I think your qualms over the NSMB series are completely valid, I share the same sentiments. NSMB was a curse that even infected the rest of the franchise. But I think Super Mario Bros Wonder might be more hopeful than your initial impressions!! I'm gonna babble a LOT so bear with me if youre willing to read this all- Firstly the art style. Although it does share a similar vibe as NSMB, it seems to really be like a colorful evolution of it. It's far more detailed and dynamic, the characters and enemies both have so much facial expressions and livelier, cartoonier animations that really make the game feel fresh. I feel like this style is almost like.. the 2D official drawings of the Mario characters mixed with NSMB mixed with a bit of claymation. The little details are really nice the more you look, and there's been tons of neat comparisons online ^^ For the 4-player co-op, NSMB definitely designed its levels around 4 players because all the players bounced off each other and interacted and stuff, BUT I think your concerns of the level design are actually addressed in this! Note how in the trailer, none of the players have collision. They don't bounce off each other, they don't collide with each other, etc. I think this makes the level design be able to more appropriately be adjusted for single player without having to focus too much on 4 that would be getting in each other's way being crammed into one screen! The level theming also seems to be much more varied than NSMB could ever hope to achieve. Levels during the sunset, silhouetted shadow-y levels, strange factory type levels or floating crystals/candy, the ideas seem to be much more original than NSMB could ever hope to achieve. And even the new enemies! There's 7 brand new enemies throughout this trailer, thats more than what what NSMB entries would had in their entire games. For the Wonder Flower, I think it's valid to be concerned over one-note gimmicks like the flying squirrel or Mega Mushroom. But I think the Wonder Flower is different! The idea behind it is that it will change either the level you play, or Mario himself, and I think that's such an open-ended concept and I'm quite hopeful. In this trailer alone, the Wonder Flower seems to do several different things in different levels: 1.Make pipes come alive and move around. A bit basic, but that seems to be the first level. It's an introduction to the concept 2. Make various types of enemies appear in swarms, like the Hippos that mario seems to bounce off of, which would again transform the level a bit 3. Transform Mario into a ball, which turns the level into a ball physics kind of roll and crash level 4. Make a stampede of cloud bison(?) appear, which seems to make an auto-runner of sorts? 5. Cause a level to turn sideways, which makes it become a chase sequence with the giant spiky boulder 6. Cause you and the enemies to stretch, which might throw off your perception It really seems to be the idea is both making a visual spectacle while also changing how the level plays out and that seems to be a much more solid concept than things like "haha mario grow big," which I totally agree was such a throwaway gimmick. To just address a few miscellaneous things, with the characters I super agree the boring toads were NOT a good supplement for additional playable characters. But having them on top of also having a playable Princess Peach (which already means the game's basic "plot" will be a little different than Bowser kidnaps Peach), and a playable Daisy as you mentioned, who is a character that has been delegated to spin off jail ever since her creation, turns the playable roster from lame into actually pretty cool. And it seems that different colored Yoshis might also be playable from one shot in the trailer! And while it's true they seem to be using a flagpole again, I do like that the flagpole is accompanied by something new. At the end of it, there seems to be some sort of strange Bowser fortress that transforms into a Flower house, and a new character comes out of it! It seems to be something adjacent to a Toad, but with a different outfit and a flower bud head instead of a mushroom head, which makes sense as one of the levels is called "Welcome to the Flower Kingdom!" Which means the game takes place outside of the Mushroom Kingdom with a few new characters, definitely unlike anything in NSMB. There even seems to be a little caterpillar prince(?) that travels along with you, you can see after the flagpole scene and on the box art. Sorry for the long essay, I just had a lot to say about this game. Overall I think Wonder does a lot to separate itself from NSMB, more than what meets the eye, and I'm confident that we're finally breaking free of the old mundane ways 2D Mario has been trapped in for too long :)
I think the wonder seed would have been better suited in a Yoshi Story followup. Remember flower power in that game? Heck even the original Yoshi Island had Touch Fuzzy. I commented directly to Ron that it might be an age thing, seeing how most Mario improvements are window dressing. The idea of a core concept is what makes games similar to their previous titles but also why they seem stagnant after a while. Giving the idea or franchise a rest can allow for new ideas to percolate or simply generate a fresh feeling of playing something new even though the game is very similar to previous releases. Take Mega Man 11 as an example or the idea of nostalgia (old is new again). I don't think these are usually successful in business past that initial revival. They usually don't build enough interest in the Johnny-come-lately-crowd and those who played those games bitd and the revival game aren't sticking around. They're bored.
"Is this supposed to be cute or something?" Yes!!! it's a Mario game primarily aimed at kids 🤣. It's not always about us the adults or the long time fans. On the bright side, a whole new generation of kids get a new, beautiful, mainline old school 2D style Mario game, that has a nice hefty budget behind it, i'm confident it will be competently made and challenging enough. The humor seems cheesy, but I know the newer generation eats stuff like that up. Is what it is. And about the flag poll, it's a nit pick, and I agree with you, old, but some kid might look back at some old Mario game videos and say "Oh wow the same flagpole, so cool!". So, I completely understand your sentiment as a long time old school gamer, but for a new generation, I think this is amazing. And atleast the Mario fanbase isn't starving. Far from it from what I can see. So i'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. This looks like a healthy instalment that will make a lot of people happy. And not just that but the fundamentals of a Mario game are all there. Gotta let go a little sometimes bro. Besides, we have Mario RPG!!!
