I am so sorry all those 'haters' got into your head, but remember how Dylan was 'hated' upon when he first went electric. You need to do what you want with your music and frankly to hell with them. Yes I know it is easy for me to say, especially as it was not happening to me, but look at your 162,000 subscribers, you must be doing something right!

This is an important vid for me and I imagine many others on this side of the screen. It highlights (more than many vids) the humanity of the creator that we see - a person with strengths weaknesses, gifts and limitations, confidence and doubt, and feelings. Thank you for your music, your openness, your creativity, and for respecting us enough to share some of who you are. And please know that there are people all around the globe who care, and wish you well.

Thanks for posting this. It always amazes me that anyone, who is watching a free UA-cam video, that no one is compelling them to watch, that does not require them to comment on, still takes the time to comment negatively! It blows my mind!
I can't remember how I came across you channel, but I know had no interest at all in ambient guitar at the time. However, you charm, graciousness, teaching ability, enthusiasm, and wonderful musicality has kept me coming back. Lovely sentiment. Thanks for sharing your story, it is encouraging. Forgive my indulgence in sharing my own similar story here.
Currently experiencing something similar. After some negative responses and politely dismissive comments regarding a project that I've put years into, I find that my passion has finally been worn down. I've spent decades working on my craft and feel my work is good, but yet, nobody seems to want to produce it. People will be polite, but when it comes down to brass tacks. I feel like I'm standing in an empty room. I'm not talking about music here, but my image making and illustration work. I have to say that the thing that has got me is that after years of self belief, weathering the storms, putting it out there... I'm just tired, and worn out, and feel like nobody wants the work that I'm making. It's not what's popular. It's a big bummer, and really has had me down for about 3 months now.
Your video speaks to this depression, and is encouraging. Hoping to rekindle the inner fire. Thanks.

I did exactly the same thing, the first time I posted my cover of Pink Floyd's "Learning To Fly" it had a photo of a Bald Eagle which I thought was beautiful - and a few people politicized it and were harshly critical that I tried to AMERICANIZE their ENGLISH band, I took it down... and then I did exactly what you did - put it back up the next day and its still there unchanged. My rationale was, hey - we are ALL "learning to fly"! :)

You're such a beautiful soul... and I know first-hand how difficult ambient music can be to create... a person HAS to be in a calm, stress-free mind-place in order to immerse and flow with the solemn majesty... despite how slow and uncomplicated this music can seem to the uninitiated or unreceptive ear. Keep the faith...

My band has a few songs online that I would love to take down. I mixed them when I didn't really know what I was doing, and they sound awful. I really want to remix them sometime. But I have decided if I ever do that, the originals will stay up. I will rename them demo or something, but those bad mixes are still my work. They serve a similar purpose to an artist's early scribbles, a necessary step on the path to getting better. I can stand behind them while also recognising their shortcomings.

Bill, as if I couldn't admire more, I do for you sharing your vulnerability here. For starters, it takes courage to share your teaching and music art as you do. Further, it is an evolved and emotionally mature person who can do what you do in sharing what happened for you in this video. What kind of world would we live in if more people, especially men, were able to share like this? I suspect there are always going to be those who don't or can't appreciate what we have to share. For me, being a viewer for the past 3-4 years now, I have come to consider you a friend I haven't met in person. You don't always have to be a "musician", you can be a producer of "wiggly air." Bill,
The first time I ever “tried” to listen to Terry Kath’s FREE FORM GUITAR I made it to about 3 seconds before I shut it off. Horrible! Then I got mad… Why would they put that on a record? What is the point of that? Etc… Etc… I play guitar but it still didn’t make any sense. Some time later it came on when I was in the garage under a Jeep and I couldn’t get up to change it. I heard the whole thing involuntarily. Totally different reaction the second time round as it unfolded. THEN I got it. I understood as a guitar player AND as a listener. Sometimes in your head (Bill’s head) you come across a door and you say, “What’s in that room?” Why wouldn’t you express it? Why wouldn’t you see what it’s like? Anybody that’s ever picked up and instrument and played has done the same thing. The ones that set themselves apart are the ones that show everyone else what is in the infinite places in their head; for the revelation and maybe to encourage it in other musicians. So I try to listen to music with a proper frame of mind; respectfully. Wow, that was in Bill’s head and he had the courage to show it! A listener needs that same sense of exploration or else why bother? So if somebody hates, well, I feel sorry for them. They live in their ONE ROOM miserable 24/7 and can’t help but spread hate.
Glad you didn’t delete it permanently. It was an interesting room! BTW Playing ambient guitar while you narrate about ambient guitar that triggered people was a nice touch too. 😉

  • @agerven

Don't feel ashamed Bill, it is mistakes that people learn from and you're only human.
While recording my first CD, and after publishing some stuff on SoundCloud, i learned that i tend to do quite the opposite: publish too early! My tracks are, at a certain point, just sketches that still need a lot of work and polishing.
While some of my friends, usually relatives and non-musicians, tend to say it is awesome and wonderful, at first hearing, i learned that what they actually mean to say is this:
Respect for what you're doing here, something we could never do. Well done!
And fortunately i had some other friends that are musicians and recording artists who say what i not always like to hear, but which is actually good to hear: This track stinks, that track is going nowhere, another track needs some reworking etc.
So in the end i think we end up similar: growing confidence in a certain area and appreciating our lessons learned. And continuing to work on our music with joy and happiness.

GRACIAS!!!

I appreciate your humility, Bill. Don't let the negative comments get to you. There is nothing wrong with you - their comments say more about their writer than their reader. Take care!

    Thanks for this video Bill.
I've received negative comments on my humble videos. Inspiring to hear your message in this one, makes me want to think more about creating with the intention of sharing. Maybe even getting a nice camera...not just looping in private for my own pleasure.

You’re a lovely man Bill. An inspiration, and instrumental (pardon the pun!) in my guitar life. I’ve learned so much from you and continue to look forward to your videos and your music. Play on…
Ps - noticed your using a Lehle Mono S in this vid. I’ve just had one delivered today 😮

We will stay with your channel. You make great contents.

You are an excellent musician and creator, don't let negative posts on the net spoil your mood. I think we are close in age, that means we can be over it. You are very inspiring and kind, and some people (unfortunately, musicians too) are not like that. Stay healthy and keep creating. Warm regards, Pavel CZ.👍👍👍

Sometimes the comments that sting the most are often the ones that correlate to our own self-doubts or insecurities. Often times the negative voices in the world and the ones in our head are both wrong. Keep at it!

You didn't make a mistake. Music is subjective and some things aren't for everyone and your interpretations are valid as long as you and you alone are happy with the results. Always play and create for yourself first and foremost! Never play for the crowd as there will always be haters or those who can't appreciate/understand what you are doing.

Agree. Art came from you not from what other people think about you.

Thats the only thing that puts me off Bills music is when he mentions religion which i hate, and just for the record the 'LORD' died some 2000 years ago if he ever existed at all.

The 'haters' will always be there and as you say Bill, they usually are sad little creatures with sad little lives mostly. Constructive criticism however can be good but we all get the 'haters' from time to time. I think you are right, let them vent but trust your own art.
