This is a professional interview; podcast hosts could learn a thing or 12 from it. The interviewer never interrupts the guest, asks quality questions, covers a wide range. Well done
Totally agree. Thoroughly enjoyed this interview!
You are absolutely correct. The interviewer is very intelligent, respectful and knowledgeable. This was an interesting, fun interview. And as you said quality wise it was excellent.
Must agree
Pretty hard to interrupt when Tom talks without taking a breath. I counted: only seven breaths taken the entire interview! Tom's a great actor, but I assume it's perhaps the innate narcissism within him that convinces him he's the most important person in the room.
@@GD-he2xj Wow. Not a Hanks fan I see. 🙄 Wasted your time to be unkind. Good on you
There is something emotionally cathartic for me, listening to Tom tell these stories.
Rita is fantastic. She put her career on hold to raise their kids while Tom acted. She has a great sense of humour which is definately a plus in an actors marriage. No ego also helps.
Pedo Tom! EVIL!
Love this interview. My brother, at 64, just got a job as a intern plumber. He has never been happier. He will be a certified plumber in 3 years. After making well over 6 figures every year working in the salt (diamond) mines in northern Canada, he just got divorced, he didn't want to retire. So I call my best friend from high school, who has a plumbing company, and he says if your brother wants a job I am in. Turns out my old brother is the best employee he has ever had. Age is relative. As is acting.
Awesome story...thanks for sharing! I've worked in the Atlantic City casino industry for over forty years and I've never understood how older people can sit in front of a slot machine for hours on end every week and just mindlessly tapping the screen. My first thought is they need to find a hobby or simply start learning something new to keep their mind engaged. Your older brother has taken the correct path.
When I first arrived in Hollywood, I was blessed to work as assistant to Larry Brezner. Larry was a partner in the management company of Rollins, Joffe and Morra.
At that time, RJMB was the most respected and
revered management company for comedians.Their list of talent included Woody Allen, Robert Klein, Dick Cavett, David Letterman , Michael Richards and a young comedian named Robin Williams. Larry Brezner discovered Robin Williams. They were a wonderful group of people . The 3 years I worked there were incredible . ( Fear not, I’m getting to the Tom Hanks story…) Eventually, I was promoted to associate producer and spent 20 yrs working on network sitcoms , hour long series and MOWs.
Tom Hanks was doing Bosom Buddies at Paramount where we had offices for a while. Larry was dying to speak with Tom so a meeting was set and he came over during a break in shooting. Tom Hanks was just getting a name for himself and, truthfully, some of the office staff didn’t know who he was.
What Larry really wanted was to manage Tom . When the meeting ended, Tom ( A very gracious and respectful young man ) left and, Larry was crestfallen. Hanks had a manager and felt he should be loyal to him, even though RJMB could have taken this barely known actor on a not so hot at the time, sitcom and probably make him a big name. Larry still respected his loyalty even if he lost a client . What I will never forget is what he said after Tom left. “ There goes a guy who is going to be one of the biggest stars this business has ever known. He can do anything. That is an actor who can and will play anything. Comedy, Drama. You name it. He’ll probably be a producer , director as well. He can do it all !!
I guess this is more of a tribute to Larry than Tom ( Larry died a few years ago ) . Larry hated losing Tom Hanks as a client but, he sure did recognize talent … and ethics and loyalty, in a town that is often short on both.
Here’s to Tom Hanks and his wealth of talent and his sense of loyalty and ethics that , from what I hear are still very much in tact. And, to Larry Brezner who predicted the future career of Tom Hanks in 1980. God bless them both.
But what’s with Weinstein association. This guy would have pushed Tom into any kind of luid act for the ability to get a movie done. I see his woke buddies and all I see is another woke man without ethics who’s acting all the time. Who is he? Just another phoney actor in Hollywood. No place for Hanks. He’s an embarrassment!
Did you also make it to Epstein's Island like him ?
How great to hear from Tom Hanks, our generation's Henry Fondo/Jimmy Stewart! To think, I used to watch him on Bosom Buddies! 😊 😅
Tom Hanks has got to be one of best actors of our time. I have seen all of his movies and multiple times.

Lucky! The closest I've been to Tom Hanks was being in Florence on the bridge where they had just finished filming for the day and the big names had left. I was so disappointed. I would have loved to have seen him!
You should be thankful that he is not a victim of a p do
I have loved Tom since BIG. I adored watching him bc he becomes the charater but his true personality still shines through.
In Forrest Gump he was Forrest right through the movie - no Tom Hanks.

Such a fun interview! Tom is a wonderful story teller...not a talent everyone has...not even other actors. I go all the way back to watching him on Bosom Buddies. He never disappoints :-)

This was so much fun to listen to. What I love about Tom Hanks is that I sense there is always a core of good will within how he portrays a character -- I want to love his characters and would if I met them in person.
Great work, Tom! And thanks, Guy!