My opinions on this line up with yours, like, its a definite step up from New Sup but it still just looks to similar on the whole. Even the bah music is back. It feels to me like so many people were hoping so much for something that isn't a New Sup title, that theyre kinda just over compensating the reaction to this when in reality it isnt that different. Now at the end of the day, I'm still hopeful that this could surprise me if there's some kind of key structure difference or something unique to make it stand out, honestly it hinges on what they show at that direct tomorrow. I really don't think enough people are talking about how the wonder flower gimmick is basically just the same thing as New Sup games having different level concepts, just repackaged to be like "hey, this is something original and exciting." But yeah, I feel pretty similar to you.
Ok I know it’s your opinion and I respect it but damn it feels like your being extremely nitpicky of the smallest things sometimes I personally liked the nsmb series so my opinions different so to me it just feels like you’re being extremely critical but I still respect your opinion nonetheless
I appreciate you being respectful. Yes I know I'm nit-picking. I'm sure the game will be fine. I just hope it's a game that I'll return to time and time again unlike the nsmb series.
I'm 43 and been playing videogames since i was 6. I've played every single Mario game at release and obsessed over them. Must say, your analysis is so spot on that I'm absolutely shocked that you're much younger than I am. I bet the farm that most people who see this video will not have a clue as to what you're talking about. To everywhone who reads this: Super Mario Bros games used to push boundaries when it came to world building and mechanics. It is the world building, level design and mechanics that are missing from the "new" Mariod games. Those games are bad 2D platformers with a Mario skin. Gone are the intricate levels, high precision platforming and the perfect tight physics that defined the original games. What's missing is Miyamoto's team and the passion for creating an impressive experience.
They really aren’t bad games you know. The level designs are fine and fun. But it’s just kinda generic. This game has a different art style which already doesn’t make it feel generic and the world themes look wacky and fun
Maybe it’s just me being positive, but I feel like most of what “looks similar” it’s just because they have to stick to the usual Mario elements and keep things recognizable. Otherwise, the art direction and animation looks vastly superior and more “colorful / animated” in a way. I have seen side by side comparisons videos between the Switch Wii U deluxe version and Wonders and the improvement is noticeable.
Its refreshing to see someone who saw it looked exactly like new super mario bros, and just seems gimmicky like those games. The first one was great but it became so stale after they made so many of them. All of those powerups seem like gimmicks, but maybe im wrong I hope I am.
Honestly, really excited for this game. The only real downside (For me) is the lack of online support, you can have local play but give options to do more then just local, the game will sell well but not well enough if online isn't supported but that's just me
I have a few guesses on why the 4 New Super Mario games look so similar.: 1. The reason the first four Mario games look so different from one another is because of technology advancements. It is pretty hard to advance technology any further to make the art look "different enough" nowadays. For example, Super Mario Bros had the limitation that every sprits could have a maximum of 3 colors. Future games didn't have those limitations because of technological advancements. In a similar way, unrelated to Mario, the double square seven-segmented display was back then used because of limitations in technology. Nowadays it is used for aesthetics. To make the display look different is definitely a difficult task when you have to make sure not to make it totally different. 2. Video game companies constantly go through the cycle of running out of ideas, so it becomes harder and harder to think of something new that doesn't veer too far from the main game. The first four games, while being very different from one another, still had a common and attached main gimmick. I think the reason Super Mario Bros 2 is an much more different is because it was the second game, so Nintendo felt like Mario needed to go on a whole new separate adventure outside the Mushroom Kingdom. This is kind of similar to how movie franchises think when making sequels. I'm just saying that while, yeah, the New Super Mario Bros series isn't the best, it isn't entirely Nintendo's fault. It is just a natural cause. All in all, try your best to look at what is good about a game rather than what is bad. Focusing on what is good about the game improves your chance at investment in the future of the series.
As far as graphics, the key to changing things up with these games would be to change them up aesthetically, not technologically. I think this game's graphics just look like the same aesthetic from the NSMB games, only with a few graphical enhancements. Just as the guy in the video said, the graphics in Wonder overall still have that same "plasticy" aesthetic as the NSMB games. Nintendo could change up the graphical aesthetic if they wanted to. For example, the Paper Mario games have a completely different/unique aesthetic, it is just that they are Paper Mario games rather than mainline 2D Mario platformers. Over the past couple of decades NIntendo seems to have purposefully settled on some sort of universal aesthetic style for mainline Mario games and how they "should" look, which ultimately starts to make the games look/feel generic. I personally would have loved them to make a new 2D Mario with a cell shaded aesthetic in which the cell shading made the characters and enemies look just like the old SMB3/SMBW hand drawn original art. Seeing a full Mario game in the art style in which the worlds were originally envisioned by the creators would have been amazing. Lastly, why does 2D Mario ALWAYS have to be deduced to "Move from left to right for a few minutes and jump on the flagpole at the end"? This structure is very played out at this point, and people fail to realize that even though this "course" structure was used in the classic games, back then when we played those games the worlds felt big and mysterious to us. That structure no longer works to invoke those same feelings; thus, the structure of how a 2D Mario game is built should evolve a bit too. For example, instead of just having an overworld in which you move from course to course, why not ditch the overworld and connect all the areas of the game together into one big 2D world that is interconnected (sort of like a metroidvania game would be)? This kind of structure in 2D Mario, if done well, would bring back a lot of those feelings that those classic games did for us back then. I think the new Zelda games are a great example of this in how they brought back similar feelings we had with the OG Zelda in the modern day by changing up the structure and aesthetics.
