be as amazed as you were at Jethro Tull

1966 for the Supremes happy, too-fast, dance version of this painful breakup lyri?!?!
1967 for Vanilla Fudge's slowed down, psychedelic, hard rock, bluesy, properly treated version of a painful break-up song.