I was 8 or 9 when Bosom Buddies aired as a rerun on NBC I think. I had no idea what a rerun was. I remember watching every week with my dad and laughing so much. Tom Hanks was my first celebrity crush! When the final season ended I asked my dad when it was coming on again and he told me we had been watching reruns and that the show had been canceled. I had no idea that was even a thing and I was crushed! 🤣 I remember when I heard Splash was coming out I advised my dad that there was no debate of taking me to the theater to see it! 40 years later I'm still crushing on Mr. Hanks and waiting for any movie with him in it. I also was a latch key kid at 5. No one even understands the depth of that title. Tom Hanks you are a national treasure! ❤✌
Thank you so much for your love❤️and support for me and my career🤓I appreciate your support and warm comments✊ god bless you and stay safe❤️
I am a little older than you are, I think I saw it new but I always thought Henry was cute one! lol. I can really relate to the lonely kid part, my family was composed of MASH, Taxi, & Barney Miller! & yes I had a crush on Jim Ignatalski, Detective Detrick, and Hawk Eye Pierce!
Tom Hanks' graduation speeches are brilliant, heart felt and wise.

The most important thing in acting is honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

Great interview. Thanks so much, Guy. You’re especially good at getting out of the way and letting Tom just talk. Obviously, you could’ve talked the whole two hours about Tom Hanks-and fascinatingly so-you clearly love the guy and did all the research. So it must have been hard to stay as silent as you did. You’re like DiMaggio and Tom. You made it look easy. Now I can imagine how much it isn’t. Thank you.
Exactly. So many interviewers can't wait to cut the interviewee off & I feel frustrated I didn't get to hear the end of the thought or story. Bill Maher on his podcast is especially bad at stepping on others thoughts.
@@EricAlexander-ry7ks it takes an interviewer who has a healthy ego to realize that the interviewee is the star of the program, and that the interviewer is there to make that star shine. Guy excels at this.
About halfway through I began to worry if Tom Hanks would fret at you not having your questions off pat and ready to launch. And I began to notice how well that fitted. He seemed to appreciate you were both working together. It gave an extra flavour to the whole thing.
Excellent! Tom Hanks has become such an integral part of our lives. He nailed Tom Parker - I absolutely came away understanding that he was a promoter, not a manager…. and definitely a Carny!

The story about Robert Redford about not knowing anything about his actual life. I worked at a place the developed pictures and I was the person who cut the pictures into orders and there was a picture of Robert Redford sound asleep at his daughters graduation.

This was my first podcast episode with Guy Raz. It will not be my last. Subscribed. This interview 'conversation' was very interesting and well done; Great questions that lead to a great conversation and unexpected insights. Plus, Tom Hanks is way better than a sharp stick in the eye, any day. Hey, TOMMY!
That Joe De Maggio reference was endearing. Priceless actually and reminds of the song ` you know it dont come easy ' . Not the title but definitely poignant lyric of the Beatles tune 🙂
Thank you both for this delightful conversation!
This is a great interview! It is great to see and hear Tom’s personality. I really admire him.
Thanks for the interview Mr. Hanks. I am very interested in how you got started.
My wife and I have enjoyed your movies. If Tom Hanks is in a movie, we'll watch it. He's got good taste in roles.
Tom is a treasure. He is our guy. Tom in ROAD TO PERDITION is so haunting. Everything he does is authentic and real. Real. Wonderful interview! As an Air Force kid we moved ev 3-4 yrs. and then the moving continued for two more decades into adulthood, moving and starting over like Tom, makes you adaptable and sociable. Great to hear about his growing up years; here is a fellow who had every reason to become depressed from moving so much, yet he & his siblings made the best of it and entertained one another. I love this interview where he recounts in his own words his life, his career, various movies ... very entertaining.
I was 3 yo at the end of WWII and we all moved all the time. I have since learned that the reason was the several million men that returned, with no -real plans for the most part. During those years we lived in motels, rooming houses/ boarding houses and later apartments and finally our own home. It was just life!
Utterly, brilliant! Particularly loved his quote: “Acting is the battle of self-consciousness! “ That’s why he’s so beloved! Truth. 👏❤️