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 Something to keep in mind: Nintendo has somewhat of a reputation of ruining game franchises for going too far out of the previous games' comfortable boundaries, so with their most valuable franchise, the 2D Mario games, Nintendo tries to play it safe by keeping it similar to the New SMB games while still trying to do new things. The main thing a gaming company cares about is if a game sells well. Here is a positive guess on the future of the 2D Mario Franchise: Nintendo was hesitant to release Super Mario Bros Wonder, as it was (comparably) too different from the most recent New SMB Games. They thought people wouldn't like it. However, the contrary happened. People loved the game. As a result, because of the small taste Nintendo had on trying new things, Nintendo is ready to make new 2D Mario Games that are even more different than Super Mario Bros Wonder.
Games in general are stagnant. The genres seemed played out. I think the problem is that making games is costly. Platform holders are investing more in the machines, accessories, and software. What better way to float the cost than by making some tweaks to an idea and releasing a full cost game. The faster and more frequent games are released, the faster you get a return on your investment. Maybe we're jaded and the games still sell to the kiddies. The more I think about media, the more I think that sentiment is true. It's not my job to think up new Marios. Maybe Wonder is a "safe" bet. I'm sure they do their research, but why not make a game that plays on the strengths of a platform? Certain games feel right on the Wii, DS, using a GameCube controller, etc.. Nintendo is the king of gimmicks. Anyways, Nintendo probably isn't putting that much time into new since anything with Mario's name is a "safe" bet in the minds' of parents. My personal opinion about all Mario games is that they don't change much. Mario 2 isn't that different either, in retrospect. No ill towards 2. I'm grateful for its contributions.
Full disagreement. I think Wonder is what the “new” games SHOULD HAVE BEEN, this whole time. The expressive animations, the Yoshi’s island fuzzy mechanic…. Looks like a lot of fun. And better for kids/siblings since no throwing each other into the void lol Also, you mention it all looks plastic & shiny … I agree. But you have like at least 50 shiny plastic action figures new in shiny plastic box behind you on your walls my dude. Also, I do agree elephant Mario looks stupid lol.
Yeah, am not much one to get cynical, and Nintendo reproducing much of the DS Mario game for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS really strayed away from the sense of charm and identity the older games had.
Power ups are gimmicks. The wonder flower brings that into the main gameplay. Past games had to be completed as small Mario minimum. It’s more like Yoshi’s Island transformations, but every level.
I agree with you completely on all your comments - the "New Super Mario Bros" lines are all very bland and similar, and very little of the way in innovation/creativity... hopefully Wonder might give us something new.
I get you point, I'm so tired of New Super mario estyle, but give it a chance, I'm realized that the physics are pretty different, the Run of Mario, his jumps, he's not so heavy as NSB.
Gotta say, I'm in complete disagreement with you with on a lot of what you said. I was in high school when New Super Mario Bros dropped on the DS and I remember loving it. I 100%'ed it that night. Only disappointed with how short and easy it seemed, but me and my buddy had a good time with the vs mode. When the Wii game dropped, me and another buddy of equal high Mario skill played it 2 player co-op and it was a blast! We abused the co-op mechanics to break the stages and 100%'ed in one sitting and I remember the final battle being epic! Now that Dolphin has online play, I'm looking forward to trying it online co-op again sometime. Ofcourse, that's just how I experienced them. New Super Mario Bros 2 and WiiU were definitely underwhelming though. Just expansion packs at best. I have the same kind of concern about Wonder, but I'm hopeful that they learned from their mistakes.
I'm jelly that you enjoyed those games - I wish I had! I remember being really frustrated with "New SMB Wii" while writing down a list of all my complaints about it - lol. Of course, I was comparing it to Super Mario World which you could argue is not fair, but hey, that's how I saw things.
@@RonManGaming Well me and my buddy were as well. It feels like they tried to take the best elements of SMB3 and World and combine them, but didn't quite nail what made either special
DS and Wii will always be childhood games for me. I absolutely loved them growing up. I remember playing the hell out of the DS game. I remember it being really hard and dying a lot. It was one of my earlier games
I never played the handheld ones, as I've never owned a handheld (other than a Super Game Boy, if that counts) but I enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U. That's prob cuz they were the only ones I played and didn't play them back-to-back (I also played them solo). I'm sure Wonder will be fun, as it's still a 2D Mario platformer. On the other hand, I could see them getting boring if all were played together straight through. P.S. Mario needs a little bit more of a neck in both this game and the Super Mario RPG remake.
Haha yeah it's like he doesn't want to stick his neck out and try something new - lol. Yeah the "new" SMB games are not bad games at all - many people love them, but to me, they were just so utterly forgettable. I hope Wonder will be different.
wonder has quite the echochamber online but I gotta agree w everything u said. as another commenter here said I think that the series got so stale and safe that any slight pivot to something different was going to blow ppls minds and it worked, but nintendo is trying too hard to be weird like its not genuine and all the quirks feel slapped together. very corny all around, theyre not getting my money.
