the Romanian way [which is how the Russians do it] is the exact opposite: you start from the top wrapping the thumb very loosely - then bend your finger and finish the job by squeezing and twisting your other hand around the thumb.. this way you can even use a hook grip on heavy deadlifts ..it's super fast and it never hurts because there is no tension in the tape

It helps with gripping the bar on heavy load lifting days. Also helps protect the thumbs. If you've ever done lots of snatching and cleans, the thumbs will get pretty beat up if they are not taped. Only if you use the hook grip, though. Taping is not necessary if you don't hook grip.

I use hook grip on squats, some people would say I'm a stickler for the tickler, but the proof is in the pudding.

Rich; will you always tape up if you are going to use a hook grip? Also, would you use chalk and tape together, or only one or the other?

I have noticed when Rich clean and jerks he starts with a hook grip but during the clean he switches his thumb to the outside of the bar so that its in line with his fingers. Can u make a video on how he makes that transition and how often he uses it.

You have to love the fact that a video on taping your thumbs has 47K views as of October 2015. That's the power of CrossFit.