He’s an ACTOR. smh
This was a great interview! Tom Hanks isn’t just a “pretty face” and with 40 years under his belt he’s fully cognizant of his craft and his role in it! My favorite scene of his is in Forest Gump when he learns about having a son. I would love to know how he decided to play that scene! Watching his eyes in that scene is truly amazing as Forest realizes the truth, it’s truly remarkable the emotions he portrayed with his just his eyes. Great interview, he's one of my all time favorite actors. And seems to be a down to earth guy.
Tom Hanks is a great character actor and one of my favorite people who do that sort of thing. My youngest son is disabled and sometimes even after 27 years, it's difficult to know what he's saying. Tom Hanks played Forrest Gump and was incredible at becoming that person. I suspect Tom Hanks is a social chameleon and talented and kind all in one package.
I love how he imitates Ron Howard so naturally almost bringing Ron into the interview in a funny way but with great love and respect.🙏💕🙏💕🙏💕
Carny logic maintains that once one finds a winning formula, one sticks with it until it no longer is profitable. That's why Colonel had Elvis doing the same, "safe" movies, touring nonstop with the same show content, never taking a big risk like touring outside The United States and refusing to be seen "free" on television. Elvis ended up on a creative treadmill that, while it made him rich, stifled his artistic spirit . Elvis died of drugs, overeating and boredom.
Thank you for this description of Carny logic. It makes sense and illustrates (for those of us who haven’t yet seen the movie) even more the poignancy of Elvis’s situation.
@@laurakazimir1712 The movie is very well made and acted but is mostly fiction.
He did Elvis Presley 😭 and your advice is accurate because in God's country we love American artists 🎨🎭 will never go out of style and music 🎶🥇🏆🌹🌻🎈.🎉
They did the same safe formula because if the colonel left the USA, he could never get back in. He stifled Elvis.
Hide the children.
David S. Pumpkins brings me joy. Halfway through this interview and hoping it comes up.
I attended 14 elementary schools and found some to be great, others awful. But, as an adult I adjust to change expertly!
Amazing what skills we gather from our life experiences.
This talk was a masterpiece
Ol' Sparky was the electric chair in Florida (Raiford). Gruesome Gertie was the electric chair at Louisiana State Penitentiary. I should know. A very good friend of mine died on Gertie. I can't watch The Green Mile or Dead Man Walking because they both take place at LSP death row. It's too close to home. I wanted to be an actress, but Gene Roddenberry turned me into a writer. So I wrote a book about my friend. I still believe he was innocent. I even think I know who the real killer is.
But Tom---I've seen as many of your films as possible, and some I've liked more than others. But for the most part I've liked them all. You do make it look effortless, but I do recognize the nuances you put into your roles. Personally I think Brando was a schmuck. I think you're so successful because you truly love the craft such as I haven't seen since the days of Bogart, Fonda, Mitchum, John Wayne and those guys of that generation. Thanks for all the entertainment.
Amazing interview - thoroughly enjoyed it. Like many others I've seen practically every one of Tom's movies over the years...and my favorite one was Nothing In Common (Jackie Gleasons's last movie). Tom's character in that was energy personified - great comedic writing and timing. It was hilarious for the first half...then shifted gears and got very serious in the second half. It really showcased Tom's versatility. There were so many great one-liners that have stuck in my head after watching it half a dozen times that I often use them even today. Tom Hanks is just one of those rare actors that when you see his name attached to a film you're compelled to check it out no matter what. But what really fascinated me about this interview was when he talked about his upbringing and constantly moving. Likewise, I went to 13 different schools over the years...my parents constantly moved all over the country. So I really identified with him when he described what the experience was like constantly being the 'new kid' and how the slate was cleared each time he moved and started fresh.
Ernest Borgnine also said acting was the easiest thing in the world and obviously for him it was he said so. He said we all act every day thats how he saw it. Great actor.
Probably the best interview I’ve ever watched! It was honest, not predictable, not trite, and worth what little time that I have left.
Someone remarked in the comments that there is "always a core of good will" in how Tom Hanks portrays characters. Tom's good will extends into his personal life.
After I appeared in an episode of "From the Earth to the Moon," I wrote to Tom about my experience and how it related to my late father who was an early supporter of the Apollo Program. I didn't expect a response, but Tom sent a delightful hand-written and signed reply to my letter. That simple act exemplifies Tom Hanks' good will and sincerity.
I don't know if Mr. Hanks will ever see this comment, but I appreciate more than anything his remarks on equipoise. I've thought for years that stage acting is most comparable to sports. That is to say that one has to be there in that moment or it is lost forever - to the player as much as to the viewer. And "being there" is all the rest of what he's said about knowing the text, bringing something new and particular to each moment, getting over self-consciousness, and loving the work. Thank you both for a wonderful insightful interview.
A fantastic Interview, had me hooked from start to finish. How down to earth and open Tom is, such a natural honest genuine man. I've always admired Toms acting ability but his integrity and sincereity speaks volumnes. This interview flowed beautifully. Thank you so much Guy. P.S Tom looks great in a hat, especially in The Green Mile.

That's as close as I'll ever come to a conversation with Tom Hanks so thank you very much. 👍
What a great interview! I love Tom Hanks!
My brother checked out my DVDs and said "Is this a Tom Hank's Museum". I didn't even realize I had almost every movie he's ever made.
Best interview ever!
Tom Hank's Forrest Gump made me a huge fan of the movies he acted, created and produced. ❤