I hear you on the look of the modern 2D Mario games. It always seemed sterile and bland to me. This one does seem to have some unique animations and mechanics (although they have the potential to be gimmicky). For me it will come down to the gameplay. Have to wait until October... Great to see a video from you!
I think the gimmick in this game is going to be different from something like NSMB or NSMB2 because at least you can never expect what you are going to get out of it compared to the old games' predictability.
I think we kind of share the same opinion on these Mario games. I love 1-World, World being the favorite. I want to like these newer games, but every time I play them, I play for a little bit and stop. I don't hate it, but it doesn't drive me to want to keep going.
I grew up on the New Super Mario Bros series, but I can't bring myself to play through them again, however I do still love the Mario versus Luigi and mini game mode on the DS version. It's pretty awesome that someone figured out how to make a unity remake of that mode
hi… I remember when super mario world came out and I was overwhelmed of everything I saw. Better graphics, and sound but a new world , new settings new yoshi new enemies it was dense and mysterious ... wonders look aweful the models look weird and the colorpalette is all over the place grose its any color at any point ... no feelor theme for the world looks all the same ... nintendo should be a shamed to treat Mario like this !! they could do so much more … i magine a real jump and run adventure through dense rich living worlds (like hollow knights green path) with unseen worlds and enemieswith a little story where you wonder 😂 how the next level or world will looks like … donkey kong county did a better job on snes and with 2.5 D you could have done so much cooler thing but yeah nice vid!
To me, the biggest issue with the newer generation of 2D Mario games is that there is nothing memorable about them. None of them are considered classics, in the same vein as SMW and earlier. Generic is a good word. Especially with the music.
To me saying mario games dont need a flagpole is like saying the 1up doesnt have to be a mushroom why isnt it a heart like mario land 2. But i can understand that your worried that the game will be simular. I personally think it looks great and the new animations look really good with the smeer frames.
I've never played any New Mario games because, yes, they look too basic and generic... But this new one is clearly not a "New Mario". C'mon, you watched the trailer. You saw how the animation looks supreme and the levels look completely insane. It has nothing to do with the New Mario series aside from being a 2D Mario.
I sure do hope you're correct about this game. I did see the animation and sure, it looks good but so do many other games, including the "new" SMB games. You never played them, but they too had "insane" things in them. This does seem to be a step in the right direction but graphics alone can't make a game good - I just hope the gameplay sets itself apart from the "new SMB" games and I'm not convinced it will based on the trailer. But again, I really do hope you're correct. Thanks for watching my video!
@@RonManGaming I wasn't talking about the graphics. When I said the levels look insane, it's because they literally look insane. It looks like Mario is on mushrooms or something. The first thing I thought when I watched the trailer was that Mario was on drugs. It looks completely bonkers. The interactivity in the levels, what Mario can do in them, going into the background, interacting with physics, enemies, objects (the pipes are alive in this game), all the crazy things happening in them. That's way more intense and have way more variety than what I've seen from the New Mario games. I'm a not a huge Mario players (2D or 3D). I've only played Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1, 3D Land and 3D World. I didn't even touch any of the 2D games... Even in the SNES era, I always thought they look boring and generic (I was playing Sonic back then). This is the first Mario adventure I'm excited for since I was born. lol.
Yeah I get that and that's cool that you're excited and appreciate the visuals and the trippy vibe they bring - I'm sure that halluncinogenic vibe will go hand-in-hand with the gameplay. I'll guess we'll wait and see how this game shapes up.
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 So you're saying the only thing different in this game is Mario's movemnet? Sorry, man, but you're practicing what is called "Intellectual dishonesty".
if you open your fucking eyes you can see they switch the 4 player co-op did you see any of the characters hopping off another's you can see the characters go behind a player so no more bumping into another players are jumping off players heads A Mario game with 4 players makes it fun and hectic 12:30 really don't do that 9:46 + don't shit on the gimmick😤
Yeah anything Labeled as "New" is always something a little bit Familiar but Worse in Video Games and Pro Wrestling this is mostly true. I think Mario's Major Problem is that He's More of a Brand then an actual Character. I don't think he's allowed to have any Personality because he Just Represents Nintendo Now. I used to Love Paper Mario but what I liked about those Games is that they added to the Mario Universe and Gave a sense that all this stuff was Going on in the Background of Mario's Adventures but for the Last Couple of Games they seemingly weren't allowed to come up with New Characters all we got were like Toads.
That's an interesting point about Mario being more of a brand than a character - I think you're on to something! I never thought about it like that. I just want a fun 2D Mario platformer that's different than all those generic "new SMB" games. SMB Wonder seems like more of the same with a few new visuals and maybe a couple new mechanics.
Sad that they were ripped of the ability to make new characters. Color Splash and Origami King would've been so much better. I still like the games but imagine what they could've been.
You broke my heart 💔 We love New Super Mario Bros because drinking and killing your friends. 😂😂😂 We only play them 4 players and have done it 3 times now. That being said, I would NEVER play it single player so I get your point. Also, I will buy that game if it's 4 player 😂😂 We just love couch coop.
@@RonManGaming We would ensure you enjoyed it too. I keep saying why hasn't someone invented a teleported yet but instead we will probably get a psvr 3 for $11789 cad
Been playing games ever since first mario and all the rest.....nintendo likes to hold game specific information close to the chest. Let's hope this is the case.
As someone who loves NSMBDS and NSMB Wii, totally agree with them being way too generic. Emphasis on the first two games. I also grew up playing NES Mario 1 and Mario 3 (and a relative had a snes with Mario World), and I have to agree. 3 and World bieng distinct were much better than the New series. They're great for people who've never played Mario games, but that's it. NSMB 2 especially felt like a slap in the face, even to me as a 9 year old, which is really saying something because Mario is my favorite franchise. But I'm excited for Wonder. Really excited. I don't know if you saw the direct from late August, but it's doing things NSMB couldn't so much as dream about. New Biomes, Enemies, Badges with new abilities, level mechanics, new forms of Multiplayer, Power ups and Wonder Flowers that look ridiculously fun, it has everything I could ever want from a new game. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I probably will.
Huh. I don't get it. I think the (new) Super Mario Bros for Switch is the very best of all of them. Four player co-op is hilarious, too. Crazy gaming. Really looking forward to the new one, too.
The Advance series, SMB Deluxe, New SMB DS and New SMB Wii are the best SMB games. New SMB Wii will always be my favorite 2D Mario game of all time. New SMB 2, New SMB U/New SMB Deluxe are are a bit of a disappointment though.
I'm with you with the exception that I did like the Wii game as the Propeller cap was a good way to make use of the motion controller. Otherwise, the series has been asleep at the wheel. 100%
Nothing will ever impress this guy because he will hold onto his old games. This is a total shift imo and I grew up with the originals being 29, with my favorite being Super Mario bros. 3. Nothing will ever change his mind and he cemented his views.
I think it looks great but I would like them to ditch the bland 3D art style. It's long in the tooth, just a polished version of SM64. Same for almost all of their games, really
Most of the worries presented in this video are a tad unfair and biased towards the classic games, tbh- missing the forest for the trees >chides this game for not doing things exactly like SMB3 and World (like having a flying power-up), but doesn't like how the New Super Mario Bros. games rely on nostalgia and do the same things over and over >cringes at the sight of the Yellow Toad still being there, but downplays playable Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi (who's playable by himself this time and not just a power-up mount) adding much-needed character variety >rants about the flagpole marking the end of the level again, despite it being fully diegetic to the game's world this time (it rescues the new NPCs from the fort at the end of the level and gives you a collectible) >singles out Elephant Mario for being stupid when the older games had similarly nonsensical stuff like raccoon suits that made you fly and Bowser riding in a hovercraft shaped like a clown's head >doesn't talk or speculate much about things like the game taking place in a different location than the Mushroom Kingdom (like in SMW) or levels taking place in the background and foreground >general "3D models lame, 2D sprites good" vibes despite the looks of the characters taking direct inspiration from the classic games' instruction manual artwork The one concern I agree with is 4-player co-op potentially harming level design, and even that might not be much of an issue as the levels shown in the trailer are a lot less barren and characters don't bump into each other anymore.
Although I’m sure the gameplay will be fun, I’m totally with you on the art style. I wish they would’ve went bold. Like imagine a 2D Mario with the hand-drawn look of that Wonder Boy And The Dragon’s Trap remake.
What do you mean? The art style is way bolder than the new super Mario bros games. Compared to this, those games look kinda boring because of how bold and bright all the colors are and just the older style type of character designs are really nice too.
I dont understand how people dont think wonder is bols, it looks completely different from nsmb, wonder looks the most different out of all the games imo
I was born in 2001, and I'm of the minority that a game isn't generic or the same as a previous one, because I mostly watch playthroughs on UA-cam. But if you were to ask me if I'd rather play 4 games that have been copy and pasted from 1 game back in 2006, or play a game with 1 standout gimmick and a unique art style, I'll probably take the latter. But I think what you need is something similar to Mario, but more story centric with light bits of Drama. You know, like if Mario decided to pull a Steven Universe.
This will play like a Mario game but it looks vastly superior to the new series and I don’t know what more you expected tbh I played the new series and been disappointed with U on wii u how bland it was but this looks nothing like “bland” from the enemies, visuals, dynamic levels and colourful vibrant artstyle full of personality You should watch a comparison video but I’m surprised this wasn’t already obvious at first glance from anyone who knows about the new series Y’all seem clueless the obvious shouldn’t need to be pointed out with an analysis to see the upgrade here
Valid concerns. Also, couldn’t help but laugh when you said “What - is that supposed to be cute??” and “Ugh, those stupid toads.” But yea… For me the visuals with the NSMB games just kill me with how often they reuse assets. Also, if it’s going to be a 4 player game, they should at least push online play since they’re investing time in crafting these levels with that many players
Man you pretty much highlighted everything I was skeptical about when I watched the trailer. I am not a fan of the new super mario bros games. I grew up with SNES and SMW and new super mario and its iterations felt so underwhelming. Flag pole makes a comeback. Generic Toad characters make a comeback. Gimmick power-ups that add nothing are back. 4 player simultaneous co-op is back. No flying. It's funny how Nintendo moved away from styles like SMW in favor of the "new" but they have essentially released the same game multiple times since the wii. Nintendo doesn't do justice to what 2-D Mario could be.
You know Daisy and Yoshi are playable and flagpoles aren’t the end of the world. Gimmick power ups? Aren’t all power ups gimmicks? The 4 players don’t collide anymore so it makes it better or just ignore it! Flying? What?!
@@sahaprocks7751 Did you are when Mario because feet dinosaur flying flag-pole are Daisy and Yoshi? Not mention to hat elephant spaghetti was towards are flying?!!
@@coltwalker6990alright I’m gonna go slower. You’re literally only looking at the things that return from the NSMB games rather than the new things. So what if Toad returns. Now Daisy, Peach and Yoshi are playable. Power ups are gimmicks. Every Mario game has power ups. If you’re annoyed about multiplayer, just ignore it. Also the players don’t collide anymore so it’s not as chaotic. So what if the Flagpoles return? It’s not the end of the world. Plus the house is different since it warps into a new looking house.
@@sahaprocks7751 No need to go slow. I was simply trolling you. I get what you're saying. I just disagree with you. Frankly, for me it comes down to style. I want Nintendo to dust off the pixels and give a nod to the SNES era Mario beyond Maker type games. However, I will keep enabling Nintendo to disappoint me further by buying Wonder. I'm sure it'll be a fun ride and I'll go for a 100% completion as always. That doesn't stop me from dreaming about what could be. Nintendo is awesome, and Mario is the best.
Super Mario LSD, i mean, Super Mario Acid Trip, i mean, super Mario Wonder.. its clearly there. c'mon, even an elephant, whats more LSD than an Elephant?
My opinion is pretty close to yours on the NSMB series - i thought they were fun but they were way too similar. Like you, I'll buy it day one. I remain hopelessly hopeful because I'll always enjoy a 2-D Mario game. We can always hope lol
They absolutely need to make their games be 4 players. One of the worst parts of most Switch games is them being single player only. If you want single player only, play PC, Xbox, PS, etc. Nintendo, for better or worse, is a child/family console. My son wouldn't be absolutely obsessed with Mario, if he wasn't able to play all of the games with his mom and me. It introduces the kids into gaming.
I’ve listen to some voice lines from Luigi in the trailer and for some reason, he sounds like Charles but Mario. He sometimes sound normal and sometimes off
Im being 100% honest when im saying this, but i dont see how any way that wonder looks “too similar” to nsmb. If you looked at them sude by side you would notice that the characters render is entirley different but theres a lot more 2d incorporated to the game
I love all the new sm games so very excited for this one. I am old to, 49, been there since day 1. I fully agree it still would be nice it f it is super new and stuff not done before too thogh which was a very important thing about what macde it so awesomeback int he day, they were all very different, but simlar too
Bro just have a little faith how can you call this game generic from what we've seen so far we have new power up's a new playable character you can swim up waterfalls created by clouds there is a talking flower in the game the music is not going ba ba all the time the game actually has an art style levels have gimmicks you can even grind on rails the one level in the trailer this game is anything but generic even if they do end up as just boring gimmicks at least they add something to the game play at least the game isn't basic all the time like the nsmbs it feels like those games left you traumatized or something and now you can't trust any Mario game it actually hurts my brain to think that you are calling this generic it's good to have your concerns but what it sounds like is you are scraping the bottom of the barrel forsomething to complain about I'm sorry for getting mad at the end I'm also sorry if I spelled anything wrong.
The problem with the New era of Mario Bros games is that they're so basic with no unique improvements to make them fun to go for their next games. The reason why so many old and modern gamers love the older mario 2D games is that each game has different presentation and ummm feel to it's own game. Wonder has some improvements mostly with new visual style but it does seem to look like just another NSMB game, I'm just gonna watch others play it since I feel there is nothing gameplay significant enough to get my interest to play it. This is why I go for indie games if possible or when a long time franchise gets a revival or a fresh new life that improves on alot of it's own gameplay. I feel all of us old gamers need to stop thinking of nostalgia and think about what an old property can get a new breath of fresh air or make something new and unique or bring back something that is unique n fun that has been dormant for decades.
This sound like big cope. It does not even play same way as New super mario bros. There is no timer. Wonder mechanics seems to be inspired from Donkey kong Tropical freeze action levels. 90% of monster are new and there are plenty of new ideas that has never explored in mario world before. People will never be happy especially people that cannot accept anything new. They are prisoners of their own nostalgia.
@@richwatson1985 you implied that’s it’s silly to be worried about a video game. That’s dumb. You can be worried about silly inconsequential things and hobbies while keeping it in perspective

Your very comment to me is judgemental lol. You're judging me for judging. My point is that I hope it has it's own identity and stands out from the "new" SMB games.
@@RonManGaming Opinions and being judgmental are completely different sir. I stated facts. You’re speaking from a judgmental place because the game isn’t even out for none to play yet and you’re judging from looks. My comment must be right because i see a lot of the other comments also disagree with your judgmental opinion.
Man just say it you just mad We didn't get a new 3D mario. Seriously mad for multiplayer mario bros game Most family's that buy nintendo just want multiplayer games to play with eachother if you want single players game just play them single player its still possible Not like the experience is bad, If it were possible i wish a remake of Toads adventure with multiplayer way more fun even if you needed 4 consoles to play 4 players
You make a great point - I'll grow up first thing tomorrow morning! However, I 'd like to point out that leaving rude comments on UA-cam videos is childish; maybe even a little "immature". Maybe even someone like yourself has some "growing up" to do. So how about it - why don't we both grow up tomorrow!? Sound like a plan? Thanks for watching!
Hey! Thanks for watching the video! Although I really don't think I am "hating to hate" - I have an opinion and I shared it. This game could be amazing and I hope it is but, based on what I see, I'm not excited - that's not "hate". However, your complaint (telling me to "stfu" and "stop complaining") seems more in line with "hate" - not to mention, it's also hypocritical. Either way, I do very much appreciate your time and attention. Cheers, brother.
I think your qualms over the NSMB series are completely valid, I share the same sentiments. NSMB was a curse that even infected the rest of the franchise. But I think Super Mario Bros Wonder might be more hopeful than your initial impressions!! I'm gonna babble a LOT so bear with me if youre willing to read this all-
Firstly the art style. The little details are really nice the more you look, and there's been tons of neat comparisons online ^^
For the 4-player co-op, NSMB definitely designed its levels around 4 players because all the players bounced off each other and interacted and stuff, BUT I think your concerns of the level design are actually addressed in this!
In this trailer alone, the Wonder Flower seems to do several different things in different levels:
1.Make pipes come alive and move around. A bit basic, but that seems to be the first level. It's an introduction to the concept
2. Make various types of enemies appear in swarms, like the Hippos that mario seems to bounce off of, which would again transform the level a bit
3. Transform Mario into a ball, which turns the level into a ball physics kind of roll and crash level
4. Make a stampede of cloud bison(?) appear, which seems to make an auto-runner of sorts?
5. Cause a level to turn sideways, which makes it become a chase sequence with the giant spiky boulder
6. Cause you and the enemies to stretch, which might throw off your perception
It really seems to be the idea is both making a visual spectacle while also changing how the level plays out and that seems to be a much more solid concept than things like "haha mario grow big," which I totally agree was such a throwaway gimmick.
"Is this supposed to be cute or something?"
Yes!!! it's a Mario game primarily aimed at kids 🤣.
I really don't think enough people are talking about how the wonder flower gimmick is basically just the same thing as New Sup games having different level concepts, just repackaged to be like "hey, this is something original and exciting." But yeah, I feel pretty similar to you.
haha awesome! Thanks for the pleasant comment!

Thanks for watching! Your comment was very nice to read. It's nice to see that some people actually do understand what I mean.
Yeah I hope I'm wrong too but we'll see!
Honestly, really excited for this game. The only real downside (For me) is the lack of online support, you can have local play but give options to do more then just local, the game will sell well but not well enough if online isn't supported but that's just me
I have a few guesses on why the 4 New Super Mario games look so similar.:
Focusing on what is good about the game improves your chance at investment in the future of the series.
super mario bros 2 wasn't even a mario game in the first place.
@@Yegor_MechanicBrush up on your history. SMB2 was a re-skinned Doki Doki Panic.
@@Yegor_Mechanic Yeah. That adds onto my point.
Anything to say about the game after we got SMBW direct/previews/interviews? Intersted in your opinion.
And better for kids/siblings since no throwing each other into the void lol
Also, you mention it all looks plastic & shiny … I agree.
Although the New 2 and New U are a bit of a disappointment, we can't deny that New Wii was an innovative game.
Yeah I'm really hoping that this new game will impress me.
I've been saying this for a while. They are the same game , mario wonder is no different. Now the Mario rpg games are amazing!
Absolutely!
wow a side scroller looks like a side scroller shocker to no one
@@RonManGaming Hopefully they add story content to the Super Mario RPG remake...maybe even include Luigi as a party character.
wonder has quite the echochamber online but I gotta agree w everything u said. as another commenter here said I think that the series got so stale and safe that any slight pivot to something different was going to blow ppls minds and it worked, but nintendo is trying too hard to be weird like its not genuine and all the quirks feel slapped together. very corny all around, theyre not getting my money.
Hey RonMan! Any new opinions with the new footage or gameplay out?
I hear you on the look of the modern 2D Mario games. It always seemed sterile and bland to me. This one does seem to have some unique animations and mechanics (although they have the potential to be gimmicky). For me it will come down to the gameplay. Have to wait until October... Great to see a video from you!
Good to hear from you! Yes we'll just have to wait and see!
The jumping sound in this game sounds very similar to the jumping sound in the original Super Mario RPG
I grew up on the New Super Mario Bros series, but I can't bring myself to play through them again, however I do still love the Mario versus Luigi and mini game mode on the DS version. It's pretty awesome that someone figured out how to make a unity remake of that mode
Odyssey is the best things since World. Just one man’s opinion.
hi… I remember when super mario world came out and I was overwhelmed of everything I saw.
I want them to do SMB 3 match item box..
Just because they added some new animations to Mario's movement doesn't mean the game doesn't play JUST like the NSMB games..
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 So you're saying the only thing different in this game is Mario's movemnet? Sorry, man, but you're practicing what is called "Intellectual dishonesty".

We only play them 4 players and have done it 3 times now. That being said, I would NEVER play it single player so I get your point.
Also, I will buy that game if it's 4 player 😂😂 We just love couch coop.
Haha well I am glad that you guys got some enjoyment out of the "new" SMB series. If we lived closer, we could have played together!
Let's hope this is the case.
l didn play any mario after mario world except mario odyssey… can you recomend one or two ?
I think both Galaxy games are good!
NSMB WII is def best game of the four. I just finished it 100% today. (Also, 9-4 and 9-7 were brutal. lost all 99 lives to them collectively.)
Nothing will ever impress this guy because he will hold onto his old games. This is a total shift imo and I grew up with the originals being 29, with my favorite being Super Mario bros. 3. Nothing will ever change his mind and he cemented his views.
I was impressed by Shredder's Revenge, Sonic Mania and Monster Boy lol. Next time, watch the video before criticizing. Cheers!
I think it looks great but I would like them to ditch the bland 3D art style. It's long in the tooth, just a polished version of SM64. Same for almost all of their games, really
I agree it looks too similar to new super Mario bros.
Most of the worries presented in this video are a tad unfair and biased towards the classic games, tbh- missing the forest for the trees
>chides this game for not doing things exactly like SMB3 and World (like having a flying power-up), but doesn't like how the New Super Mario Bros. games rely on nostalgia and do the same things over and over
>cringes at the sight of the Yellow Toad still being there, but downplays playable Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi (who's playable by himself this time and not just a power-up mount) adding much-needed character variety
>rants about the flagpole marking the end of the level again, despite it being fully diegetic to the game's world this time (it rescues the new NPCs from the fort at the end of the level and gives you a collectible)
>singles out Elephant Mario for being stupid when the older games had similarly nonsensical stuff like raccoon suits that made you fly and Bowser riding in a hovercraft shaped like a clown's head
>doesn't talk or speculate much about things like the game taking place in a different location than the Mushroom Kingdom (like in SMW) or levels taking place in the background and foreground
>general "3D models lame, 2D sprites good" vibes despite the looks of the characters taking direct inspiration from the classic games' instruction manual artwork
The one concern I agree with is 4-player co-op potentially harming level design, and even that might not be much of an issue as the levels shown in the trailer are a lot less barren and characters don't bump into each other anymore.
6:16 this is the entire mario franchise and it's relationship with the fanbase summed up in one sentence
SMW2 Yoshis Island vibes when you eat too many fuzzies.
Touch fuzzy, get dizzy!
Although I’m sure the gameplay will be fun, I’m totally with you on the art style. I wish they would’ve went bold. Like imagine a 2D Mario with the hand-drawn look of that Wonder Boy And The Dragon’s Trap remake.
Absolutely! Nice hand drawn art or retro-style pixel art - like what you'd see in Dead Cells or The Messenger.
Nailed it
What do you mean?
This will play like a Mario game but it looks vastly superior to the new series and I don’t know what more you expected tbh
I played the new series and been disappointed with U on wii u how bland it was but this looks nothing like “bland” from the enemies, visuals, dynamic levels and colourful vibrant artstyle full of personality
You should watch a comparison video but I’m surprised this wasn’t already obvious at first glance from anyone who knows about the new series
Y’all seem clueless the obvious shouldn’t need to be pointed out with an analysis to see the upgrade here
Valid concerns.
I don’t think you see the difference between the classics and the new games if you see there’s not enough difference between wonder and the new games.
Thanks for having my back, bro!
Where’s the Splatoon run and gun side scroller at?
I wish they'd go back to pixel art, but with Guilty Gear quality.
Wat did u exspect ur so old school
I TOTALLY AGREE
Mario Wonder looks amazing and Mario RPG is just a cash grab.
How is it a cash grab?

It may still have the flagpole, but at least the house after it is different!
That's true!
Is he really ranting about a pole that most Mario game have?
I agree these NSMB games aren't great but for me it was that they were not enough like the old games
I agree, RonMan! The upcoming Mario game does look questionable. 🤔
In fact, it really makes me WONDER! 😉
Hahaha!! Good to hear from you, my friend.
My opinion is pretty close to yours on the NSMB series - i thought they were fun but they were way too similar. Like you, I'll buy it day one. I remain hopelessly hopeful because I'll always enjoy a 2-D Mario game. We can always hope lol
Crossing my fingers its good. I can't wait to play it with my youngest son Anakin.
Yeah I'm hoping I'll love it.
Please tell me Charles is voicing Mario and Luigi instead of Chris.
I’ve listen to some voice lines from Luigi in the trailer and for some reason, he sounds like Charles but Mario. He sometimes sound normal and sometimes off
@@sahaprocks7751he still is but they had to record new voice clips to create the game

Honestly, I am excited to super mario bros wonder because it's my first time play mario 2D game.😊
Maybe im old and the thrill of mario is gone. But im honestly not excited for this. This is literally nsmb with new character models
I dont really see how its simular to nsmb can you explain it?
Can't wait to play this
This is literally purist engery coming from this dude.
Im being 100% honest when im saying this, but i dont see how any way that wonder looks “too similar” to nsmb. If you looked at them sude by side you would notice that the characters render is entirley different but theres a lot more 2d incorporated to the game
I only played the wii one co op. It was literally made for it.
I love all the new sm games so very excited for this one. I am old to, 49, been there since day 1. I fully agree it still would be nice it f it is super new and stuff not done before too thogh which was a very important thing about what macde it so awesomeback int he day, they were all very different, but simlar too
Why don’t they just remake Super Mario world 😩😩😩 that was like the best Mario game
I think they should have made a new donkey kong game.
Your take is objectively wrong. Game looks amazing
No it doesn’t. You’re just lame.
@@Bad_KhannaI bet you’re fun at parties
@@Chrisbustaa18 wow, such original. Much burn.
be serious
I dont understnd how wonder and nsmb isnt any more different than mario 3 and world?
It looks odd to me.
Alot of people are mad at you because its the internet (its just a wild guess)
Hahaha right?
These games are mostly for kids and we have adults wining about it 😂😂😂
